Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari and Alabama football coach Nick Saban were compared plenty before Thursday, when UK announced a seven-year contract for Calipari worth $52 million.
Both rescued historically strong programs from lean years on the field. Both are known for doing that through strong recruiting.
But Calipari and Saban have likewise coached at the professional level. Their massive college contracts should stave off thelure of the pros.
“In nearly every radio interview I've ever done about John Calipari, for as long as I can remember, somebody has asked, either at the beginning or the end, whether I think Kentucky's coach will eventually return to the NBA,”
Parrish said he’s ready to change his opinion. Calipari’s deal makes him the second-highest paid college coach behind Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. It’s also more than any NBA coach reportedly makes.
Now he has a deal similar to Saban’s, which guarantees the Crimson Tide coach $6.5 million a year through 2022. Caliapri’s new contract runs through 2021, paying him increasing values starting at more than $7 million a year.
It has been suggested by most that when Calipari is finished at UK, he’d have his own statue in Lexington.
But as the current coach? A statue? Well, Saban has one.
