WEDNESDAY FIRST 5 INNINGS PLAY (YTD 1-0)

Houston/Toronto over 5 -110:
So much for the promising start Houston had after taking the first 2 games of their home opening series against the Yankees. Since then the Astros have dropped 5 of their last 6. Meanwhile for Toronto things have pretty much evened itself out over the first 8 games. The Blue Jays look to take game 2 of this series this evening after winning last night's matchup 5-2 thanks to a strong outing from Mark Buehrle and long balls by Jose Bautista and Melky Cabrera.

Brandon Morrow takes the hill for Toronto looking to rebound from a shaky opening start last week. Morrow gave up 4 ER on 7 hits over 5 innings despite walking just one batter and striking out 4. The right-hander had a forgettable 2013 campaign starting just 10 games and finishing with a 2-3 record and an ERA of 5.68. Morrow suffered from an entrapped radial nerve in his right forearm causing him to miss most of last season. Tonight he faces a Houston lineup that is hitting just .201 overall through it's first 8 games. Jose Altuve (.310 0 5 ) and Dexter Fowler (.462 1 2) have provided the majority of the offense so far this season. Matt Dominguez (.125) is just 3 of his first 24, with 2 of his hits HR. The Astros could use some more pop from Jesus Guzman (.261 2 3) and Jonathan Villar (.250 1 2) who so far has shown some good range at SS. Scoring a shade under 3 runs per game has resulted from some key rallies ending with the heavy hitters going down on strikes as a result of their 70 K's collectively going into tonight.

Houston counters Morrow with Lucas Harrell who wound up getting crushed by the Angels in an 11-1 loss last week. Harrell yielded 5 ER on 7 hits in 3 IP as he also looks to rebound from a difficult 2013 where he was just 6-17 with a 5.86 ERA. He didn't show much improvement this spring and could be on a short leash with Bo Porter when it comes to staying in the starting rotation. The good news is that the Blue Jays haven't exactly looked consistent offensively against opposing pitching, however Cabrera (.314 4 5) and Bautista (.250 4 5) are off to productive starts despite most of their long balls coming via the solo variety. Maicer Izturis (.421) is 8 for his first 19 and has given this team a lift setting the table for the heart of the lineup. However, Edwin Encarnarcion (.207) and Brett Lawrie (.103) are off to considerably slow starts which may put added pressure on the rest of the lineup who is without Jose Reyes due to a hamstring injury.

At hitter friendly Rogers Centre this evening we expect to see more offense from both ball clubs. Harrell's success in selecting his variety of pitches will be key as well as his control. Morrow will look to keep his velocity under control as well and keep the ball down and away against the middle of the lineup. If Morrow can locate his fast ball and navigate himself out of trouble, then he should solidify his spot in the rotation. Harrell on the other hand may need to battle while being economical to avoid a trip to the bullpen. Runs could wind up plentiful this evening if both starting hurlers fail to find a rhythm early. Best of luck however you play!

We were lucky to push on this one. I also have over 9 as well I8Ahorse. Considering after the 2 Toronto got in the bottom of the first I thought we would hit this with ease. However we were benefitted by a throwing error that led to 2 of the 3 runs scored in the 5th. Better to be safe than sorry as the final 2 batters were retired in the bottom of the 5th. Back up later in the week.
