Spooky Express Four of the Best Days of the Year March Madness Thoughts

Spooky Express Four of the Best Days of the Year March Madness Thoughts

-- Check for our plays all weekend long. Come back here to the Spooky Express often to see what we have going.

-- 40 years ago this month, Maryland Terrapins were #3 in the country; they lost the ACC championship game in OT to NC State and didn’t even make the NCAA tournament, because back then, only the conference champ made the NCAAs. Terps jogged thru the NIT, winning the title game there by 30+ points and NC State won the national title, but lot has changed since then, for sure.

-- Whatever happened to Billy Packer? Guy was all over TV for 35 years, then CBS dumps him and he never resurfaces? I’m thinking this is our loss- there are enough sorry TV guys on the airwaves, Packer deserves a voice on one of these networks, no?

-- I’m still waiting for one valid, semi-sensible reason why Louisville is a #4 seed. Anybody got anything? The only thing that stops this team is their depth and bench.

-- First Four has turned out to be better than I thought it would; it has kind of a JV/Varsity feel to it, with the 16-seeds playing first, then the better teams playing the nightcap. Think it would be even better if only the top eight at-large teams played, but that’s nitpicking. Actually, the tournament would be better off at 64 teams, with none of the extra stuff, but since they have it, at least they have a format which works pretty well.

-- CBS has done a good job putting all the games on regular TV; afternoon card is so spread out you really don’t have to go out to catch just about all the good action. For the night cards, a sports bar is necessary. Plus, CBS Sports Network runs the games back all night, the way ESPN used to in the old days, and that’s a great thing.

-- Baseball season starts at 4am Eastern time Friday night/Saturday morning from Australia, when Dodgers-Arizona play. Second game of the series is 10pm Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon in Australia. Lot of stuff going on; things move fast, you have to keep up.

-- How are these tournament games going to be officiated? New rules? Old rules? Australian Rules? Holy Cross-Brown CIT game Monday night had total of 10 foul shots, but that was with refs who weren’t trying to impress and move on in the NCAA tournament. Former Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said on ESPNU Sunday night he thought the new rules this season hurt Duke. Interesting point. If the powers-that-be are hung up on enforcing new rules, there could be games with lot of foul shots being taken.

-- When, if ever, will a 1-seed lose to a 16-seed? Not this year; too many upsets in the smaller conference tourneys weakened the bottom of this field.

-- VCU’s run to the Final Four legitimized the First Four concept; which of the upper-level First Four teams can make a run this year?

-- Providence beat Creighton Saturday night by pushing the Bluejays around inside; Friars have so little depth, can they do the same thing with North Carolina, which has bigger, tougher (if less skilled) guys than Crieghton?

-- Friars and St Joe’s are two teams with almost zero depth, but with TV timeouts longer during the NCAA tournament, conditioning should be less of a problem than if refs blow a tight whistle, like they did in the Providence-Seton Hall game Friday. Hawks also play six guys but they’re six pretty good guys.

-- Nebraska coach Tim Miles was talking on TV the other night about how he had Texas A&M WR Mike Evans in Lincoln on a basketball recruiting visit and that he was a very good hooper. Am thinking Evans made the right decision choosing football.

Thanks for all the "stuff" all the time and for all the time you must put in, Marc. Damn, you must be a mult-multi tasker and really coordinate your time, sheets, notes, etc ! I'm envious. GL with all your pix

Never, ever criticize someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes........for at that point they will be a mile away. And you'll have their shoes !

Thanks Hitman! Well running my own business for years it kind of taught me how to multi task otherwise I would be typing with 1 finger on each hand. Really appreciate, good luck and enjoy the tourney.

Best of luck on your plays Marc!

I always believed and kept in the back of my head that the "This game is over' remark did Billy Packer in in relation to the integrity of his career. In a semi-final game at the 2008 Final Four between Kansas and North Carolina, the Jayhawks jumped out to a 38–12 lead, at which time Billy Packer declared, "This game is over." However, the Tar Heels clawed their way back in the second half, cutting the deficit to 4 points midway through the second half, though Kansas finished strong to win 84–66. Pundits have noted that this may have been an ominous allusion to Packer's future career as a broadcaster, which was "over" when CBS announced over the summer of 2008 that Clark Kellogg would be taking over the lead color commentary duties.

That being said, Kellogg has a tendency to whine and cry like a baby and focus on what the college kids on the hardwood don't do rather than the fundamentals of the game. If he is doing the color commentary during a game or at halftime I mute the tv when he speaks hoping Gary Bender saves the day.

Louisville unfortunately at the end of the day took a step down in conference power rating since the dismantling of the Big East. Of course the conference looked strong when you had schools like Memphis, Connecticut SMU and the now eliminated Cincinnati who lost this afternoon in a JTG upset 12-5 special to Harvard. I thought they should have received no worse than a 2, however conference cupcakes like USF, Temple, Houston and Rutgers combined with a somewhat weak non-conference schedule may have cost them some. Pitino however will once again be out there to prove the naysayers wrong and defend the Cardinals '13 title.

What's frustrating and at the same time satisfying about the first 4 is that it gives teams like Albany and Texas Southern an extra game to win in order to feel like they've accomplished something playing in. Now mid-major conferences more often than not occupy the 14-16 range, but at least they don't have to play until Thursday. Is that however truly a reward? Look at Iowa and Tennessee who were on the bubble for the last month or so. Iowa goes in losing 6 of their last 7 and get knocked down to a double digit seed and another play-in game. Tennessee who plays in the SEC gave Florida all they could handle, but at the same time where's the respect and gratitude? The committee needs to judge the seeding a little more clearly between those smaller schools who end up as 15 and 16 seeds safe during the first week, or those bubble teams earning play-in games as higher seeds.

Keep an eye on Stephen F. Austin Friday as they could give #5 VCU all they could handle in another one of my upset specials. The Commodores will be without Melvin Johnson due to a sprained knee. The Lumberjacks' red-hot quintet is led by a dangerous guard trio of Desmond Haymon (14.2 points per game), Thomas Walkup (12.9 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game) and pg Trey Pinkney. They could force VCU to play at an up tempo pace toe to toe in transition as well as the halfcourt if they can take care of the ball. Shaka Smart may have to release the hounds when it comes to Briante Weber who is a 2 time A-10 Defensive Player of the Year to swtich on man to man and matchup zone assignments.

Creighton possesses a legitimate threat in offensive sensation Doug McDermott who averages about 27 ppg and 7 rebounds shooting 87% from the charity stripe and 47% from beyond the arc. Reminds me a lot of Kyle Korver with additional size who also attended Creighton Providence did what they had to do by running right through foes to make it to the big dance, but that only defines how tough it is to win 4 games in 4 days. The Blue Jays could very well be a possible elite 8 selection to enhance your bracket as a sleeper.

"THE" SPOOKY EXPRESS MARCH MADNESS MADNESS CONTINUES

-- A nice winning day yesterday and really should have posted North Dakota State instead of San Diego State last night and we could of had a clean sweep. But still a great day nontheless. Lets see if it continues today. Come back later and check in all day to see any picks that we add to "THE" Spooky Express.

-- Gotta love Dayton for beating Ohio State and having some fun at Ohio State's expense. Kind of funny that everyone at Ohio State says they are from "THE" Ohio State University. Well this is "THE" Spooky Express and congratulations to "THE" University of Dayton

Dayton 60, Ohio State 59-- Buckeyes don't play in-state teams in their non-conference schedule, but they had to play Dayton here and Flyers got a game-winning basket with 0:06 left to win it. Dayton outscored Ohio State in transition, 20-12; that wasn't expected. Good win for Atlantic 13.

Read more below

-- Angels traded Mike Scioscia's son to the Cubs for Wayne Gretzky's son. Seriously, they did. Both players play in Class A minor leagues.

-- Bubba Watson shot an 83 and WD from Arnold Palmer's tournament in Orlando; he had an 11 on one hole, then blamed his allergies.

-- NFL signing: Devin Hester to Atlanta, to bolster their return game.

-- If Chip Kelly doesn't want DeSean Jackson around anymore, why would anyone else want him?

-- Wisconsin 75, American 35-- American was winning 17-10 at one point; really, they were. Badgers are 17-12 in NCAA tourney under Bo Ryan, but 13 of the 17 wins are against teams seeded 10th or worse.

-- Pittsburgh 77, Colorado 48- Buffaloes overachieved to get into the NCAAs after losing star guard Spencer Dinwiddie early in conference season, but they laid an egg here and got trounced. Panthers were 6.5-point favorites; that was the biggest spread in any 8-9 game since 1987.

-- Harvard 61, Cincinnati 57-- When you get a technical foul for not having a player in the scorebook, thats on your coaching staff, even more so since that happened in the Mountain West tourney last week, so EVERYONE should be aware of it. Harvard was the tougher team in this game; Bearcats missed a ton of short shots (17-45, 37.8%) inside the arc. Thats on the players.

-- Syracuse 77, Western Michigan 53-- When Orange won national title in 2003, they played two games in Albany, where the arena setting gave them more of a home court edge than they're used to in their dome at home. Same thing here; arena in Buffalo gives them a formidable home court edge.

-- Florida 67, Albany 55-- Game was 39-all with 14:10 left, but the best team in America isn't losing to the 4-seed from America East. Will Brown is 4-1 vs spread in NCAA tournament games, and he's played some of the big boys-- UConn, Duke, Virginia, Florida.

-- Oregon 87, BYU 68-- Selection Committee has to be happy with the way Thursday went, but BYU didn't belong in the field with Collinsworth hurt. Ducks have now won nine of their last ten games. They'll have a tough time beating the Badgers in Milwaukee Saturday.

-- Michigan State 93, Delaware 78-- Adreian Payne scored 41, but Izzo has to be concerned with Delaware going 30-39 on foul line. Only two Spartans played more than 25:00; they get Harvard Saturday. State was 10-19 from arc in this game; that doesn't happen every day.

-- UConn 89, St Joe's 81 OT-- Hard to win any game when your bench plays total of 9:00, and in OT to boot. UConn hit 11-24 from arc and still needed an extra 5:00 to win, inferring that the better team may have lost. First win in NCAAs for Kevin Ollie, who gets old friend Villanova Saturday.

-- Michigan 57, Wofford 40-- Southern Conference teams generally cannot compete athletically with big-time schools. That was the case here. After Day 1 of the tournament. only 18,741 out of 11M+ -plus brackets got all 16 games right; Warren Buffett probably isn't too worried.

-- Saint Louis 83, NC State 80 OT-- With 8:13 to go, Wolfpack was up by 16; they were still up six in last minute. State was 20-37 from foul line, and that will haunt them until practice starts in October.

-- North Dakota State 80, Oklahoma 75 OT-- Lawrence Alexander tied game with a trey at 0:12 mark, then more experienced Bison won in OT, giving the Summit League a rare postseason win. Had New Mexico State won late last night, we would have had the strangest second round game ever, but Bison are facing San Diego State in their next game.

-- Villanova 73, Milwaukee 53-- Only thing that kept this game from extreme ugliness was Wildcats starting 1-19 from the arc. Wildcats are a funny team; they've won a lot of games, but are seldom real impressive. Only two of their guys played more than 27:00, which will help Saturday.

-- Texas 87, Arizona State 85-- Total heartbreak for ASU, as last five Texas points came off of offensive rebounds after horrible airballs. Jahii Carson had 19 points, nine assists in his last college game. Seriously, if Texas hits the rim with either of its last two jumpshots, they probably would've lost.

-- Louisville 71, Manhattan 64-- Hancock bailed defending champs out of a fierce struggle with couple of 3-pointers late. Mirror image teams fought like hell for two hours; bad news for Manhattan is that coach Masiello won't be coaching the Jaspers very much longer; he is destined for bigger things.

-- San Diego State 73, New Mexico State 69 OT-- Aztecs held on to win in OT in a far less-publicized teacher/pupil matchup. San Diego State led by 12 at the half, but Aggies fought back as Aztecs damn near gagged game away at end of regulation. San Diego State lost to Florida Gulf Coast LY, now they're playing North Dakota State Saturday. Hello, Cinderella......

-- The L.A. Dodgers and Arizona begin the Major League season tomorrow in Sydney, Australia.
