Spooky's Best Bench Celebrations anywhere Championship Week Random Thoughts Express

Spooky's Best Bench Celebrations anywhere Tuesday Championship Week Random Thoughts Express

-- The Colby College basketball team is probably not a thing that the residents of Waterville, Maine, need to go out of their way to see in action. It's Division III basketball, after all. The team's bench, on the other hand, is worth the price of admission. Colby's bench mob has spent the season celebrating baskets with a series of choreographed routines, and they are all splendid. The fact that they do this in a nearly empty gym just makes the performances all the better. These guys are committed to their craft. See the video below.

-- I'm sure most sports fans hadn't heard of Patrick Reed before last weekend. Maybe they still haven't. But the kid has set the golf world abuzz by winning three tournaments by the age of 23. Only the "one-name" golfers have done that: Tiger, Phil, Rory and Sergio. Reed was asked about his game and he said he considered himself one of the top 5 golfers in the world. At first blush you have to do a double-take. Huh? Patrick Reed? A little self-indulgent, no? At second glance good for him. Golf is the ultimate individual competition. If he doesn't believe in himself, who will?

-- Last night's Dallas/Columbus hockey game was postponed midway through the first period when Dallas center Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench. Doctors successfully treated him for a heart incident.

-- NFL free agents can be signed today at 4pm Eastern.

-- Hey mushers! Dallas Seavey won his second Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

-- Louisville is in midst of 3-year stretch where they’ll play in three leagues (Big East/AAC/ACC). If they win AAC tourney in Memphis this week, they could win ACC tourney next year and win three different conference tournaments in three years. Doubt that has happened before.

-- UCLA is 2-3 in its last five games, lost by 18 at Washington State, suspended its two best players for a game and appear to be a ship taking on water. It bears repeating that in his career, Steve Alford hasn’t always been the best March coach, getting upset in a 3-14 game in NCAA tournament, and losing to Harvard last year.

-- Syracuse got Jerami Grant back Sunday and won by 16 at Florida State, so his presence could’ve healed whatever it was (lack of scoring) that ailed them. We’ll learn more this weekend.

-- Virginia had eight days off after its Senior Night win over Syracuse, an emotional game, then they laid an egg at Maryland. Cavaliers need to win a game in ACC tourney—it’s a red flag to go into the tournament off two straight losses.

-- Cal-Irvine—Anteaters have never been to NCAAs, but are #1 seed in Big West; this is their time. That brings some pressure with it. UCSB, Long Beach, Hawai’I will be their main challengers in Anaheim.

-- San Diego State-New Mexico are both in NCAAs, so if someone other than those two wins the Mountain West, they’re bursting someone’s bubble. Aztecs rallied back from 16 down to beat New Mexico Saturday; a third game for the MW title late Saturday would be fun.

-- Meanwhile a couple miles away at Orleans Arena, if Utah Valley-New Mexico State hook up in the WAC final, they might need extra security, seeing as the two teams nearly had a riot after their game couple weeks ago. If nothing else, have to see if the Utah Valley coach breaks out that neon green sports jacket again; I’m not sure if Craig Sager would even wear it, that’s how bright it is.

-- Buffalo—Bulls fired Reggie Witherspoon last year because he never made NCAAs; he won a decent amount of games, just not enough in March. Now Bobby Hurley has Buffalo as a high seed in the MAC; can he do what Witherspoon couldn’t and take the Bulls dancing in his first year as coach?

-- Atlantic 13 moved their tournament to Brooklyn; they have lot of good teams, but St Joe’s/Saint Louis have struggled of late, Richmond lost its PG, which leaves fast-paced VCU/UMass as top contenders. This league is going to have several teams in the Field of 68, should be a good tournament at the Barclays’ Center.

Spooky Express refuses to sign Brandon Weeden as a free agent weekend thoughts

The Cleveland Browns released Brandon Weeden yesterday, only two seasons after they shouldn't have drafted him. Someone put together the best of his stint with the Browns, and it's as poignant as a dead raccoon on the side of the highway.

-- Check out our new facebook page at The Shoppers Express and look forward to our new website at TheShoppersExpress.com coming soon.

-- Seton Hall 64, Villanova 63-- Likely to cause Wildcats to lose #1 seed next week. Either Pirates or Providence will be in Big East final.

-- Colorado 59, California 56-- Buffaloes won three of last four games, with all three wins by exact same 59-56 score- they play Arizona Friday, but hard to believe they're still on the bubble.

-- Louisville 92, Rutgers 31-- Rutgers is New Jersey's state university; they're going to be in the Big Dozen soon. If I'm running Rutgers' athletic department, this is a red flag, but this was Eddie Jordan's first year, so he has time to bring in a lot of new players between now and the fall.

-- Texas 66, West Virginia 49-- Andrew Luck's father is West Virginia's AD; he sold the basketball program down the river when he joined the Big X. Too much travel, too many ridiculously long road trips in winter. This game was 35-14 at the half; wouldn't have wanted to be in that locker room.

-- Eleven #1 seeds have already been KO'd from conference tournaments.

-- My good friend, Billy P from Maximum Fantasy Sports is in Vegas this week and in a 4.23 mile stretch of Las Vegas along Tropicana Ave., he can go to three different conference tournaments this weekend:

-- Mountain West at UNLV
-- Pac-12 at MGM Grand
-- WAC at Orleans Arena

-- Upsets of the Day: Northwestern (+12) 67-62 over Iowa. Wheels fell off down stretch for Hawkeyes, who are 4-7 in their last 11 games. Hope they get in NCAAs, just so I can pick against them. Seton Halll (+11) over Villanova was a close second.

-- Bad Beat of the Day: Texas A&M (+4) loses 91-83 to Missouri in double OT. Tigers were 40-53 from foul line, Aggies 20-28. A&M stole ball and tied game with 0:08 left; cost Aggie backers a cover or a push.

-- Denver Broncos smartly realize their window to win a title with Peyton Manning at QB is short; they signed Aqib Talib, DeMarcus Ware to bolster the defense. Shouldn't be too hard for them to replace WR Decker.

-- I'm thinking Cleveland will draft a quarterback in the first round, seeing as they cut all their QBs this week, except for Brian Hoyer. See the Weeden tribute above.

-- Hubie Brown is a American classic; while Mike Breen was explaining how Nets/Heat players had nicknames on their jerseys Wednesday night, he just ignored Breen and talked about Brooklyn's man-to-man defense. Yes!!!

-- William Clay Ford owned the Lions for 50 years; he was a veteran of WWII and the last surviving grandson of Henry Ford. RIP, sir. Mr Ford owned the Lions for 50 years, during which time Detroit won one playoff game. One. He was very loyal, which is how Matt Millen kept his job for seven horrendous years. Loyal to a fault, some would say, including me.
