Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs (-111, 5.5)

What a difference a year makes. Indeed the tables are turned as this Original Six rivalry resumes at Air Canada Centre. Toronto is back in first place and, as the wins continue to stockpile, the legions of Maple Leafs fans are truly beginning to think about more than just a playoff berth. Meanwhile, Boston, mired in last place, has hardly played like a Stanley Cup champion.

Great in goal

Goaltender James Reimer was regarded as the anchor to the Maple Leafs’ season of resurgence. And make no mistake, he still may be. But his injury has opened the door for Jonas Gustavsson and Ben Scrivens.

Gustavsson, who defeated New Jersey 5-3 Wednesday, is 4-3-0 with an .886 save percentage and getting better. And Scrivens, who started in place of Gustavsson Thursday, posted his first NHL victory with a 4-1 decision over Columbus.

A Boston boost?

There are two things, perhaps, moving in the direction of Boston. The Bruins are coming off three full days of rest and they snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators Tuesday.

In Beantown, they’ll take as much optimism as they can find. After all, the Bruins are 11 points behind the front-running Maple Leafs in the Northeast Division - a league Boston owned last year. And with just eight points overall, the champions are tied with the Islanders for the lowest total in the Eastern Conference.

Sweeping success for Seguin

Tyler Seguin clearly had his ups and downs en route to the Stanley Cup last year in Boston. He arrived at the rink every night during the playoffs, not knowing if he’d even play that night or not.

But, he's been a true force this season and has backed up his pre-draft hype. He enters this game with four goals, 11 points, 36 shots, and is a plus-8 on a team that has struggled on both ends of the ice.

He won’t, however, be the hottest forward in Toronto. That label belongs to Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul, who has three goals and five points in his last two games.

History

On Oct. 20, the Bruins drew first blood in this series, wiping out the Maple Leafs 6-2. Tim Thomas made 26 saves as Boston took advantage of Toronto playing on the back end of back-to-back nights. The Bruins have gone over in four of the last five games.

Edmonton Oilers At Phoenix Coyotes (-125, 5)

The CBC crew probably wishes this matchup was in February, when it could have escaped the dead of winter for a little comfort in the Arizona desert. But as it is, you still have a dandy of a nightcap that features two of the hotter teams in the Western Conference.

Nikolai the great

When the season started, Edmonton coach Tom Renney and general manager Kevin Lowe were intent on a nice, little goaltender platoon with Nikolai Khabibulin and Devan Dubnyk. That may still happen, but for the time being, the show belongs to the veteran they call "Khabby."

Versus the Kings in Los Angeles Thursday, Khabibulin recorded his second shutout of the season and 45th of his underrated career. He is now 6-0-2 with a league-leading 0.98 goals-against average.

Keep in mind, he lost 32 games as the Oilers stumbled last year. But things have changed dramatically in Edmonton. In its last home game, a 4-2 win over St. Louis Sunday, cheers of "Khab-by, Khab-by" rained down from the Rexall Place stands.

Plenty of hope (and seats) in Phoenix

Speaking of good goaltending, the Coyotes ran into some when they were blanked by Nashville's Pekka Rinne, 3-0, Thursday. But Phoenix still has a bit of mojo going for it heading into this tilt.

The Coyotes have still won three of the last four games and scored 12 goals in those victories. They are alive and well in the jam-packed Pacific Division race and don't seem to mind that they are dead-last in attendance, drawing just 9,544 fans per game.

Wiley Whitney

You can count veteran forward Ryan Whitney among those who would like the Coyotes to stay in Phoenix. The 39-year-old left wing has found the fountain of youth in the desert. He has five goals and 12 points this season.

Breaking it down further, he has five points in his last four games and all but one of his goals have come in Phoenix.

History

The Coyotes have won six of the last seven in this series dating back to Jan. 5, 2010, including two shootout victories. Eight of the last nine Edmonton games have gone under.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Jets at New Jersey Devils

After a tough start to the season, the Jets have won four of six and three of four to improve their record in their first season back in Winnipeg to 5-6-1.

This will be the Jets’ fifth installment in a season-long seven-game road trip, but they are showing no signs of slowing down. On Thursday night in New York, Winnipeg blanked the Islanders 3-0. Ondrej Pavelec saved all 34 shots he faced.

The Devils may have a tough time both scoring the puck and stopping the puck on Saturday. Ilya Kovalchuk pulled a leg muscle on Thursday and is listed questionable.

Will Martin Brodeur or Johan Hedberg be in goal for New Jersey? Brodeur is 0-2 with a 3.90 after allowing five in Wednesday’s home loss to Toronto. Hedberg has let in 10 goals over his last three appearances, although he at least managed to win in shootout (4-3 final) at Philly on Thursday.

The Devils are 1-3 in their last four and 2-5 in their last seven.

Pick: Jets

Pittsburgh Penguins at Los Angeles Kings (-126, 5)

A four-game winning streak in mid-October is certainly a thing of the past for the Kings. They have lost three in a row and four of five heading into Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh.

The stretch hit rock bottom on Thursday, when Los Angeles failed to find the back of the net in a 3-0 home loss to Edmonton. In its last three outings, L.A. has been outscored 9-4.

Pittsburgh has dropped two straight, but the team is clearly in decent form. Both losses came by one goal (including in a shootout on Thursday at San Jose) and the Penguins have still won five of their last seven overall.

Assuming Marc-Andre Fleury is minding the net for Pitt, the Kings may have a tough time ending their scoring drought. Fleury is 7-2-1 with a 1.96 GAA this season and he is 4-1 with just six goals allowed in his last five.

Pick: Penguins
