Spooky Express Christmas random thoughts and gift ideas........
Wishing all my friends here at BangtheBook and Spooky Express a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thank you for all your support and great posts all year long.
-- NFL needs to put back in a rule where every team dresses three QBs every game; even if the #3 QB only plays in an emergency. Dallas is going to have two QBs dressed Sunday if Romo can't play, and Jon Kitna has been a high school teacher the last two years-- he is 41.
-- Dallas brought in five QB suspects to be Kyle Orton's backup against the Eagles Sunday night: Carr-Skelton-Thigpen-Hanie-Bartel, but they settled on Kitna because he knows the offense. Guy has been a teacher for two years and is one injury away from being the QB in a play-in game for the playoffs. Wow.
-- New York Post reports that Josh Brown is the first kicker in Giants history with three field goals of 40+ yards in the same game.
-- Only once since 2000 have two #1 seeds met in the Super Bowl. That was Colts-Saints in 2009.
-- It'll be a shame if the Cardinals don't make the playoffs; they deserve to be in, but they'll need to Bucs to win at New Orleans Sunday, and the Saints are 7-0 at home, so thats probably not happening.
-- Cincinnati Bengals are third team to score 40+ points in four straight home games in same season; '52 Lions, '00 Rams are other two.
-- Expect a ridiculous amount of cash to be thrown at Japanese free agent pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, who is coming here next year. Bronx/Dodgers are expected to try and get him; Cubs and Boston could be involved, too. Red flag: He has 53 complete games, which means that arm has thrown a lot of pitches. Not sure he'll be worth the $20M posting fee, plus salary.
Some Christmas wishes......................
-- Jerry Jones-- A real GM so his football team can compete with the other 31 NFL teams on an even plane. Jones is an amateur as a GM; it shows.
-- Arkansas State football-- A coach who will stay more than one season in Jonesboro. Next year will be their fifth coach in five years.
-- Arizona Cardinals-- A playoff spot they deserve.
-- DirecTV viewers-- Adding the Pac-12 Network; its not a lot to ask.
-- To everyone that has supported the Spooky Express-- A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Spooky Express Snowboarding with a Moose and other random thoughts for Thursday
-- Clippers-Warriors has turned into a heated rivalry; teams play again on January 30. we'll find out who the NBA office thinks are its best refs by what officials they put on that game.
-- Dwight Howard has missed 13 more foul shots than the entire Dallas Mavericks' team. Howard had 20 rebounds last night, is playing really well for the 19-11 Rockets, but 56% isn't good and thats an improvement.
-- Dallas Cowboys signed Jon Kitna for one game; he's been an algebra teacher in state of Washington the last two years. His one week holding the clipboard will earn Kitna $55,294, more than I make in a year.
-- Brooklyn Nets' payroll is $102.2M, by far highest in the NBA; at what point do they pull the plug on Jason Kidd and GM Billy King? Speaking of King, what has he ever done to rate him being an NBA GM?
-- I've got no opinion on the sleeved unfiorms NBA teams wore Christmas Day, but they need to put numbers on the front, so refs can identify the players better. Uniforms in CYO even have numbers on the front.
-- I'm not a big fan of the NBA rule that allows the ball to be advanced to the hash mark in the front court when a timeout is called; it creates more interesting end-of-game situations, but it does so in an artificial way.
-- This season is just 4th time in last 20 years no NBA coaches got fired before Christmas, maybe because 13 were fired last offseason.
-- Toronto Raptors (11-15) are leading their division; only three teams in Eastern Conference are over .500.
-- On other hand, Houston Rockets are 19-11, but wouldn't have the home court edge in first round of the playoffs, if they started today.
-- Knicks are 0-9 vs the West, 9-10 against the East. If ESPN insists on putting them on TV every Christmas, let them play an eastern team.
-- Buffalo (2,386 miles) traveled the farthest to its bowl game, other than two teams that played in Hawai'i. Maryland (27 miles) traveled the shortest distance, other than Tulane, which played on its home field.
-- Interesting that the NHL takes three full days off for Christmas; no games from the 24th-26th; they're also taking an Olympic break from Feb 9th-26th. What happens to teams without lot of Olympic participants?
So the little girl is a Bears fan and her dad gets her a Packers jersey for Christmas as she cries into her moms arms as both parents laugh. See the video below.
-- Looks like Penn State coach Bill O'Brien has emerged as the leading candidate for the Houston Texans' coaching vacancy.
-- DePaul's teams are called the Blue Demons; why don't they wear blue road uniforms? Not sure why teams wear black road uniforms.
-- Why would anyone trade for Andrew Bynum? He's played in 24 of a possible 110 games since leaving the Lakers. Seems like a pain in the butt.
-- There are only three NFL games Sunday with no NFL playoff implications and two of those three, Texans-Titans/Redskins-Giants, will determine the #1 pick in the draft in May. Going to be a very interesting Sunday.
-- Rutgers has had five offensive coordinators in the last five years; their coach was so conservative Saturday, the play-by-play guy was calling him out. They fired three more assistant coaches since this season ended; you need continuity to have a good program. Rutgers doesn't have it yet.
