Spooky Express NFL Betting Preview:
Houston Texans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars- Dec 5, 2013

This Thursday night, we have a game that really doesn’t jump off the page at you, as it’s between two teams who are really just playing for the first pick in the draft.

For the Jacksonville Jaguars, they are 3-9 this year, but have to be happy that they didn’t get anywhere near that 0-16 record that many people had hyped up. The Houston Texans on the other side have been one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL this season, as they are 2-10 overall, and are just looking to find something for the future to be happy about.

The Texans think they may have found a future quarterback in Case Keenum, but he’s had some up and down this year, so it’s hard to tell what will happen with that. Going into Jacksonville isn’t the toughest place to play, but Keenum needs to play well in this nationally televised game, especially after he did a great job of helping keep the Texans right there with the New England Patriots last weekend.

The Jaguars have actually won three of their last four games, with the lone loss coming to a potential playoff team in the Arizona Cardinals. They also beat this Houston team by a score of 13-6 in that span.

The worst part for the Texans? Well, they started this year out 2-0, and have reeled off 10 straight losses from that point. To say that the Texans have been struggling is an understatement, and a massive one at that.

Offensive Woes

These two offenses have simply been struggling. Looking at the Texans you’ll see that they average 19.2 points per game, which isn’t great, and the Jaguars are even worse as they average only 14.5 points per game.

Both teams have had some awful games offensively, but seem to be at least connecting to some level, but not a level that makes me feel confident betting on either team.

Consensus

I’m not going to lie, I absolutely love the Jags in this spot. Grabbing points at home on a nationally televised game against a team that has lost 9 in a row. Cmon Man!

In addition how about this? Our resident capper and article writer, Ryan Knuppel feels........How about a 7 point teaser. Teasers are often overlooked, but you can get a teaser on the Jaguars +10 in front of their home fans, and also add the UNDER 49.5. Both teams have struggled to score, so I feel great about both of those bets, and it could be an excellent option on this game.

Spooky Express Thursday Awesomeness

SPOOKY EXPRESS PLAY OF THE DAY

NFL

JACKSONVILLE +3

– Do sports teams do better playing during the day or night? Well if you’re a West Coast team in the NFL playing the East, lobby for night games. It turns out that playing at night gives West Coast teams a big advantage when it comes to winning and beating the point spread. How do we know this? Research done by Harvard and Stanford researchers figured it out. I guess they’ve run out of everything else to research at these fine institutions.

– Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is fined $100,000 for interfering with a Baltimore punt return on Thanksgiving. The Steelers could also lose a draft pick at the end of the season.

– The prosecutor investigating sexual assault allegations against #1 Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston will deliver his findings today.

– An NBA game between San Antonio and Minnesota in Mexico City was postponed last night when a generator malfunction caused smoke to fill the arena. See our previous post and a couple of videos.

– OK, if you get bored and surf the web for trick shot videos you’re probably even more bored by now. Then again, this kid is 2-years-old. His name is Titus Ashby and he hails from Derby, Kansas.

Here is an early pick with more to come. Of course my heart and wallet are with the Lions today and a win today almost ensures cashing my season win futures. Would be nice to see a Raiders win as well to help the Jets future. Good luck.

NFL

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS +3

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS PK (moneyline)

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS PK (moneyline)

Spooky Express wondering if Urban Meyers is going to play sick again Sunday thoughts

-- Michigan State 34, Ohio State 24-- Buckeyes completed 8-23 passes, converted 1-10 on 3rd down and gave up 304 passing yards as Michigan State moves on to Rose Bowl and Florida State-Auburn to BCS title game. Ohio St. rallied to lead after trailing 17-0, but now they're a disappointed bowl team. Auburn fans (and anyone who hates Ohio State) enjoyed Ohio State's loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten championship last night, foiling the Buckeyes' chance at a national championship. Others with a personal beef—such as, say, some of Meyer's former players and commits at Florida that remained while he left the college football world, only to return at Ohio State not even a year later—took joy in the loss. This is my favorite tweet from Quinton Dunbar at Florida: Lol lets see if Urban Meyer play sick again

-- Auburn 59, Missouri 42-- Auburn ran ball 74 times for 545 yards; almost never see stats like that, maybe when teams play a I-AA opponent. Gus Malzahn coached in high schools for 16 years; what took him so long to get a college job?

-- Rice 41, Marshall 24-- Big day for Sammy the Owl, as Rice wins its first C-USA football title, and basketball team beats South Alabama in triple OT, after blowing a 15-point halftime lead. Not too often Rice has a big day in sports, unless its baseball. Marshall is way better at home than on road.

-- Oklahoma 33, Oklahoma State 24-- Sooners scored two TDs in last 0:19 to deprive rival Cowboys of BCS bowl slot, which now goes to Baylor. Three different QBs threw 7+ passes for Oklahoma in this game.

-- Stanford 38, Arizona State 14-- Cardinal-Michigan State figures to be a darned good Rose Bowl. Spartans will be in Pasadena for first time in 26 years. Hard for college team to beat same team twice in one year-- not too many rematches in college ball, unlike the NFL- good win for Stanford.

-- Fresno State 24, Utah State 17-- Bulldogs won MWC title, but they are 0-4 this season recovering onside kicks; NFL teams are 34-40. David Carr was a flop as the first pick in the NFL Draft; will that hurt his brother Derek in the draft? Young Carr was 36-53/404 in this game. Really thought Utah State was gonna win this game and boy did they have their chances. Losing their starting QB came back to hurt them big in this game.

-- Florida State 45, Duke 7-- Duke is going to bowl for second year in row for first time in school history, but what bowl is going to be real excited about having a team that just lost 45-7, and doesn't have a big following?

Spooky Express nothing is better than football in the snow Monday thoughts .......

-- Can you say CLEAN SWEEP with our NFL picks this week!

-- As they say in baseball free agency, all it takes is one dumb team. And when it comes to Robinson Cano, that team is the Seattle Mariners. The last time the Mariners were in the World Series? That would be never. So will Cano get them there? If you've watched him play every day, flashes of brilliance punctuated by lackadaisical moments, you'd have to answer no. And yet he's getting $240-million over 10 years. Only Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols' contracts are as large or bigger and how have they worked out exactly? As for the New York baseball teams throwing big bucks at Curtis Granderson and Carlos Beltran, being over 30 and playing outfield can be very lucrative (for the player). But as a fan, wouldn't you rather see that money poured into your farm system?

-- U.S. soccer fans have been fretting all weekend how the U.S. can possibly get to the second round of the World Cup this summer with both Portugal and Germany in their group.

-- Eagles 34, Lions 20-- Mystified why several inches of snow was never cleared off field at this game; Detroit led 14-0 with 5:00 left in third quarter, but once snow stopped, Eagles ran 25 plays for 361 yards on their last five drives, all TDs. Not often a team scores TDs on both punt/kick returns and still loses. Detroit is minus-15 in turnovers in its last six games. Personally coach Schwartz deserves to be fired. Horrible adjustments and play calling week after week. He doesnt turn the ball over but there is no way he gets this team ready to play week after week they way he should.

-- Dolphins 34, Steelers 28-- If Miami makes playoffs, Joe Philbin better be Coach of the Year, with all the BS he's put up with this year. Under had been 5-0-1 in Dolphins' last six games, but on a cruddy day, Miami ran ball for 181 yards with an OL thats been better without Incognito/Martin.

-- Broncos 51, Titans 28-- Denver averages 25.1 ppg at home this year, just in the second half- this was the 4th home game this year Broncos scored 30+ points in second half, as thin air in Mile High altitude takes its toll. Titans were -12 in field position, -2 in turnovers- you need to win those categories to beat a team thats better than you. Denver's Matt Prater kicked a 64-yard FG, breaking the all-time record, but at altitude, still not as impressive as Dempsey's 63-yarder at Tulane Stadium.

-- 49ers 19, Seahawks 17-- Niners kicked four FGs, threw pick in red zone, yet still won game they needed lot more than Seattle, which was traveling on a short week after whipping Saints. In two games with Seattle, Kaepernick is 28-57 passing; 49ers have one TD, three FGs in five drives into red zone.

-- Packers 22, Falcons 21-- Green Bay trailed 21-10 at half, held Falcons scoreless in second half, and are still alive at 6-6-1, thanks to sloppy play in Detroit/Chicago. This was their first win without Rodgers; they finish with Cowboys-Steelers-Bears, will need #12 back to win division.

-- Ravens 29, Vikings 26-- Game was 12-7 Minnesota with 3:00 left, then five TDs scored in the last 2:05, one of the craziest stretches in league history. Seemed like once the snow stopped, the defense couldn't do anything on the slick field and there were big plays all over the place. Over the last 50 years, 36 points in the last 2:20 of the 4th quarter is 12 more than any other NFL game. It really was weird to watch.

-- Patriots 27, Browns 26-- Cleveland gagged away a 26-14 lead with 2:00 left, as Patriots scored twice in 0:30, recovering an onside kick. Over their last six games, New England has been outscored by 47 points in first half, but then averaged 26.5 ppg in second half, winning five of the six games.
