SPOOKY EXPRESS BOWLING FOR DOLLARS SELECTION AND ANALYSIS THREAD

Random Thoughts for a big weekend of college football

– Eli Manning refused to play for the Chargers after they drafted him, but his backup QB at Ole Miss got traded to San Diego this week, when the Padres got OF Seth Smith from Oakland for Luke Gregerson.

– Feel bad for Nets’ assistant Lawrence Frank getting demoted after Brooklyn’s 5-12 start, but then you hear Frank will get paid $5.3M over the next four years, for whatever menial tasks he’s been assigned, and you stop feeling bad for him. He’ll probably be the interim coach when they mercifully fire the over matched Jason Kidd later this year.

– If you’re a Twins’ fan, you’re glad they opened their wallets this winter, but are you excited that they spent $73M on Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes? I’m asking, not saying there shouldn’t be excitement, but Hughes especially seems more like a suspect than someone who will be a big help.

– I’m no fan of the Heisman Trophy; think it gets too much talk, especially early in a season, but if Johnny Manziel isn’t one of the four finalists this year, then I’m not sure what criteria they use to pick guys. Jordan Lynch went 6-17 passing in a MAC game last week, what would he do in the SEC? Is he hanging 42 on Alabama? I don’t think so.

– LSU QB Zach Mettenberger apparently tore his ACL against Arkansas and won’t be able to work out before the NFL Draft in April. He and the Murray kid at Georgia are in the same boat now, its too bad.

– Golf is an Olympic sport now? They’ll lose whatever credibility the “Olympic ideal” has/had when Eldrick Woods and his co-workers tee it up for a gold medal. Escorts in Brazil should have a big two weeks, though.

– Boston Celtics are 8-12…….and in first place in the hideous Atlantic Division. Toronto would be in first if they hadn’t blown a 75-48 lead in Oakland Tuesday. Raptors didn’t even cover the game as 8-point dogs after leading by 27 in the third quarter. And you wonder why I dont wager on the NBA for the most part.

– NBA teams have very detailed scouting; for instance, when Michael Carter-Williams of the 76ers shoots from 10+ feet away from the basket, he is 29-64 (45.3%) when he shoots from the left side, 12-61 (19.7%) when he shoots from the middle or right, so you play him tighter on the left side of the floor. Information like that hasn’t always been available, but now it is.

– With Giants going to San Diego this week, lot is being made about how Archie Manning wouldn’t let Eli play for the Chargers; had he not done that, the Giants had already told Ben Roethlisberger they were going to draft him, so they would not have taken Philip Rivers, who obviously wound up in San Diego. NFL history in the last ten years would be a lot different.

– Saints’ airplane had troubles Monday night; they didn’t get out of Seattle until noon ET Tuesday, meaning this is a very short week for their coaches/players, with a big game against Carolina Sunday night.

Sorry I missed out posting from last night although picks are usually posted on our facebook page and / or our website.

Really liked Louisville and was grateful for a victory on the pointspread along with our season total wins future. Tonight we should have a real good game. Leaning towards Bowling Green but see it as a high scoring game.

Spooky Express College Football Betting Preview: Bowling Green Falcons vs. Northern Illinois Huskies- Dec 6, 2013

SPOOKY EXPRESS PLAY OF THE DAY

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NORTHERN ILLINOIS / BOWLING GREEN OVER
57 POINTS

Friday night football time folks, and tonight we have the MAC Championship game, which features two teams who have definitely made some noise this year, with the 9-3 Bowling Green Falcons, and the undefeated, 14th ranked, Northern Illinois Huskies.

The 12-0 Huskies have been the class of the MAC to this point, and Bowling Green will definitely have their work cut out for them against Jordan Lynch and the Huskies.

While both teams have their strengths, we can’t overlook the affect that Lynch has had on the MAC and all of college football this season. He not only has thrown for 2,457 yards, but he’s rushed for 1,755 yards as well. Lynch has 22 passing touchdowns, and 20 rushing touchdowns, so it’s pretty obvious why this team ranks as one of the best offensive teams out there.

Northern Illinois Offense vs. Bowling Green Defense

Without a doubt, this is going to be the story of the game. The Northern Illinois offense ranks 4th overall in rushing yards per game at 318.9, and they are 9th overall in the entire country in points for at 42.8.

Why do those stats stand out so much? Well, Bowling Green has a great defense, as they allow just 13.8 points per game, which is the 5th best in the country. To say it best, Jordan Lynch is going to have his work cut out for him if he wants to take home the MAC Title.

The Huskies are also playing for the non-BCS bowl bid here as well, which is going to be a big factor. Lynch definitely wants to be on that big stage for his final game, and no matter what he’s going to be a player that scouts will be watching. The talks of Jameis Winston, Johnny Manziel, AJ McCarron, and Marcus Mariota for example may be the biggest, but Lynch has produced in a big way.

Consensus

This is going to be a great game, and the sports betting sites had the line starting out around -3. Since that point we’ve seen it jump up to around -4 or -4.5 on many online sportsbooks though. The issue that I see here for Bowling Green is that whenever they did play a team who had a solid offense, they struggled a bit. They gave up 42 to Indiana, 21 to Mississippi State, and 28 to Toledo, which were their three losses.

Spooky Express College Football Betting Preview:
Duke Blue Devils vs. Florida State Seminoles- Dec 7, 2013

One of the most interesting games this weekend in college football’s championship weekend is actually one of the games that has the biggest sports betting lines on it.

The Duke Blue Devils have pretty much shocked everyone, going from an unranked, middle of the pack ACC team, to the team representing the Coastal Division in the ACC Title game. Their reward? The number one ranked Florida State Seminoles and stud quarterback Jameis Winston. They never said earning a BCS Bowl berth is an easy task.

Duke posted an impressive 10-2 record this year, and beat some tough teams on the way to that record as well. I can’t say that they’ve faced an offense, or a defense, similar to what Florida State has though. One thing I do know, is that I’m not ready to doubt the Blue Devils yet though, because this team has pulled through when everyone basically just ignored them.

As for Florida State, it’s been a crazy run. After throttling then 25th ranked Maryland 63-0, they went into Clemson and cleaned up on the Tigers 51-14. After that they rolled through the 7th ranked Miami Hurricanes 41-14, and from there it was pretty much a well-known fact that this team should be playing for a shot at the BCS National Championship. Their one last roadblock is that intriguing Duke team though.

The Offenses

Florida State averages a ridiculous 53.7 points per game, which is second best in the country. That’s a whole lot of points to score, and the Blue Devils are going to have to find a way to play keep up. I do think Duke’s defense is solid, but they haven’t seen Jameis Winston and that offense yet. Duke scores 33.7 points per game, which is still more than solid. Duke does it both through the air and on the ground, and their offensive game plan against FSU will be interesting to watch.
Florida State Defense

11. That’s the number of points that Florida State has allowed per game this year on average. That’s absolutely crazy to see. This defense has been just as good as the offense, so Duke will need to put something together to get after that FSU defense that has given so many teams so many different problems.

Consensus

I’m fully aware of how good the Florida State defense is, but I do think Duke will score and this game should start with an interesting first half. While the sports betting line here is around -29.5 for the Seminoles on most sportsbooks, I’m actually looking at the total on the game. It’s gone anywhere from 61 to 62.5, and I think the over could be a strong bet here. Will make a determination as we get closer to the game.

Spooky Express Championship Saturday red hot picks and randomness

SPOOKY EXPRESS PLAY OF THE DAY

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

UTAH STATE +4

--Temple University announced today that it will drop seven intercollegiate sports: baseball, softball, men's crew, women's rowing, men's gymnastics, and men's track and field, both indoor and outdoor. This is a bullshit tale about trying become a football school. The cuts will save just $3 million of Temple athletics' $44 million annual budget, or not much more than it costs to run one of the FBS's worst football teams. About 150 athletes students are out of luck, though the school announced it will honor their scholarships until they graduate or transfer. The nine full-time coaches aren't so lucky.

-- Robinson Cano takes $240M for ten years from Seattle, shaking up baseball’s free agent landscape. If Jay Z gets the normal 4% take, that’s $8.69M for him. Now Beyonce has enough cash to go grocery shopping this weekend.

-- Curtis Granderson gets $60M for four years to play for the Mets; if they play him, Juan Lagares and Chris Young in the outfield at the same time, that’s a damn good defensive outfield, three CFs.

-- Big news day in Seattle: Washington Huskies replaced Steve Sarkisian with Boise State coach Chris Peterson, who went 92-12 on the blue carpet in Boise. Lot of people consider that an upgrade for the Huskies.

-- Now for the bad news for U-Dub fans: here are the records of the last three coaches who left Boise State for greener pa$ture$. Hint: two of the three work in television now.
*Houston Nutt: 5-6 in one season at Boise. Went 75-48 (42-38 in SEC) at Arkansas, then 24-26 (10-22) in four years at Ole Miss. Works for CBS College Sports now.
* Dirk Koetter: Got Boise’s dominance rolling with 26-10 mark in three years, then went 40-34 (21-28 in Pac-10) at Arizona State, is now OC for the Falcons, after doing same thing for Jacksonville.
* Dan Hawkins: 53-11 at Boise, went 19-39 (10-27 in Big X) at Colorado, worked on ESPN for couple years, went 2-3 this past summer in a cameo in the CFL and is now back on ESPN, where he is actually pretty good on TV.

Bottom line: No coach has left Boise and come close to having as much success as he did with the Broncos.

-- 38-year old Hiroki Kuroda is going to get $16M for next year from Bronx Bombers; he was 0-6 with 6.56 ERA in his last eight starts in ‘13.

-- Tough year for Gary Kubiak, who had a stroke at halftime of a game, came back, then got fired after the Texans lost in Jacksonville Thursday. Am guessing the interim coach will be Wade Phillips, who is also having a rough year, having lost his dad last month. Could Kubiak surface as OC with the Redskins if Mike Shanahan pulls the plug on his overmatched son Kyle?

-- Think about this for a second: Bronx Bombers gave a guy a 7-year contract for $21M a year who played an average of 96 games over the last four years, but let a guy walk who played 159+ games the last seven years, helped them win a World Series and is a better run producer than the oft-injured guy? This makes sense how? Mariners’ first visit to the Bronx is April 29.

-- Mike Napoli got $32M from Boston for two years and Carlos Berltran got $45M for three years in the Bronx. None of these guys pitch; I've been told that pitching is an important part of baseball.

Posted this on our facebook page. What do you think?

Spooky Express question for the weekend...

What do you consider the greatest play of all-time in college football?

1. Chris Davis's unbelievable 109-yard touchdown return in the Auburn-Alabama game and implications it had on the BCS title race.

2. Stanford-California (The Band is on the Field) ending in 1982.
Probably have seen more replays of this than anything else

3. Doug Flutie's Hail Mary pass to Gerard Phelan on the last play of the game to beat Miami on November 23, 1984.

4. Kordell Stewart's 1994 Hail Mary to beat Michigan.

5. Boise State's Statue of Liberty to win the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Utah state? Interesting pick

spooky Posts:4533 Followers:311

Fresno State is so overrated. Utah State has so much the best defense (see Bowling Green last night). They shut down Colorado State and Wyoming the last couple weeks. Fresno State will have to pass to get anywhere and I think the Utah State QB has improved all year after taking over for the original started who was injured.
Defense wins championships and honestly this may be just as close as last nights game. But what do I know. Just my logic.
