Senators at Hurricanes: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Carolina Hurricanes (-115, 5.5)

The Carolina Hurricanes host the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon in a battle between two Eastern Conference teams fighting for wild-card playoff spots. The Hurricanes posted a 4-1 victory on Nov. 24, extending their home dominance over the Senators to 10-0-1 in the last 11 meetings. Carolina is returning home after sweeping a brief two-game road trip but is just 11-10-5 at PNC Arena.

Ottawa has one regulation loss in its last 11 games (7-1-3), six of which have been on the road. Craig Anderson has started eight of nine games this month, but Robin Lehner will get the nod Saturday after recording a 27-save shutout in his only start of 2014. Anton Khudobin is expected to start for the Hurricanes, which would mark his 11th consecutive appearance since returning from an ankle injury.

TV: 12 p.m. ET, RSN East (Ottawa), FSN (Carolina)

ABOUT THE SENATORS (22-19-10): Defenseman Erik Karlsson has 11 points in nine games in January, while Clarke MacArthur leads the team with six goals this month. Blue-liner Marc Methot, who is second on the team in average ice time behind Karlsson, has been scratched for the last two games despite saying he feels well enough to play. Methot’s absence might be explained by an increase in ice time for Jared Cowen, who is averaging 23:45 in January.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (22-19-9): Cam Ward could return soon from a lower-body injury that has kept him out since the end of 2013. Khudobin has fared much better than Ward this season, with a .930 save percentage to Ward’s .895. Alexander Semin has been red-hot of late, tallying six times during his four-game goal-scoring streak.

TRENDS:

* Under is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
* Senators are 1-5 in the last six meetings.
* Hurricanes are 8-3 in their last 11 overall.
* Under is 4-0 in Senators last four vs. Metropolitan.

OVERTIME:

1. Ottawa F Chris Neil scored his 100th career goal Thursday in his 824th game. He has 2,109 career penalty minutes.

2. Hurricanes captain Eric Staal has recorded 36 points in 36 career games against Ottawa.

3. The Senators have the best road power play in the league, converting 24-of-85 opportunities.

Sabres at Blue Jackets: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Sabres at Columbus Blue Jackets (-200, 5.5)

The surging Columbus Blue Jackets look to extend their franchise-best winning streak to nine games on Saturday, when they host the slumping Buffalo Sabres. Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside 26 shots against his former team as the Blue Jackets celebrated the 1,000th game in franchise history with a 5-2 victory over Philadelphia on Thursday. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner, Bobrovsky also was dominant by stopping all three shootout attempts in last weekend's 4-3 triumph over Buffalo.

While Columbus has been red-hot, Buffalo's play has mimicked the ice-cold weather. The Sabres suffered four consecutive 4-3 setbacks - including two via shootout - before falling for a fifth time as they dropped a 5-3 decision to Carolina on Thursday. "We're finding ways to lose hockey games versus playing ways to win hockey games," Sabres interim coach Ted Nolan said.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG (Buffalo), FSN Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE SABRES (13-29-7): Tyler Ennis has scored three goals and set up four others during his career-best six-game point streak - and notched a pair of assists against the Blue Jackets last Saturday. Ennis was absent from Friday's practice with what Nolan deemed a "maintenance day" but is expected to face Columbus. Cody Hodgson joined Ennis by scoring against the Hurricanes and has recorded three goals and three assists in six games since returning from an upper-body injury.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (26-20-4): Brandon Dubinsky has collected a goal and an assist in two of his last three contests overall and has scored in both meetings with Buffalo this season. Linemate Matt Calvert also has fared well, scoring the go-ahead goal in the second period before setting up Dubinsky for the eventual game-winner versus the Flyers. Bobrovsky has been tabbed the starter Saturday as he has defeated Buffalo twice this season and is 4-1-1 against the Sabres over his career.

TRENDS:

* Blue Jackets are 8-0 in their last eight overall.
* Over is 5-0 in Sabres last five overall.
* Over is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings.
* Sabres are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings.

OVERTIME:

1. Former Blue Jacket enforcer Zenon Konopka notched an assist on Thursday for his first point in seven games with the Sabres.

2. Buffalo G Ryan Miller has dropped four of six (2-3-1) meetings with Columbus - including both this season.

3. Unrestricted free agent Vinny Prospal retired on Friday, one year removed from finishing as the Blue Jackets' top point scorer with 12 goals and 18 assists.

Rangers at Devils: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (+109,5)

An already-fierce rivalry between the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers will ratchet up a notch when the teams square off at Yankee Stadium on Sunday as part of the NHL's Stadium Series. The stakes are high regardless, with the Rangers and Devils among six teams separated by three points in the Metropolitan Division, and the venue will heighten the moment. "It’s an awe-inspiring place," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "I think walking out with 50,000 or 60,000 people in here is going to be magical.”

The Rangers are 0-2-1 versus the Devils this season entering the first of two straight at Yankee Stadium - they will face the New York Islanders in the Bronx on Wednesday night. New York has experience in an outdoor contest, winning at Philadelphia 3-2 in the 2012 Winter Classic, and coach Alain Vigneault said he hopes to gain some insight from his players. “They all said the same thing: Once you’re on the ice, if there’s no snow ... it’s fine," Vigneault said. "The conditions are supposed to be ideal, except it’s going to be a little cool. So let’s bundle up and let’s play some hockey.”

TV: 12:30 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC

ABOUT THE RANGERS (27-23-3): Although New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist termed it a game-time decision, he is expected to wear pinstriped pads in honor of playing at the historic home of the Yankees. Lundqvist starred in the Winter Classic victory over the Flyers, stopping a penalty shot in the final seconds, but he called playing at Yankee Stadium the "experience of a lifetime." "We wanted to do this for a long time,” Lundqvist said. “We talked about it when they started the Winter Classic games, that hopefully one day we’d get the opportunity to play at Yankee Stadium."

ABOUT THE DEVILS (22-19-11): Cory Schneider may have supplanted Martin Brodeur as New Jersey's No. 1 netminder, but there was little doubt that the NHL's career winningest goaltender would get the starting nod Sunday. DeBoer said Schneider's recent play - nine goals allowed in his last eight starts - was hard to ignore but called starting future Hall-of-Famer Brodeur "the right thing to do" - a move with which Schneider agreed. "I don’t think there’s been anybody as important as Marty to this team the last 20 years, so it’s bit of an easy decision," Schneider said.

TRENDS:

* Under is 3-1-4 in the last eight meetings.
* Rangers are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings.
* Rangers are 5-1 in their last six road games.
* Under is 4-0-1 in Devils last five vs. Metropolitan.

OVERTIME:

1. Brodeur will make his 100th regular-season start versus the Rangers, owning a 49-30-5 record with 15 ties and nine shutouts against them.

2. Lundqvist is 28-14-6 with seven shutouts lifetime against New Jersey.

3. Devils F Jaromir Jagr needs one assist to move past Mario Lemieux (1,033) and into sole possession of 10th place on the all-time list.

Expect road wins and low scores for outdoor NHL Stadium Series
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL is preparing to invade Yankee Stadium for a pair of outdoor games Sunday and Wednesday, and fans and bettors alike should expect low-scoring affairs.

The NHL's Stadium Series kicks off Saturday with a game at Dodger Stadium between the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks. But the focus will quickly shift to the East Coast, where the Rangers face New Jersey and the cross-town Islanders in a four-day span. They mark the second and third game of the series, with the fourth and final edition being played March 1 at Chicago's Soldier Field between the Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Players will notice a few significant differences between playing indoors and plying their trade in an open-air environment. Most notably, temperature fluctuations can play havoc with both the quality of the ice surface and the hardness of the puck.

Rangers forward Carl Hagelin acknowledges this, but isn't concerned.

"It's just like any other game," he told the New York Post last week. "The puck gets a little bit colder, so it bounces around a little bit more, but other than that, you play on your adrenaline and usually you can skate a lot more because it’s fresh air.”

If past history is any indication, the Yankee Stadium double-dip will make for prime Under bets. Temperatures for Sunday's game are expected to be in the mid-20s while Wednesday will see the mercury fall a few degrees colder with wind chill values potentially dipping below zero. Here's a look at the eight previous outdoor games, along with the relevant betting numbers:

November 22, 2003: Montreal 4 at Edmonton 3 (O/U: 5)

The first of two Heritage classics went to the visiting team, while the bone-chilling temperatures at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium didn't deter the teams from easily going Over.

January 1, 2008: Pittsburgh 2 at Buffalo 1 (SO) (O/U:5.5)

The Penguins edged the Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium, with the teams combining for 62 shots but still falling well below the total.

January 1, 2009: Detroit 6 at Chicago 4 (O/U:5.5)

The Red Wings made it three straight outdoor victories for the road team, prevailing in a Wrigley Field slugfest that remains the highest-scoring outdoor game in NHL history.

January 1, 2010: Philadelphia 1 at Boston 2 (OT) (O/U:5.5)

The Bruins provided the Fenway Park faithful with the first home victory at an outdoor contest, shading the Flyers in a thrilling overtime contest that saw the teams combine for just 51 shots.

January 1, 2011: Washington 3 at Pittsburgh 1 (O/U:6)

Despite a premium matchup featuring two of the league's most potent offenses, the Capitals and Penguins played to the Under in the Heinz Field showdown that will be best remembered for Sidney Crosby's career-altering concussion.

February 20, 2011: Montreal 0 at Calgary 4 (O/U:5)

The Flames earned the first shutout in NHL outdoor history, clinching an Under while giving the home side just its second victory in six outdoor games.

January 2, 2012: New York Rangers 3 at Philadelphia 2 (O/U)

Citizens Bank Park was the site of the Rangers' first taste of outdoor action, an entertaining victory over the Flyers. The teams narrowly missed surpassing the total despite combining for 69 shots.

January 1, 2014: Toronto 3 at Detroit 2 (SO) (O/U:5)

The Maple Leafs and Red Wings did battle at the Big House in front of a record crowd of more than 105,000 people; Toronto made it six wins in eight tries for the road team, while the clubs provided the first push in outdoor history.

Total: Road team 6-2-0; O/U 2-5-1
