Preview: Celtics (9-12) at Knicks (5-13)

Date: December 08, 2013 12:00 PM EDT

Win consecutive games after dropping nine straight and your season has renewed optimism. Win five of seven after a six-game skid and you're in first place.

Welcome to the Atlantic Division.

Those have been the respective cases for the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, who each go for their third straight win Sunday at Madison Square Garden in a matchup of teams within the NBA's weakest division.

The Celtics (9-12) find themselves atop the Atlantic despite already experiencing losing streaks of four and six games in the first month of the season.

"We're at the top of the division," forward Kris Humphries said. "That's all that's important."

The Knicks (5-13) have won back-to-back games for the first time after opening 3-13, yet find themselves only 2 1/2 games out of the division lead. Their 121-83 home win over Orlando on Friday was the NBA's second most lopsided result of the season.

New York is coming off its two best games of 2013-14, shooting a combined 55.0 percent against the Nets and Magic to win by an average of 34.0 points. The Knicks crossed the bridge to Brooklyn for Thursday's game shooting 42.1 percent and riding a nine-game slide.

"I knew it was going to eventually happen. I'm glad that it did," Knicks point guard Raymond Felton said. "It was a good night to happen in Brooklyn, then we came back tonight and showed it wasn't a fluke. That's what a lot of people were trying to say. We came out tonight to really prove that."

Without Amare Stoudemire, who isn't playing back-to-back nights following offseason knee surgery, the Knicks had seven players score in double figures against the Magic.

Carmelo Anthony's 20 points and 11 rebounds led the way. Anthony had 19 against the Nets and is averaging 22.2 in wins while putting up 26.8 in losses. He totaled 22 shots in the last two games after averaging 22.2 through the first 16. He's shooting 49.4 percent in victories and 41.8 percent in losses.

"I wanted to try to do something a little different to see if it worked," Anthony said. "Me scoring 30 wasn't working."

New York's outside shooting, however, is working with a 33-for-61 mark in the two wins.

Boston's recent victories have been more modest, though the Celtics seem to have found some consistency in bouncing back from a 4-10 start.

Friday's 106-98 home win over Denver was led by guards Jordan Crawford (22 points, eight assists) and Avery Bradley (18 points). Crawford is shooting 63.0 percent and averaging 23.5 points in the Celtics' consecutive wins.

Humphries contributed 18 points off the bench against Denver. He's seen increased minutes with Kelly Olynyk out with a sprained ankle, though Friday's output doubled his previous season-high scoring night.

"I have a lot of faith in Kris, I have a lot of faith in Kelly, I've got a lot of faith in all five bigs," Boston coach Brad Stevens told the team's official website.

"We talked about that before, but the bottom line is I guess when you look across the league it seems like every team we play has one of their bigs out. So to have five of them that all really, really compliment each other, that gives you the flexibility of four being available on a given night."

Olynyk will be sidelined for an eighth straight game, while New York has played without center Tyson Chandler since Nov. 8 due to a fractured right fibula.

The teams are meeting for the first time since the Knicks beat the Celtics in six games last season in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. They've also won three straight regular-season contests against them.

Preview: Heat (14-5) at Pistons (9-10)

Date: December 08, 2013 6:00 PM EDT

While Dwyane Wade returned to help Miami regroup from consecutive defeats, he could be back on the sidelines Sunday versus surging Detroit.

That could spell trouble for the visiting Heat, who couldn't handle the Pistons without Wade earlier this week.

After falling 107-97 to Detroit on Tuesday and 107-87 at Chicago two nights later, Miami (15-5) pulled out a crucial 103-82 win at Minnesota on Saturday. LeBron James had 21 points, a season-high 14 rebounds and eight assists while Wade scored 19 after missing the previous two games, one due to lingering knee trouble and the other because of illness.

"Don't talk about it, just go do it. To me, when I say it, I go and make it happen," James said. "We don't like losing back-to-back games, and we definitely don't want to lose three in a row."

Wade, though, may return to the bench as the Heat play the second of a back-to-back. Miami is 2-3 without him this season.

"All of it's frustration," Wade said. "Everyone wants to be 100 percent every day. But it's a part of the game. Everyone deals with it in their own way. The only thing I can focus on is when I'm able to get back on the court and go out there and help my team win."

The Heat surely could have used Wade against Detroit, which scored 29 points off 19 turnovers Tuesday. Seven players scored in double figures for the Pistons, including a combined 34 off the bench from Kyle Singler and Rodney Stuckey. Andre Drummond added 10 to go along with 18 boards as Detroit outrebounded Miami 46-34.

"They're a huge team, we know that," James said after posting 23 points and six turnovers in the loss. "Records don't matter when we play teams. Obviously teams play a totally different pace and totally different style when they get up to play us. There is no complacency with us; it is the name of the game. You can't look at records and say they should win. We have to go out and play and if you don't you get beat."

The Pistons (10-10) have yet to lose this month, outscoring opponents by an average of 12.3 points during a four-game winning streak. Brandon Jennings scored a season-high 33 points as Detroit got back to .500 with Saturday's 92-75 rout at short-handed Chicago.

"He made plays when we really needed him to make plays," coach Maurice Cheeks said. "That is what he is evolving to. He knows when we need to make a play. We need him to play like this and shoot the ball the way he is capable of shooting."

The Pistons held the Bulls to season lows in scoring and field goal percentage (33.3). While Detroit put together two four-game runs last season, it hasn't won five in a row since Dec. 4-12, 2009.

"I like the way we are playing," Cheeks said. "I think we have been getting better every game. Our defense has been getting better. Clearly our offense is a little better. I like our flow, I like our defensive flow, I like our offensive flow, I think we are getting better in all phases."

Jennings had 15 points in Miami last week, and the Pistons may need to lean on him more with Stuckey's status up in the air. Stuckey, who exited in the second quarter Saturday with a sore left knee, is second on the team with 15.4 points per contest.

Despite Tuesday's win, the Pistons are 3-14 in their last 17 against the Heat.

Preview: Magic (6-13) at Rockets (14-7)

Date: December 08, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

While Dwight Howard grew unhappy in Orlando after eight seasons with the Magic, he's surely pleased with how things are working out in Houston.

The Rockets go for an eighth home win in nine games Sunday night when Howard faces his former team.

Houston, which signed Howard to a four-year deal worth roughly $88 million this summer, has opened 14-7 while posting an NBA-leading 107.9 points per game. The Rockets have also started to clamp down defensively, holding teams to an average of 95.1 during a 6-2 stretch.

After falling 109-103 at woeful Utah on Monday and 97-88 to Phoenix two nights later, Houston cruised to a needed 105-83 win over usually high-scoring Golden State on Friday. James Harden led the way with 34 points while Howard scored 22 and pulled down 18 rebounds for his team-leading 12th double-double.

"The last two games before tonight were terrible, and we don't want to play like that again," Howard said. "We wanted to come in with a lot of energy, defend, push the pace, and win.

"(There) has to be a sense of urgency for us to get a good win, and that's how we played. We're getting a lot better, our chemistry is still growing."

Terrence Jones also came up big with 16 points and 10 boards as the Rockets outscored the Warriors 54-36 in the paint and held them to a season-low 35.5 percent shooting.

"When me and him (Jones) are in the paint causing havoc on both ends of the floor it makes it tough for teams, and we have to bring that every night," Howard said. "We've got to bring that intensity and effort every single night for us to win."

Howard was at his best in his first two matchups against Orlando (6-13) while with the Lakers last season, averaging 30.0 points and 15.5 rebounds. The Magic, who saw Howard go a combined 34 of 60 from the foul line in splitting those games, may try to implement the same strategy.

Orlando has dropped a season worst-tying four straight and 11 of 14, and things won't get any easier if Nikola Vucevic can't go again. The third-year center, averaging 14.7 points and a team-best 10.9 boards, is uncertain to be available after missing the last two games with a sprained left ankle.

"We can't wait on that. That can't be a crutch for us," coach Jacque Vaughn said. "Guys have to step up and be ready to play every night. That's the challenge, that's the job you have as a professional."

Vucevic's presence was certainly missed in Friday's 121-83 loss at New York. Arron Afflalo had 20 points, Victor Oladipo scored 17 and Jameer Nelson added 13 and nine assists in his first game back since missing three with a foot injury.

"It's all a learning process for this team. It's frustrating, but this is the game of basketball and this is how it's going to be sometimes," Oladipo told the team's official website. "We just have to learn from nights this."

Three of the Magic's last four losses have come by at least 18 points. Orlando has allowed 108.8 per contest in going 1-8 on the road,.

"We have a lot of games and a lot of practices ahead of us and a lot of time together to get better," Nelson said. "We just have to focus on that. The attention to detail has to be a lot better in terms of us knowing situations and individual personnel."

Orlando had taken five straight from Houston before giving up 114.5 points in losing both meetings last season.

Preview: Pacers (17-2) at Thunder (14-4)

Date: December 08, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

The Indiana Pacers easily dispatched a leading team in the Western Conference in one of the final games of a lengthy road trip.

They won't have to wait long to face another one of the West's best.

Indiana will try to conclude its five-game trek by ending the Oklahoma City Thunder's perfect home record Sunday night.

After trailing by 13 in the first half, the Pacers (18-2) led by as many as 26 in the fourth quarter of a 111-100 victory against San Antonio and snapped an 11-game skid to the perennial title contender. Paul George's 28 points led seven players in double figures, and David West scored 20 while making 9 of 12 shots.

"I couldn't be happier with how they played, particularly in the second and third quarter," coach Frank Vogel said. "Second quarter, getting back in the game, but in the third quarter, really busting it open. Tough to pick a star in the game with as many contributions as we got. Just great balance and a great team win."

The victory boosted Indiana to 3-1 on its trip and was also its ninth in the last 10 overall. The Pacers will try to close out their trek by beating a team that's been equally as hot.

Oklahoma City (14-4) bounced back from its lone defeat in its last 10 games - 111-104 at Portland on Wednesday - with a 109-95 win in New Orleans on Friday.

"We were really disappointed in how we lost last game and wanted to be better," said Kevin Durant, who scored a team-leading 29 points. "We're a really good team after losses."

The Thunder, 9-0 on their own floor, will seek their best start there since they went 12-0 as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1993-94. Oklahoma City has won seven of its last eight home games against Indiana and the past three by an average of 13.7 points.

The Pacers are the league's only other team without a home loss so far, also going 9-0.

"We're going to play against a very good team that is playing extremely well right now, so it's going to be a challenge," guard Thabo Sefolosha told the team's website. "If we focus on us and do the things we know we're good at and are successful at doing, we'll be okay."

The Thunder have taken four of five overall in the series and won last season's two games by a combined 33 points. Durant averaged 30.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in those two victories and his 30.1-point average in 11 career matchups with Indiana is his second-best against any opponent.

Russell Westbrook is averaging 26.0 points, 8.2 assists and 7.2 rebounds in his last five games against the Pacers.

George is averaging 10.3 points and shooting 31.1 percent in his four career games versus the Thunder but is among the league's leading scorers with 24.8 points per game this season. He's averaged 26.6 on the road.

West is averaging 25.0 points and shooting 54.8 percent shooting in his last six visits to Oklahoma City.
