Spooky wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgivakuh NFL Express

Spooky Express Random Thoughts and Happy Chanukah

– Bo Jackson is so cool. Blake Leeper was born with his legs ending at the knees. Today, he’s a Paralympian, earning medals in the 2012 Paralympic Games and 2013 IPC World Championships. Also relevant: he loves Bo Jackson. Jackson, the legendary two-sport athlete who continued his MLB career even after a hip replacement, helped motivate Leeper to become a Paralympic athlete. During Leeper’s appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show, Arsenio Hall surprised Leeper by bringing out his idol. Leeper’s face is priceless when he realizes what the hell’s happening. (Skip to the three-minute mark for the payoff if you’re an impatient person.) See below.

– Rogers Communications in Canada made a 12-year, $5.2B deal with the NHL to broadcast hockey throughout Canada; this includes all platforms, languages, so that’s a lot of cash being injected into the NHL’s economy. Still hard to believe the league has teams in Phoenix/Raleigh/ Nashville but not in Hamilton/Quebec City/Saskatoon or even a second team in Toronto.

– Do you think Mark Sanchez watches Jets games and laughs up his sleeve, as in, “Bet you wished I was playing now, suckers…..”? I’m telling you, up until Flacco/Ryan in 2008, rookie QBs just didn’t play this early in their careers and in this case, I’m thinking its not a positive change.

– Going into Tuesday’s NBA games, there were 17 teams over .500; 13 of the 17 are in the West. So if the playoffs started today, four sub-.500 teams would make the playoffs, five teams over .500 would miss out. This will correct itself for the most part, between now and April, but wow, the east has been terrible so far.

– Green Bay Packers’ guard Josh Sitton had this to say about this week’s opponents, the Detroit Lions:

“They go after quarterbacks, their entire defense takes cheap shots all the time. That’s what they do, that’s who they are. They’re a bunch of dirtbags or scumbags. I mean, that’s just how they play.” Sitton is number 71 for the Packers; they play the early game Thursday. Lets hope the Detroit Lions can shut him up on the field and scoreboard tomorrow. Roar!!

– Speaking of which, if a TV network owns the rights to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and airs it before Thanksgiving, they should be forced by federal law to let another network televise this classic program in December where it belongs.

– Cleveland Browns signed QB Alex Tanney, who threw 157 TD passes at D-III Monmouth; you know the QB pool is getting thin when kids who didn’t get a college scholarship are getting put on rosters.

– Northern Illinois football team wore uniforms Tuesday with “The Hard Way” on the back, where the names usually are. Not sure who thought this was a good idea, but I would disagree with them.

– I’m already tired of some college hoop analysts whining about the length of games; if you don’t like it, quit and go get a real job. Players, coaches will adjust, there will be less fouling and a better game will result. You get the feeling some coaches are using analysts as mouthpieces to get their opinions heard.

– Redskins’ biggest question heading into the offseason: Can regain Robert Griffin III his speed and become a dual threat QB again? He can’t even scramble out of bounds right now; its not pretty to watch. If he can’t run, he’s really not an NFL-caliber QB, certainly not a starter.

– Last year at this time, critics were sniping at the Rams for not drafting RGIII and instead grabbing four draft picks for his slot in the draft, the last of which is Washington 1st round pick next April. Haven’t heard anything from those critics in a while. That’s the thing about critics; its easy to hide in the bushes when you’re wrong. Lot harder to be in the spotlight, making difficult decisions. In this case, with Redskins 3-8, looks like the Rams made a great decision.

– Please be careful traveling today; lot of bad weather around the country. Want everyone to have a healthy and happy holiday, so be careful.

Great stuff as always Spook! Saw that this is the first time that these holidays coincide since 1888 and it will be something like another 77,000 years until it happens again....almost like you guys get cheated out of Thanksgiving this year since I assume everyone is together eating anyway?

However you do it hope you have a happy one!

Spooky Express wrapping up an amazing weekend of Rivalry games

– This is the incredulously jubilant call from the Auburn booth. Rod Bramblett stars again this week with a guttural “They’re not gonna keep them off the field tonight.” On the other end of the spectrum is the ‘Bama call. It is merely an emotionless recitation of facts unfolding before poor Eli Gold’s face. “There’s nobody there for Alabama.” Check it out below.

– Auburn 34, Alabama 28– My question is this: What percentage of the time does the backup kicker make a 56-yard FG, when the starting kicker is so bad? Wouldn’t they have been better off just going to OT? Not a lot of athletes on the FG team, to cover the return of a short kick. Easy for me to second-guess, but this play will be shown on TV for the next 50 years, and it never should’ve happened.

– Ohio State 42, Michigan 41– Wolverines were outgained 407-158 last week at Iowa; they had 603 yards in this game, 451 thru the air. What if the Buckeyes draw Baylor or Texas A&M in a bowl game? Could be ugly. Brady Hoke went for two points and the win because he was using a backup kicker and his defense couldn’t stop Ohio State. It just didn’t work.

– Duke 27, North Carolina 25– Duke is 10-2 and headed to play Florida State in the ACC title game next week. Should be noted that when Ole Miss hired Ed Orgeron as head coach in 2005, they fired David Cutcliffe, who is on top of the world eight years later. Life can be funny sometimes.

– UCLA 35, USC 14– Here you have a coach (Jim Mora) who won games in the NFL, against an interim coach (Orgeron); Bruins kicked USC’s butt for second year in a row. Vandy coach James Franklin would be a good choice to be the next coach of the Trojans although you gotta love coach “O”.

– Missouri 28, Texas A&M 21– Auburn-Mizzou is not going to move the TV ratings meter much next Saturday, despite it being the SEC title game.

– Penn State 31, Wisconsin 24– Lions were 24-point underdogs in game where both teams had 339 passing yards, but Badgers threw 25 more times than Penn State, which was 0-3 on the road coming into this game.

– Southern Miss 62, UAB 27– Golden Eagles had been 0-23 the last two years before outscoring Blazers 49-6 in second half to get off the schneid. Southern Miss’ coach LY was Ellis Johnson, who was fired after one dismal season; he is now the defensive coordinator at Auburn. Life can be funny.

– Georgia 41, Georgia Tech 34 OT– Dawgs trailed 20-0 with 2:00 left in first half with QB playing his first meaningful minutes; Hutson Mason went 22-36/299 passing and led the comeback win. Has to be a bitter loss for the Yellow Jackets, who almost never win this game.

– Iowa State 52, West Virginia 44 OT– Cyclones trailed 31-7 midway in second quarter, rallied to hand West Virginia a discouraging loss. Should be mentioned that WVU’s athletic director is Oliver Luck, Andrew’s dad– their move to the Big 12 hasn’t been good for either their football or basketball. At 4-8 in football, safe to say the natives are restless.

– Oregon 36, Oregon State 35– Ducks won this game with 0:29 left, but what is up with the Beavers? They lost their last five games to finish at 6-6, trailing 62-6 at Washington last week, then they almost beat the Ducks.

Swept the board on Thursday and why I always buy the point or take the moneyline. Here are a few more for Sunday.

NFL

MINNESOTA VIKINGS PK (moneyline)

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS -3 (rather take moneyline but number is too high)

ST. LOUIS RAMS +9 (buy pt)

Also playing some overs with Minnesota Vikings and like Cincinnati Bengals and AJ Green to score some points today.
