Spooky's back from Punta Cana Weekly College Football Express

Spooky Express Random Thoughts.....

-- Interesting free agent baseball season. Is anyone dumb enough to give out contracts that last 8, 9 or 10 years? Haven't owners learned from the likes of Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols? As usual all it takes is one dumb owner. But if they all suddenly get smart will the players cry collusion? Can't wait to see what happens with Robinson Cano. As usual, the Yankees may wind up bidding against themselves. We shall see. According to CBSSports.com Cano and the Yankees are $150-million apart. A bridge too far?

-- I am told one million PS4 consoles were sold the first day they were available, just in North America. One thing I’ve successfully avoided are video games, but lot of people really like them.Read once where the wife of an NBA player had his video game stuff FedEx’ed to him on the road when he forgot it for a road trip- she was afraid if he couldn’t play video games in his hotel, he’d be out in the night clubs cheating on her. Lesser of two evils….lol

-- Matthew Stafford had 362 passing yards thru three quarters Sunday, then went 0-10 in fourth, as Detroit fell apart and lost to a sub-par Steeler team, 37-27. After Calvin Johnson, Lions have terrible receivers; the most expensive pizza in America this fall might’ve been the one Nate Burleson was bringing home when he got into an accident and broke his arm. Lions really miss him. As in really, really miss him.

-- The San Francisco Giants are expected to sign Atlanta free agent pitcher Tim Hudson. Hudson made a name for himself in the Bay Area with the A's.

-- The Giants, left for dead at 0-6, are now very much alive at 4-6. Sunday they have a showdown with Dallas one of the two teams they're chasing. Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul went into verbal hyperdrive saying "It's going to be a fight. It's going to be a dogfight. There's going to be a lot of blood spilled out there." How lovely. I'm starting to believe athletes should be banned from twitter. And maybe they should issue a gag-order period.

-- College Football picks and analysis posted later today.

NCAA Football Betting Preview: Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Toledo Rockets

In probably one of the biggest MAC Conference games of the entire year, the Northern Illinois Huskies take their 10-0 record, and 16th ranked team in the country into Toledo to play the 7-3 Rockets.

Why is this game so huge? Well, winning this could clinch a chance to play in the MAC title game for the Huskies, who are coming off of a very important win against a strong Ball State team last week. It took until late in the fourth for them to put Ball State away, but they got it done, and remained undefeated.

Northern Illinois is 6-0 in MAC play, while Toledo is sitting just behind at 5-1 in MAC play. For Toledo, this is the game that will decide whether or not they get a shot at a MAC title as well. They have Ball State at 6-1 in front of them (who they lost to), and of course NIU at 6-0, but losing this game means that they are out of the hunt for a potential shot to play for the MAC.

Even with a win though, they’ll need some help to pass Ball State.

After the loss to Ball State back on September 28th, this Toledo team got on a roll, and won five straight games leading up to this one. For NIU, they’ve had some close wins, but probably the most impressive were the wins against Ball State, but also the opening game of their year when they beat Iowa by three.
Northern Illinois Offense

Northern Illinois does it differently than many of the top college teams do, as their strength really comes from the run game. They rank 8th in the entire country in rushing yards per game at a ridiculous 303.8 per game.

When a team really excels at running the ball, you don’t expect them to rank as high as the Huskies do in points. They are 6th in the country in points per game at 44.6 per game. Their passing game isn’t bad by any means though, as they rank 54th in the country at 244 yards per game.
Toledo Defense

A key reason why I’m looking hard at the betting line of -2 (-3 in some places) for the Northern Illinois Huskies, is that the Toledo defense just doesn’t seem strong enough to slow down this great NIU offense. Toledo ranks 73rd in the country in points per game allowed, as they give up 27.7 points per game, but outside of playing Missouri earlier this year, they haven’t seen an offense like Northern Illinois’ on the rest of their schedule.
Consensus

I’m very surprised that this spread is so low, but I’ve seen it bounce back and forth between -2, -2.5, and -3 for the Huskies. Regardless, if you can get it for a field goal or less at your online sportsbook I recommend you take it.

I do think that NIU wins this game by a touchdown to 10 points, but we shouldn’t have to worry about that as I don’t think the line will go much above -3 here on Wednesday Night Football! As always Spooky Express advises playing the moneyline on anything below 3 points.

Spooky Express and the beer funneling Grandma for Saturday's random thoughts.....

-- Lets get the important stuff out of the way first: apparently singer Joan Jett got removed from the South Dakota float at the Macy's parade next week because she is a vegetarian. What is this world coming to?

-- Good thing they refurbished Madison Square Garden; combined record of Knicks and Rangers: at home 5-11, on road, 9-8.

-- Cardinals traded 3B David Freese to the Angels for OF Peter Bourjos, which is bad news if Jon Jay is on your fantasy team. Looks as if Carpenter will move to 3B and Kolten Wong will play 2B for the Redbirds.

-- Marc Gasol left Friday's game with a non-contact knee injury, which is usually bad news. Memphis is 7-6, but they're screwed if Gasol is out for an extended time. Somewhere, Lionel Hollins is just shaking his head, trying to figure out why Memphis fired him after he went 56-26 last year.

-- Navy 58, San Jose State 52 OT-- Spartans tied game with 0:00 left on a 4th down pass, but had no shot against Navy's option offense in OT. Navy ran ball for 432 yards; QB Reynolds had 240 by himself. We gave out the Over at the forum.

-- Doug Collins is a tremendous addition to ESPN's NBA coverage; he was talking about the relationship between coaches/teams last night, in light of how horrible the Nets are playing. He sounded exasperated, as if there are owners/GMs who think anyone can coach an NBA team. It ain't easy, and people in Brooklyn are finding that out now.

-- And lets hand it to a 75-year-old grandma who was funneling beers at a Penn State-Purdue tailgate Saturday. This is absolutely tremendous. 75-year-old. Grandma. Funneling beers. Look at her! And she does a damned good job of it, arm raised in triumph as the beer funnels down her throat, capped off by a quick shaking out of the cobwebs. Total pro moves.
