This week two teams in the NFL will meet that are fighting for their playoff lives. If the Baltimore Ravens or the New York Jets want to make the playoffs they will need to win this week or risk being eliminated. The Jets were not expected to compete for the playoffs and have been a pleasant surprise, while the Ravens are defending champions and have fallen short of their expectations.
New York Jets at Baltimore Ravens Odds
The opening NFL point spread for this game has the Ravens listed as (-30 point favorites. The ugly Jets loss against Buffalo a week ago has persuaded the NFL bettors to back the Ravens as over 70 percent of the early bets are on the home team. That move has caused a push in the point spread and the line has now climbed to (-4) at some of the most reputable online sportsbooks.
This game is crucial for the playoff race. The Ravens (4-6) are one game behind the Jets for the last playoff spot in the AFC. The next few weeks should sort out a crowded postseason race in the AFC, where there are two teams at 5-5 (Jets and Miami Dolphins) and six teams at 4-6 (Ravens, Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers). A win over the Jets, along with a Dolphins' loss Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, would create a bigger logjam. A loss for the Ravens would drop them two games behind the Jets with five weeks remaining.
So, while the Ravens have their worst record this late in the season under Harbaugh, they could be in a worse position if not for the parity in the AFC. The only thing that is standing in their way is the New York Jets who are looking to make the playoffs as well.
The latest football betting trends for this game reveal that the Ravens have some wagering angles backing them in this game. The Ravens are 5-0 against the spread (ATS) in their last 5 games after accumulating less than 150 yards passing in their previous game, 6-1-2 ATS in their last 9 games in November and 5-1 ATS in the last six home games. The Jets are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games in November, 1-5 ATS when playing a team with a losing record and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games when playing a team with a losing home record.
