Thursday's Six Pack plus 3: Greetings from Florida

9) UConn has five coaches on its football staff who have 29+ years of coaching experience; thats good for teaching, but who does the legwork for recruiting? Recruiting is a younger man's game.

8) Having the third and fourth week of NBA play cancelled means that Carmelo Anthony's return to Denver is shot, as is one of Lebron James' two visits to Cleveland. Still think the whole season will be cancelled.

7) ESPN has upgraded its afternoon TV shows; the numbers show isn't bad at 3:30; the blonde on that show has a big future. Surprisingly, Dan LeBatard has a show with his dad, and it is terrific. LeBatard comes off as an obnoxious jerk when he's on TV by himself, but with his dad, he's lot more likeable and the show works. Its lighthearted and fun.

6) Why on God's green earth does ESPN put Stephen A Smith on the air? He and Mad Dog Russo are the two most annoying people to ever grace our nation'a airwaves, and that includes Morton Downey Jr, Joan Rivers and anyone who has ever been on Survivor. Stephen A needs to go.

5) I had no idea the Pan Am Games were going on until I read that one of the best prospects on my sons fantasy baseball team tore thumb ligaments and needed surgery. Terrific. Guy gets hurt playing in freakin' Panama.

4) Philadelphia Eagles have won their last 12 post-bye games; Patriots have won their last eight, the two longest post-bye win streaks ever, in the relatively short history of byes. Both teams have tough games this week, the Iggles hosting Dallas, the Patriots visiting Pittsburgh.

3) A guy at bowling here in Florida complained to me tonight that its only 65 degrees outside; I had to laugh. Its October 26 and 65 is cold? I love this place.....

2) The World Series got rained out, so that puts up the possibility of Carpenter starting Game 7 for the Cardinals, if they can somehow win Game 6. I'm still annoyed that the whole communication fiasco happened in Game 5. This is 2011, we're all smarter than that.

1) It snowed in Denver Wednesday morning, meaning the Broncos had to practice in the snow, and weather could be a factor in Detroit's visit to the Mile High City Sunday. Guess Tim Tebow didn't get to work on his passing mechanics too much then.

Thursday's games

Underdogs covered six of last seven Virginia-Miami games; Miami is 4-3 in last seven series games, but only one of four wins was by more than 10 points. Cavaliers lost two of last three visits here, losing 52-17 in last visit here two years ago; this is their first road game in six weeks- they're 10-7 in last 17 games as road underdog, 0-1 this year- they've turned ball over 18 times in last six games (-7). Miami is 18-34 as home faves since 2002, 2-1 this year; they beat North Carolina/Ga Tech last two games, after tough 38-35 loss at Va Tech. Four of last five Virginia games stayed under; three of last four Miami games went over.

Houston is 6-3 in its last nine games against crosstown rival Rice, but only one of last four series wins was by more than 17 points; Owls lost last four visits here, by average score of 53-24. Underdogs covered five of last seven series games. Rice is 6-14 in last 20 games as road dog (1-3 this season), losing away games this year by 25-25-24-4 points, with a cover at Marshall. Houston is 7-0 and trying to run up scores in the rare chance they can get a BCS bowl bid; three of their last four wins are by 35+ points, but they've struggled at La Tech (35-34), UTEP (49-42), so they're lot better at home. Double digit favorites are 4-7 in C-USA play.

Heading out tonight to watch the Series and wishing everyone a great night.
Obviously a huge bet on the series with the Rangers so gotta sit back and watch the game tonight although
I feel Lewis gets it done for us tonight. In college not going crazy with the series happening.

Friday's Dirty Dozen: Random thoughts with the weekend here....

12) Anyone who doesn't think Texas should've walked Pujols with first base open, two out and an 8-7 lead is a second-guessing nitwit. If they had not walked him there, Nolan Ryan might've gone into the dugout and tore Ron Washington's larynx out. It was the obvious thing to do, but the right move doesn't always work out.

11) That was one of the most exciting baseball games I've ever seen. Not the most well-played, but for sheer drama and importance, it was one of the best.

10) Sean Payton announced he will coach from the press box in St Louis Sunday; hey, he could coach from the blackjack table on the riverboat in the Mississippi River by the Gateway Arch, and Saints still win by 20.

9) Colts/Titans lost last week by a combined total of 103-14. Someone is going to be relieved to win Sunday; the loser will be truly miserable.

8) Lot of pressure on the Baltimore offense this week; they've won four games by 15+ points, but the offense has sputtered. Time for Flacco to step up his game, especially on shorter passes.

7) Eagles won their last 12 post-bye games; Patriots won last eight. Both teams have tough games this week. We'll see if the streaks survive.

6) Beware any underdog that lost their previous game while allowing less than 10 points; its a theory I read over 30 years ago, and it still carries a surprising amount of juice. In other words, a trap game for the Bengals in Seattle Sunday.

5) Navy has beaten Notre Dame three of the last four years; Illinois won three of last four meetings with Penn State. Both are underdogs Saturday.

4) Georgia has a better team that Florida this year, but Gators are 18-3 in last 21 series games, and they haven't always had the better team. Huge game for the Mark Richt era in Athens.

3) How will Wisconsin play at Ohio State after losing on a Hail Mary on the play in East Lansing last week? Tough loss to bounce back from.

2) Underdogs are 11-3 vs spread in last 14 Clemson-Georgia Tech games, 5-0 in games played in Atlanta. Tigers are breaking trends all over so far this season; this would be another big one to break.

1) First NFL rematch of the year is Chargers at Chiefs Halloween night at Arrowhead. Jacksonville snapped a long losing streak by home dogs on Monday night last week; can the Chiefs make it two upsets in a row?
