Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Michigan State 78, Kentucky 74-- Young Wildcats were 20-36 from foul line, which cost them this game- they won't lose too many more.

-- Wildcats have 21 alums on NBA rosters, most of any college.

-- Kansas 94, Duke 83-- Jayhawks were 27-35 on foul line, starters shot 61% from floor. Thaank God the flopping era appears to be over.

-- VCU 59, Virginia 56-- You think VCU honchos look at Brad Stevens coaching the Celtics and worry about losing Shaka Smart to the NBA?

-- Cincinnati 68, NC State 57-- Solid win for the new AAC. Wolfpack shot only 33%; tough to open with this high quality a true road game.

-- Xavier 67, Tennessee 63-- Musketeers were up 9 with 1:38 left, hung on for dear life. Dismal day for the SEC East- Vols-Gators-Kentucky lost.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.....

13) November 12, 1949: Maryland played Boston U in football at Fenway Park. A rookie radio announcer did his first broadcast that day, a guy named Vin Scully. Wonder whatever happened to him? 19-freakin’-49, and he still works baseball games on TV. By himself.

12) Arena Football has an illegal defense rule that basically outlaws safeties from double-teaming receivers; what it eliminates, in effect, are a second DB clocking the WR and creates mostly all single coverage on WRs.

I can see NFL going to something like that, where the linebacker/safety has to stay in a certain box in the middle of the field until ball is snapped, , behind line of scrimmage. Hopefully not, but you get the feeling football is going to be changing a lot over the next few years.

11) Former major league shortstop Jay Bell is the new bench coach in Cincinnati, where he’ll help new manager Brian Price, who was the Reds’ pitching coach until now.

10) DirecTV really needs to add the Pac-12 Network. They have the Big 10 Network, why not just add another station and get rid of some of the goofy stations I never watch, like three soccer channels or one of the tennis stations? How many home shopping stations do I need?

9) MVP of the Knicks is obviously Tyson Chandler, toughest guy they have. Spurs made 17 layups in their 31-point win Sunday, with Chandler out injured. TV people can call Carmelo Anthony a superstar all they want, but he’s only a superstar when the ball is in his hands.

There are two ends of the floor; Chandler plays fierce defense, which is why teams he plays for usually win.

8) 11 NFL teams have already lost their starting QB for at least one game; four of those 11 also lost their #2 QB. Three of the four started three different QBs in three weeks. Hard to win that way.

7) 13 of the top 30 NBA prospects played in the doubleheader at the United Center Tuesday night. That’s 13 out of 30 on only four teams.

6) Miami Dolphins have played 729 games in franchise history; Monday night they had only two yards on 14 carries, the worst rushing output in franchise history. Against an 0-8 team.

5) When people hear Dick Vitale doing college basketball games on TV, he sounds like a cartoon character, with his over-the-top enthusiasm, but not only was Vitale once a terrific coach, he has been a Hall of Fame warrior in the fight against cancer, raising over $100M. Wish I had his energy.

4) Chiefs are 9-0 and an underdog in Denver Sunday night, first time since at least 1990 that an undefeated team with 9+ wins has been an underdog. Dwayne Bowe’s DUI/weed arrest ain’t helping the Chiefs’ cause any.

3) Jose Fernandez won Rookie of the Year; why? Marlins were 18-10 when he started, 44-90 in all other games.

2) 36-year old OF Marlon Byrd made $700,000 but drove in 88 runs this year for Mets/Pirates, which inspired the Phillies to give him $16M for two years. What a country- he was a scrap heap guy this time lasst year. .

1) UMass beat LSU by a hoop, now has wins over an ACC (Boston College) and SEC team. Good start for them and the Atlantic 13. These games count just as much as any others on Selection Sunday in March.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Wednesday, November 13

Georgetown lost 82-75 to Oregon in Korea Friday, putting Oregon on foul line 44 (36-44) times; Hoyas shot 59% inside arc but were 1-15 on arc. Hoyas have three starters back from LY's 25-7/14-4 team, but best two starters are gone. Wright State has four starters back from LY, when they wert 23-13- they lost by 10 at Cincinnati, their only Big East foe.

Kent State pulled upset 81-77 at Temple Monday after trailing by 8 at 7:53 mark; Flashes made 11-22 3's, turned ball over only seven times vs young Owls. Seton Hall won opener 83-72 over Niagara in foul fest that saw 102 FTs taken (52 by Hall, 50 for Niagara). Kent has three starters back from 21-14 team; Pirates have four starters back from 15-18 club.

Florida State forced 25 turnovers in 91-67 win over Jacksonville in its opener, but they had 20 turnovers, only 14 assists; FSU has 4 starters back from 18-16/9-9 team- they're picked to finish imid-pack in ACC. UCF lost 73-50 to Seminoles two years ago, in teams' only meeting in last five years; Knights have four starters back from 20-11/9-7 team.

Valparaiso beat Murray State 77-74 in its opener in foulfest; three of its starters played 21+ minutes. Crusaders lost all five starters from 26-8 team that won Horizon title LY and lost by 11 to Michigan State in 1st round of NCAAs. Illinois opens with wins by 17-22 points over stiffs; Illini has lost three starters from 23-13/8-10 team that began year 12-0.

Providence blew 67-60 lead with 0:55 left, lost 69-68 to their local rival Brown LY; Friars won previous four meetings by 31-27-16-24-19, so it was big upset LY. Friars beat BC in OT in opener- they trailed by 3 in OT, but made 30-36 from line despite playing two starters 40+ minutes. Brown has four starters back from LY- they won opener by 17, but is obviously moving way up in class, from Binghamton to Providence.

DePaul made 11-21 from arc, beat Grambling by 38 in opener; when you finish year before 2-18 in last 20 games, any win is good. Blue Demons brought in seven new players this year. Southern Miss was 30-44 from line in 67-51 win in opener; they've got three starters back from LY, but have new PG. Tyndall says this is deepest team he's ever coached.

Wyoming beat Colorado last two years; they shot 68% inside arc LY in 76-69 home win. Both teams beat UT-Martin over weekend, but Buffs also lost to Baylor in Dallas; Colorado has four starters back from 21-12 team that made NCAAs. Wyoming went 7-14 in last 21 games after its 13-0 start LY- they've got three starters back from that team.

Oregon State lost 78-73 at home to Coppin State Sunday, awful way to start season in which Robinson may be on hot seat; Beavers' Nelson did not turn ball over in 37 minutes, probably because he took 26 of their 59 shots, plus another 12 from line. Portland was 30-37 from line in 100-83 win over UC-Davis; Pilots have four starters back from LY's 11-21 club.

Cleveland State rallied back from down 15 at half to beat Iona 73-69 in opener; Vikings played three subs 24+ minutes, grabbed 22 offensive boards in what was a brickfest. San Francisco beat an NAIA team by 38 in its opener. Both teams have four starters back from LY, Dons are #4 pick in tough WCC; Cleveland State is picked #3 in weakened Horizon.

Pepperdine lost its top two scorers from LY's 12-18 team; they brought in two undersized PGs. Waves beat an NAIA team by 13 in the opener. Cal-Riverside shot 29.6% for game, 26% inside arc in 62-40 loss LY at Malibu; UCR lost its opener 77-41 at San Diego State, shooting 1-9 on arc, 8-23 from foul line. Riverside brought in JC kids to get better, but it takes them a while-- this game will be better indicator than San Diego St.

Buffalo fired Witherspoon because he never made NCAAs, brought in Bobby Hurley for his first HC job; Bulls beat Niagara last four years, by 10-8-18-6 points- they lost 82-58 in opener at Texas A&M, but it was only 8 with 10:00 left. Niagara lost opening foulfest at Seton Hall, when both sides took 50+ FTs. Eagles have 3 starters back from 19-14 club.

Marist scored just 51.5 ppg in losing first two games under new coach by 16-27 points; Red Foxes were 6-41 from arc in first two games for Bower, who has NBA experience. St Joe's won its opener at Vermont by 10; they better not be looking ahead to Saturday's game with Creighton, who beat Hawks by 29 LY. St Joe's has 3 starters back from 18-14 club.

Oregon is back from Korea after beating Georgetown by 7, great win in light of Artis' suspension (has 8 games left to serve); Ducks got to foul line 44 times, held Hoyas to 1-15 from arc. Western Carolina forced 18 turnovers in 74-67 win over NC-Asheville; they lost at Illinois by 8 LY, at Wichita State by 16, so they won't be intimidated here.

Scoring, foul calls way up in college basketball this season
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you've been betting on college hoops since the season officially started on Friday, you've noticed one thing above all others: the fouls.

After a push in the offseason from the NCAA to call fouls more tightly this year - with the goal of increasing scoring - officials have come out tweeting. And not the social media kind.

According to a report in the Associated Press, men's and women's hoops games are averaging 42 fouls per game so far. That's an increase of seven fouls per game from last year for men and 10 fouls per game from last year for women.

Scoring is also up by 12 points from an average of 134.28 per game last season to 146.29 per game this season according to Statsheet.com. The over/under is 37-29 heading into Wednesday's college hoops action for a win percentage of 56.1.

Sportsbooks aren't taking any chances and most have adjusted to the trends by releasing totals later than usual for college hoops - often just an hour or two before game time.

"The way they're calling the game, if you get to the basket with the ball there's a 90 percent chance there's going to be a foul called," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said Tuesday. "I think they're overreacting a little bit. Now, almost virtually any contact is a foul. I think it'll take awhile for everybody to get used to the rules and the calls — the referees as well as the players."

With a huge TV audience Tuesday in what may have been the biggest college hoops day in the first week of the season ever, here's a look at how a few games broke down:

Syracuse-Fordham: 55 fouls, 72 free throws
Kansas-Duke: 53 fouls, 63 free throws
UC Irvine-Pacific: 66 fouls, 77 free throws
South Carolina-Baylor: 55 fouls, 79 free throws

In all four of those games, the team that had the better free throw percentage covered the spread. In short, if you aren't looking at free throw percentage when betting college basketball right now, you aren't handicapping college basketball properly.

Realignment Overview

November 12, 2013

In all sports, whenever a team makes wholesale changes from the previous season, it's popular to note that someone "needs a game program" to figure out the new-look roster.

Well, college basketball as a whole now requires a "look at the game program" to figure out the myriad changes and conference shifts since last season. Which have been happening with more frequency in recent years, but nothing like we are witnessing for the 2013-14 campaign.

Following is a quick overview of the "new look" 2013-14 college hoops conference lineup, including brief analysis of which programs might benefit (or which might get hurt) by the new-look associations. We will also provide a quick glimpse ahead to already-announced moves for the 2014-15 season.

AMERICA EAST: Who's in...U-Mass Lowell (from Division II, transitional member). Who's out...Boston University (to Patriot).

AMERICAN ATHLETIC: As in football, the leftover (and non-Catholic) members of the old Big East have a new name this season, but the real difference is going to be felt in hoops, as the departing schools (save Notre Dame) all did not participate in FBS-level football. We've seen this league alignment already on the gridiron the past few months, but as a reminder, the remaining Big East entries have been joined by various entities from around the college sports map. Still, don't get too used to the first-year lineup, as changes are already in motion for 2014-15. Who's in...Central Florida, Houston, Memphis, SMU (all from Conference USA); Temple (from Atlantic Ten); Cincinnati, UConn, South Florida, Louisville, Rutgers (all from Big East). East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa all join from Conference USA in 2014. Who's out...Louisville (to ACC in 2014), Rutgers (to Big Ten in 2014). Who benefits? Probably the former C-USA entries, especially Memphis, which will get more exposure for its top-tier program. Who doesn't benefit? Long-term, this move figures to hurt UConn, because the Huskies (who have lived on NYC-area recruits for years) have much less exposure in the Big Apple these days, especially with the conference tourney (this year at least) in Memphis. Look for the "American" to get its conference tourney back into the New York area at some point in the future (perhaps the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, which currently has a deal to host the A-10 event, or maybe across the Hudson River in Newark's Pru Center, although that does not have nearly the hoops panache of Madison Square Garden, or even the new and gleaming Barclays Center).

ATLANTIC COAST: Who's in...Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse (all from Big East). Louisville (from American) arrives in 2014. Who's out...Maryland (to Big Ten) in 2014.

ATLANTIC 10: Who's in...George Mason (from Colonial); Davidson (SoCon) joins in 2014. Who's out...Butler & Xavier (both to Big East), Charlotte (to Conference USA); Temple (to American Athletic). Who benefits? Obvious step up for George Mason, which had become a big fish in the smaller Colonial pond and now joins former CAA defector VCU and also reignites some old state rivalries with the Rams and Richmond. Charlotte's move had more to do with its new football program that will soon have FBS status in C-USA. Who doesn't benefit? Butler was only in the league for one season, so its departure is not much of an event. Temple was a flagship program for the league, however, and its presence could be missed.

BIG EAST: Who's in...Butler and Xavier (both from Atlantic 10); Creighton (from Missouri Valley). Who's out...Cincinnati, UConn, Louisville, Rutgers, South Florida (all to American); Notre Dame, Syracuse, Pitt (all to ACC). Who benefits? All of the former Big East schools still aligned and not burdened any longer by the football-playing institutions. Who doesn't benefit? The Big East is a step up exposure-wise for Creighton, but being the farthest geographical outpost in a league is not always the most desirable. After developing a brand in the Midwest, will the Bluejays be as easy a sell to recruits in the Eastern Time Zone?

BIG SKY: Who's in...Idaho (from WAC) arrives in 2014.

BIG WEST: Who's out...Pacific (to West Coast).

COLONIAL: Who's in...College of Charleston (from SoCon). Who's out...George Mason (to Atlantic 10), Georgia State (to Sun Belt), Old Dominion (to Conference USA). Who doesn't benefit? The league as a whole, which has been stripped of what had been its three marquee programs (VCU, George Mason, and ODU) for the past decade. Georgia State and Old Dominion made moves elsewhere to accommodate their rather new football programs.

CONFERENCE USA: Who's in...Charlotte (from Atlantic 10); Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Middle Tennessee, North Texas (all from Sun Belt); Louisiana Tech, UTSA (both from WAC); Old Dominion (from Colonial). Western Kentucky (from Sun Belt) joins in 2014. Who's out...Central Florida, Houston, Memphis, SMU (all to American Athletic). East Carolina, Tulane, and Tulsa will all be moving to the American Athletic in 2014. Who benefits? Charlotte and Old Dominion now have a home for their football programs (brand new in the case of the 49ers) at the FBS level, which their former conferences didn't provide. All of the Sun Belt refugees have taken a step up (though perhaps not a big step) from their former league. When the smoke clears, the newly-configured C-USA will look a lot like the old Sun Belt.

GREAT WEST: Conference disbanded!

HORIZON: Who's in...Oakland (from Summit). Who's out...Loyola-Chicago (to Missouri Valley).

METRO-ATLANTIC: Who's in...Monmouth & Quinnipiac (both from Northeast). Who's out...Loyola-Maryland (to Patriot).

MISSOURI VALLEY: Who's in...Loyola-Chicago (from Horizon). Who's out...Creighton (to Big East). Who benefits? Loyola, at least in the longer term, with a bigger platform than it had in the Horizon. The Ramblers also allow the Valley to at least plant its flag in Chicagoland. Who doesn't benefit? Short-term, also Loyola, which was an also-ran in the weaker Horizon and figures to take its lumps (at least this year) in the Valley. Hoops-wise, for the time being, Creighton-for-Loyola is a significant net negative for the MVC, although the Ramblers have some long-ago hoops history (the 1963 NCAA Championship in particular) to add to the league. But trading the Bluejays for the Ramblers is going to hurt the league's RPI in the short run.

MOUNTAIN WEST: Who's in...San Jose State, Utah State (both from the WAC). Who benefits? Both the Spartans and Utags escape the burning building known as the WAC and ascend to a higher elevation. Who doesn't benefit? Although Utah State is an established basketball force, the league's RPI could take a big hit in the short term with the addition of San Jose, which was a bottom-feeder in the lesser WAC in recent years and is starting over with a new HC (Dave Wojcik) this season.

NORTHEAST: Who's out...Monmouth and Quinnipiac (both to Metro-Atlantic).

PATRIOT: Who's in...Boston University (from America East), Loyola-Maryland (from Metro-Atlantic).

SOUTHERN: Who's out...College of Charleston (to Colonial). Davidson (to Atlantic 10) in 2014. Who doesn't benefit? The SoCon will be without two of its flagship programs by next season when Davidson exits, a year after Charleston's move.

SOUTHLAND: Who's in...Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word (from Division II; ineligible for conference title); Houston Baptist (from Great West); New Orleans (from independent).

SUMMIT: Who's in...Denver (from WAC). Who's out...Missouri-Kansas City (from WAC), Oakland (to Horizon). Who benefits? Acquiring Denver in place of UMKC and Oakland is probably a net win for the league, as it adds a major metro market to the loop.

SUN BELT: Who's in...Georgia State (from Colonial), UT-Arlington and Texas State (both from WAC). Who's out...Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Middle Tennessee, North Texas (all to Conference USA). Western Kentucky moves to C-USA in 2014. Who benefits? Georgia State and Texas State now have longer-term homes for their newly-minted FBS football programs. There is also talk that UTA might revive its football program that has been dormant since the end of the 1985 season. The Movin' Mavs also allow the league to keep an entry in the Metroplex after Denton-based North Texas (on the northern fringe of the Dallas-Fort Worth area) moved to C-USA.

WAC: Who's in...Cal State Bakersfield (from Independent), Chicago State, Texas-Pan American, Utah Valley State (all from Great West); Missouri-Kansas City (from Summit); Grand Canyon (from Division II, ineligible for conference title). Who's out...Denver (to Summit); La Tech & UTSA (to Conference USA); San Jose State & Utah State (to Mountain West); Texas State, UT-Arlington (to Sun Belt). Idaho to Big Sky in 2012. Who benefits? The league is still alive and has an automatic qualifier spot in the Big Dance. New Mexico State, Idaho, and Seattle are the only holdovers from last season. Idaho moves its hoops to the Big Sky and football to the Sun Belt in 2014; NMSU moves its football to the Sun Belt in 2014. Who doesn't benefit? Wagerers, as the WAC teams will not be listed on any of the big boards at the sports books this season.

WEST COAST: Who's in...Pacific. Who benefits...Pacific, a better geographical fit in the WCC with its many Northern California entries. Long ago, UOP was a member of the WCC until 1971 when it moved to the old PCAA in a football-influenced switch in 1971, although the Tigers dropped their gridiron program after 1995.
