Preview: Predators (7-5) at Avalanche (12-1)

Date: November 06, 2013 9:30 PM EDT

The Colorado Avalanche have kept a lengthy win streak going while switching between the beleaguered Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere in net.

The Avalanche are expected to continue that trend with Varlamov drawing the start in their attempt at the best start in franchise history Wednesday night against the Nashville Predators.

Colorado coach Patrick Roy made a controversial move Friday by starting Varlamov two days after he was arrested for alleged domestic abuse. Allowed to travel with the team following one night in jail, the team's No. 1 goaltender stopped 27 shots in a 3-2 win in Dallas.

"I think I am the luckiest guy in the world because I play in the NHL and I play for this team," Varlamov said. "I've got such good teammates, so I don't think about what's happening."

After Giguere helped lead them to a 4-1 win over Montreal on Saturday, the Avalanche will turn to Varlamov again as they try to improve to 13-1-0 for the first time. In their final season before moving to Colorado, the Quebec Nordiques went 12-1-0 to begin 1994-95.

The Avalanche are also seeking their first seven-game win streak since an eight-game run Dec. 31, 2005-Jan. 17, 2006.

Roy said Varlamov will start Sunday against Washington, the finale of a four-game homestand, after Giguere plays Friday versus Calgary.

"There's been a lot going on with (Varlamov)," center Paul Stastny said. "Sometimes, the best thing is to just get in your comfort zone. ... When he's on the ice, when he's in net, he's focused on what he does."

Colorado is expected to get forward Jamie McGinn back in the lineup for its pursuit of a season-high fourth straight home win, but veteran Alex Tanguay is expected to miss at least two weeks with a knee injury. An ailing knee kept McGinn out of the past three games.

Colorado also seeks a fourth consecutive home win against Nashville (7-5-2) after posting a 3-1 victory Oct. 4. P.A. Parenteau scored two goals and Varlamov stopped 26 shots as the Avalanche won for the third time in four overall matchups.

Parenteau snapped a nine-game goal drought Saturday, and Nathan MacKinnon scored the tiebreaker with 11:59 remaining.

"We're 12-1, and everyone in this locker room feels like we're not satisfied," MacKinnon said. "That's the exciting part, that we can get better; 12-1 is great, but 13-1 is even better."

The Predators avoided a season-high third consecutive loss Saturday by bouncing back quickly from a blown two-goal lead for a 4-3 win in Los Angeles. David Legwand's second goal of the game with 3:56 left broke the tie.

"I think it says a lot about us, especially the way it worked out after blowing a two-goal lead," goaltender Carter Hutton said. "They had all the momentum, and the crowd was behind them, but we kept to our game. Getting one late was huge for us, making it 4-3 and holding on for the win."

With Pekka Rinne out due to a hip injury, Nashville's goaltenders have a combined seven games of experience - none against Colorado. Marek Mazanec, called up from the minors Tuesday, has never appeared in an NHL game.

Varlamov has allowed one goal in his last two games against Nashville. He outdueled Rinne in a 1-0 overtime victory in Denver on March 30.

Preview: Coyotes (10-3) at Ducks (12-3)

Date: November 06, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

The Anaheim Ducks are happy to be home after spending more than two weeks on the road, and they'll be pretty excited if they're able to get Teemu Selanne back ahead of schedule, too.

The 43-year-old hopes to be on the ice Wednesday night against the Phoenix Coyotes, who are seeking a sixth straight victory.

Anaheim (12-3-1) is coming off a season-high eight-game road trip that spanned 15 days, ending the trip 5-0-1 after dropping the first two. Corey Perry and Kyle Palmieri scored in the first period as the Ducks beat the New York Rangers 2-1 on Monday.

"Obviously we're tired, but if we were to take (Tuesday) off, you kind of just sit around all day and get lethargic, and it might carry over into (Wednesday's) game," defenseman Cam Fowler said. "It was important for us to get to the rink and just get out there for a half hour and get a sweat going. Now we can go home and get all the rest we need."

Selanne was hit in the mouth with a high stick in Anaheim's 3-2 win over Philadelphia on Oct. 29, and he was expected to have oral surgery and miss up to two weeks. The veteran, though, said he only lost fake teeth - deeming surgery unnecessary - and he hopes to be back in the lineup Wednesday after missing the last three contests.

"I'm feeling good now. I've been skating a couple days, and (Tuesday) was the third day already," Selanne said. "I'm anxious to get back. Just watching your teammates playing is no fun."

He'll surely receive a warm reception from the home crowd if he were to play, along with a Ducks team that has won each of its five home games. Coach Bruce Boudreau, though, said the players can't become too relaxed now that they've returned home.

"It doesn't stop," Boudreau said. "The next three games (at home) and then four more on the road is a really tough stretch."

Selanne scored in regulation and added another in the shootout as Anaheim beat Phoenix 3-2 on Oct. 18, its fourth victory in the last five home meetings with the Coyotes.

'If you look at all the teams that have a chance to win or be playoff teams, they all have a good home record,' Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said.

Phoenix (11-3-2), though, has won seven of eight since that contest and is riding a five-game winning streak after Tuesday's 3-2 shootout victory over Vancouver.

Shane Doan and Radim Vrbata had goals, and Mike Smith made 31 saves for the Coyotes, whose last three wins have come in shootouts.

'You get on a roll and you have confidence in a tight game,' Doan said. 'It makes a huge difference. It's a mental thing. The more confident we get, the better off we're going to be.'

With Smith starting the first of a back-to-back set, Thomas Greiss could get his third start in net Wednesday. Greiss is 2-1-0 with a 2.61 goals-against average in four appearances this season, and he's 0-2-1 with a 2.36 GAA in three career starts versus the Ducks.

Anaheim could counter with Jonas Hiller after Frederik Andersen made 32 saves Monday. Hiller is 5-0-1 with a 1.62 GAA in his last six against Phoenix.
