Cnotes Saturday's NHL Best Bets !

Saturday's betting tips: Trojans don't handle success well

Weather to watch

There’s a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms for Game 3 of the World Series in Arlington, Tex. It will be much warmer than it was in St. Louis. Temperatures will be in the mid-70s, with 7 mile-per-hour winds.

Who’s hot

MLB: The Rangers are 8-0 in Matt Harrison’s last eight starts as a home favorite.

NCAAF: The Illini are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games following an ATS loss.

NCAAF: Temple is 20-8 ATS in its last 28 road games.

NHL: The Lightning are 6-2 in their last eight home games.

CFL: Winnipeg is 8-3-1 in its last 12 home games.

Who’s not

MLB: The under is 1-8 in the Cardinals’ last nine road games.

NCAAF: The under is 5-15 in N.C. State’s last 20 ACC games.

NCAAF: The USC Trojans are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games following an ATS win.

NHL: The Oilers are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.

CFL: B.C. is 1-5 ATS in its last six meetings with Hamilton.

Key stat

318 – That’s the average weight of North Carolina’s starting offensive line, biggest in the ACC. Clemson’s defensive front is 10 pounds lighter per player. Running behind that line, UNC freshman Giovani Bernard averages 109.6 yards per game and 5.9 per carry. The Tar Heels are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings with the Tigers. Unbeaten Clemson, ranked No. 8, is a 10.5-point home favorite.

Injury not to be overlooked

Canadiens forward Scott Gomez left Thursday’s loss to Pittsburgh with an upper body injury. He got hurt on a first-period hit by the Penguins’ Deryk Engelland. Gomez tried to stay in the game but left after playing one more shift. His status for Saturday’s home game against Toronto was unclear.

Game of the day

St. Louis Cardinals at Texas Rangers (-180, 9.5)

Notable quotable

"I don't think anyone questions whether he's ready to go or can get it done. I know he's played well on a big stage for us, he's played against good opponents and done well. I think the locker room has a lot of confidence, and we know the coaches have a lot of confidence." – Seattle Seahawks WR Mike Williams on backup QB Charlie Whitehurst, who is likely to start Sunday at Cleveland. The Browns are favored by 3.

Notes and tips

No. 13 Michigan State, already shorthanded at defensive end due to Tyler Hoover’s rib injury, will also be without DE William Gholston when the Spartans host No. 4 Wisconsin. Gholston was suspended for punching a Michigan player last Saturday. The sophomore starter leads the Spartans with seven tackles for loss. He’ll be replaced by sophomore Denzel Drone. The powerful Badgers are favored by 7.5 points.

No. 10 Arkansas, a 16-point favorite at Ole Miss, has eight receivers with eight or more catches as QB Tyler Wilson continues to make opponents pay for double coverage on All-SEC WR Greg Childs. The Razorbacks also get a defensive boost this week when starting DT Robert Thomas returns from a leg injury. Playing in the shadows of SEC West rivals LSU and Alabama, Arkansas is 10-3 ATS in its last 13 games.

Veteran center Olin Kreutz’s sudden retirement from the NFL should boost the Saints’ running game. The 34-year-old, six-time Pro Bowler has been pushed around in the four games he’s played this season. His replacement, Brian De La Puente, is stronger and about 30 pounds heavier than Kreutz. New Orleans is a 14-point favorite Sunday night over visiting Indy, which has a terrible run defense.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens (-125, 5.5)

Perhaps a three-game homestand will help kickstart the Canadiens, who along with Winnipeg have the fewest points in the Eastern Conference (3). Toronto won’t make it easy, as the improved Maple Leafs try to rebound from a 6-2 loss to Boston Thursday.

Counting on Cammalleri

Forward Mike Cammalleri returned to action on Thursday for Montreal, but it didn’t make much of a difference. Cammalleri, who missed three games with a leg laceration, had just one shot in 22 shifts during a 3-1 road loss to the Penguins.

And his return only offset the loss of Scott Gomez, who left the game with an upper body injury after the first period. The disappointing forward had just four shifts and 2:40 of ice time.

Phil-ing it up for Toronto

The on-again, off-again relationship between the Toronto fans and forward Phil Kessel has to be on these days.

The All-Star, made famous last year for being the last pick in the ASG NHL Fantasy Draft, has seven goals and 12 points early on as the Maple Leafs take a 4-1-1 record into this Saturday night rivalry.

Kessel ran out of steam a bit versus Boston, his former team. A pointless night was his first in the last 16 regular-season games. But clearly he’s off to a great start and is a prime reason why the Leafs went five games before losing their first.

Subban’s sophomore slump

Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban is trying to shake a slow start and took a big step forward versus the Penguins. He took 27 shifts, had 26:10 of ice time, and finished with three shots and two blocks.

But it's been a struggle to say the least for the sophomore, who is a minus-5 with just one point through six games. And maybe Toronto's not the best opponent for him to see. On opening night, in a 2-0 loss to the Leafs, Subban was a minus-2. More of the same, perhaps, is in store.

History

Toronto and Montreal split six games last season, and the Canadiens went 2-1 at home. Six of the last seven meetings in this storied rivalry have gone under.

New York Rangers at Edmonton Oilers (110, 5)

The team without its home continues its road journey. The Rangers, still waiting to make their home debut in renovated Madison Square Garden, have played two games in Sweden, one on Long Island, and this will be the third of four in Canada before they get to touch the new ice in Manhattan next week.

Hank the Tank

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist has had plenty of work and it hasn’t affected him a bit. In wins this week at Vancouver and at Calgary, Lundqvist allowed just two goals and made 73 saves, including a 4-0 shutout of the Canucks on Tuesday.

Thursday’s 3-2 overtime victory over the Flames was Lundqvist’s 36th consecutive start. His last day on the bench for coach John Tortorella was Feb. 11, 2011.

Taylor time returns

Oilers forward Taylor Hall missed Tuesday’s 2-1 loss vs. Calgary because of flu-like symptoms, but returned Thursday and should be fine for Saturday.

Hall had one shot, 16 shifts and 14:21 minutes of ice time, as Edmonton dropped another heartbreaker, a 2-1 shootout loss to the Wild. Hall has a goal and three assists this season.

Strong start off Broadway

Losing to the rival Islanders, 4-2, last Saturday had to sting, but it’s hard to argue with the Rangers’ start. Eager to erase a disheartening loss to Washington in the first round of the playoffs last season, New York has at least a point in four of this year’s five games.

The team’s marquee addition, forward Brad Richards, has been as good as advertised. He has four assists already, 14 shots on net, and points in all five of his games in Rangers' blue.

History

If this is anything like last year’s contest, it should be entertaining. The Sunday matinee in New York last season was billed as “Kids Day," but perhaps should have been “Hide The Kids Day" as the Rangers trounced the Oilers, 8-2, in a game filled with cheap shots. Edmonton ended up with 81 minutes in penalties, while New York had 73. Five of Edmonton’s six games this year have gone under.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Boston Bruins (-145, 5)

The Bruins broke out of their slump with a 6-2 win Thursday over Toronto. The defending Stanley Cup Champs got two power-play goals, equaling their total for the previous six games.

Boston scored a measly 11 goals in its first six games. So while coach Claude Julien shook up his lines and got an immediate payoff, let’s not assume all the offensive problems are solved.

The Sharks arrive in Boston on a back-to-back, having played at New Jersey on Friday. Going into that game, San Jose had scored a total of four goals in losing three straight.

The under is 6-1 in Boston’s games this season. Three of the last four San Jose-Boston meetings have produced three or fewer goals.

Pick: Under

New York Islanders at Florida Panthers (-125, 5.5)

The Panthers are coming off two straight shutout losses.

“I don’t think we tried hard enough,” coach Kevin Dineen told the Miami Herald. “There are a lot of little things that go on during the course of a game. … That’s six periods in a row that we showed little snapshots here and there, but we’re a far way away from where we were four or five days ago. We need to address that and soon.

“We got outworked in our home building and that has some sting to it. It’s the first time for a lot of us who are new here. It’s got to stop right now.’’

Fortunately for Florida, up next are the Islanders, who fell 4-1 at Tampa Bay on Thursday. New York failed to get a shot on goal for nearly 13 minutes of the second period. For the game, the Islanders mustered 17 shots.

The Panthers have won eight of the last nine meetings at home, and 13 of 18 meetings overall.

Pick: Panthers
