SPOOKY'S REMEMBER MY NAME NFL EXPRESS

Spooky's NFL Dirty Dozen...........

32) Jaguars—They should trade Maurice Jones-Drew for draft picks; whats the use of having a bigtime runner if you’re never ahead? They need help, as in a lot of new players. Do what the Rams/Browns did; let the star RB go and eventually strengthen the rest of your team.

31) Giants—Tough times for Coach Coughlin, who had to bury his younger brother this week after he died in a freak accident.

30) Steelers—Ben Roethlisberger is a warrior; he hung in there Sunday and fought hard, not always well, but he took a lot of shots and competed until the end. Much like the Giants, Pitt’s OL is messed up and as a result, so is their season. Going to be a long flight to London.

29) Buccaneers—Their last two head coaches have both been guys who had never been NFL coordinators; could the next coach be Lovie Smith? He’d be a major upgrade over the last two. So they benched Josh Freeman for rookie Mike Glennon, who was the guy that replaced Russell Wilson at NC State when the coach cut Wilson loose before his senior season. Coach was fired within 18 months.

28) Redskins—They played a fun game Sunday (both teams had over 400 total yards) but fun doesn’t matter if your career rests on winning. At 0-3, they really, really need a win this week, at Oakland.

8) Cowboys—I’m thinking USC fired the wrong Kiffin last year.

7) Saints—Still amazing the league suspended Sean Payton for the same length of time as Greg Williams, when the whole bounty thing was Williams’ doing. Too bad Saints-Titans don’t play each other this season.

6) Chiefs—Can the NFL give Andy Reid Coach of the Year in September? How about Alex Smith being 3-0 while the 49ers are 1-2?

5) Dolphins—Ryan Tannehill was a WR at Texas A&M until he was a junior. His OC now is Mike Sherman, who was his coach at A&M and used to be coach of the Packers. They're off to a 3-0 start, but if my franchise QB was as inexperienced as Taneyhill, I'd get him a better QB guru than he has to help Sherman have a more productive offense.

4) Patriots—They’re going to keep coaching those young WRs; they’re going to keep getting better as the season goes on, just wait and see.

3) Bears—Defense is still forcing turnovers and Cutler’s play has improved under Trestman’s tutelage.

2) Seahawks—Interesting game this week at Houston.

1) Broncos—Without looking it up, who is:
a) the Broncos' backup QB and b) the offensive coordinator for Denver? If you say Peyton Manning is the OC, you get partial credit.Brock Osweiler is backup quarterback and Adam Gase is truly the offensive co-ordinator if that really mattered.

Spooky's Saturday Tidbits and random thoughts..........

-- Of the five NL playoff teams, only the Dodgers are in the top 10 in MLB payrolls; surprised to see the Braves with only the #19 payroll. They don’t get the credit they deserve for long-term excellence.

-- When the Manager of the Year results are released, they should also give out the names of anyone who didn’t vote for Clint Hurdle or Terry Francona, just so we know who the nitwits are.

-- Total in the Cal-Oregon game Saturday is 85; not sure if I’ve ever seen that many games have a higher total before. I mean, the game could end 42-41 and the under would still cash. Crazy, just plain crazy.

-- Former used car dealer Alan R. Selig is retiring as baseball commissioner after the 2014 season, when he will be 79 years old; any guesses on who replaces him? George W Bush? George Will? Cal Ripken? Tony Larussa (hey, he’s a lawyer)? One of those Ivy League wonderboys who keep getting GM jobs in their 30’s? Selig is making roughly $15M a year, so it should be a highly sought-after position.

-- New rule suggestion: Every year a major league team loses 100+ games, they have to lower ticket prices by 10%+ the following year; this would discourage teams tanking like the Astros and Marlins did this year. Marlins fired GM Larry Beinfast Friday, after 12 years with the team. Miami’s situation is especially hideous, since they just got a gorgeous new stadium built by the taxpayers. At least you can see that the Astros have a plan to win eventually. Houston is the 4th-biggest city in the country; they should have a prosperous franchise.

-- Florida Gators are -13 at Kentucky this week, with a backup QB making his first career road start. It’s the lowest series pointspread since 2007. Florida covered the last five series games. Can you say lay it.

-- Wall Street Journal had an interesting article that blamed declining student attendance at college football games on fact that college football stadiums have terrible cellphone signals, and in this day and age, phone-addicted kids can’t go three hours without texting or tweeting. Some schools are considering spending $2M or more to make their stadium’s WiFi system state-of-the-art.

-- Colorado Rockies gave retiring star Todd Helton a horse as a going-away present; I never would’ve thought of that.

-- Robinson Cano’s asking price this winter: $305M, 10 years. Alrighty then, guess that rules the A’s out. No harm in asking, but if he (or anyone else) gets a 10-year contract, I’ll be stunned. Those very long contracts have proven to be mostly a disaster for ballclubs.

The California/Oregon total is the highest on the CFB board since 1985 when Oklahoma State played Baylor to the tune of 88.5. The result stayed well under as the Bears edged the Cowboys 41-34. n fact, of the 11 games to boast a total of 80 points or more in the past 28 seasons, five have played over the number and six have stayed under. Over/unders in the 82-plus range – which there were five – saw the over hit just twice.

I'll be hard-pressed to see any team, even the Yankees take a shot at signing Cano to over $30M per season let alone any other team. He plays every day, puts up good numbers but none close to what Pujols was capable of in his heydays at St. Louis. The Steinbrenners have stood pat making it clear to Brian Cashman and company not to exceed the $189M payroll threshhold. That would mean every other active player would be charged $4.8M in salary just to play in 2014. I mean I love the game and all, but this IS a business and maybe 15-20 years ago where there was still some degree let of integrity before Bobby Bo started this all the sacrificial lambs might be calling out.

Sunday's Spooky Wrap up from Saturday......

-- Rangers and Indians won, Tampa Bay lost, so Rays/Texas are tied for the second Wild Card spot, a game behind Cleveland. I'm rooting hard for the 3-team playoff, just because baseball makes the All-Star Game result matter, so they deserve a mess as the playoffs begin.

-- NL Wild Card game will be Reds at Pirates Tuesday, first playoff game in the Steel City since 1992.

-- Georgia 44, LSU 41-- A football classic, with 670 passing yards between the two QBs, who are were roommates as freshmen.

-- Arizona State 62, USC 41-- In immortal words of former NBA player Micheal Ray Richardson,. "...the ship be sinking." ASU gained 612 yards, scored 42 second half points. Trojans traveled only 56 scholarship players and star WR Marqise Lee got hurt returning a punt when it was 48-21. I had no idea ASU has over 73,000 students; they're the biggest college in the country and Central Florida is second. Who knew? Say Goodbye to Lane Kiffen. Good riddance.

-- USC has 40 alumni on NFL rosters, most of any team, but LSU leads NFL with 11 alumni as defensive backs- think that helps recruiting? .

-- Hunter Pence gets $90M, five years from the Giants, giving agents all over America big smiles. If Pence gets $18M a year, what will Robinson Cano get? I don't think Cano will get more than five years, though.

-- Oklahoma 35, Notre Dame 21-- Irish were 9-25/104 passing with three INTs and were taken to the woodshed in the first 5:00 of this game, before making a game of it later on. Sooners had 212 rushing yards, 238 passing.

-- Alabama 25, Ole Miss 0-- Rebels had covered their last four visits to Tuscaloosa, but managed 205 only yards here, after some Ole Miss players said they thought they could score on the Alabama defense. Crimson Tide had 254 rushing yards and put the Rebels in their place.

-- Way out west very late Saturday nite, Fresno State led 42-3 at Hawai'i with 6:15 left in third quarter; Rainbow Warriors then scored 34 points in 13:24, pulling within 42-37 with 7:51 left in game, but Bulldogs hung on for the win, which would've been the worst collapse in college football history.
