SPOOKY'S COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEKEND EXPRESS

Spooky's weekend stuff to look forward to ....

13) Patriots are 2-0, with wins by a total of five points; Buccaneers are 0-2, losing twice in last minute by total of three points. Can Brady develop some chemistry with someone other than Edelman (6-21 on non-Edelman targets last week?

12) Its been ten years since Fresno State was favored over Boise State, in a series where the favorite covered the last 11 meetings. Hard to lay points to coach Peterson, who is 86-7 coaching Boise , and is 3-2 as an underdog.

11) Jacksonville is a 20-point underdog in Seattle; their HC Bradley was Seahawks’ DC the last few years. Seattle is in a major letdown spot after routing rival 49ers last week.

10) Texas Longhorns are -5 over Kansas State; will be a cold day in hell before I lay points with this Texas team, which is showing no life under Mack Brown, who is probably a lame duck, and not an Oregon Duck.

9) Carolina Panthers are 0-2, with two losses by total of six points, including a loss on last play in Buffalo last week; in come the 0-2 Giants, who’ve allowed 78 points in their first two games, but are dropping down in class here. Coach Coughlin’s younger brother died in a tragic accident earlier this week; our condolences to the family.

8) Utah State will have the best QB on the field when they visit USC Saturday; ever think you’d see the day Utah State was only a 6.5-point underdog in the LA Coliseum?

7) 0-2 Steelers are punchless on offense; they host 2-0 Chicago team playing its road opener, after winning pair of home tilts by total of four points. Chicago gave up a TD on both offense and special teams last week but still won- doesn’t happen much.

6) This could be the weekend the Pirates clinch their first playoff berth in 21 years; meanwhile, the Steelers are life-and-death to score a touchdown. The world has turned upside down in the Steel City.

5) Arizona State beat Wisconsin last week on one of the strangest endings ever; now they visit Stanford as a 7-point road dog in a conference game- who made that schedule?

4) 2-0 Dolphins opened season with couple of road wins; now they host 1-1 Atlanta, which has injury issues but is better than either team Miami has already beaten.

3) Wyoming scored 34 but lost at Nebraska; they need to go to Air Force and win. Cowboys lost six of their last seven meetings with the Falcons, but they're the better team this year. Want to go bowling? Win this game.

2) Why are the Raiders on Monday Night Football? Oakland gets 14.5 points in Denver, which hung 90 points on Ravens/Giants. Raiders are 18-3 against spread as a divisional road underdog, but other than that, this isn’t an appealing game for primetime.

1) BYU-Utah is a bitter rivalry made more so by Utes leaving Mountain West for Pac-12, while Cougars went independent. Game seemed more significant when it was played in November, but new conferences and their playoff games have pretty much killed what used to be Rivalry Saturday the week before Thanksgiving.

Trivial shit and things I'm looking for this weekend.......

-- Read this week that there are over 23 million homes in this country that receive food stamps; that’s just a staggering number. What amazes me even more is the people that just take advantage of the system. Medicade, welfare, food stamps, yet they own an IPhone, they own a house, they are physically able to work, they go out to dinner every week, but for some reason they feel the government should help support them cause it must be coming to them. What happened to working your butt off and setting a good example for your kids. If you do that and still need help by all means. But first let me tell you how I really feel?

-- Odd Fact of the Day: Mark Buehrle has two no-hitters in his underrated career (400+ starts, never on DL, won World Series in ‘05); same umpire was behind the plate for both no-hitters, Eric Cooper.

-- Imagine the panic in Alabama when news leaked out that someone from Texas talked to Nick Saban’s agent back in January about becoming the Longhorns’ football coach? Its hard to believe Saban would bolt Bama for another college job, but Texas has a lot of money, so who knows? At some point, Saban’s immense success with the Crimson Tide will build expectations up to a ridiculous level and he’ll leave, making it a very, very difficult job for whomever eventually replaces him.

-- Last time the Giants/Steelers both started 0-2? How about 1970. If I’m coaching the Steelers, I’m giving Roethlisberger the go-ahead to go no-huddle, fast break offense- it’s the best chance they have to win. How can you run the ball all the time without a decent OL?

-- Bronx Bombers are 81-73, but have been outscored this season, 646-630; hard to believe a team with a $200M payroll could get outscored over a six-month season, but its true. What about Hideki Kuroda? He will be 39 in February, and is 2-7, 4.84 against Orioles-Boston-Tampa; how do you bring him back next year and if you don’t bring him back, who replaces him that is better?

-- While the Dodgers clinched the NL West this week, news came out that their old owner, Frank McCourt, donated $100M to Georgetown, meaning that every Dodger fan now despises the Hoyas. I’ve asked this before; who has $100M lying around to give away?

-- Could someone explain to me how/why North Carolina and NC State are in different divisions of the ACC? According to Mapquest, Chapel Hill is 31 miles from Raleigh.

-- Giancarlo Stanton hit a homer this week off a hoagie stand in Philly that is on a walkway way beyond the left-center field fence, maybe 460-475 feet from home plate; ESPN showed the homer about six times that night, which immediately caused me to dread next summer’s Home Run Derby, when Stanton pulls an oblique hitting his 60th shot out of Target Field. How they haven’t picked him to be in the HR Derby to this point is beyond me.

-- You know this week’s college football card is awful when ESPN’s GameDay is in freakin’ North Dakota; I’m not kidding, they’re in Fargo at North Dakota State, which won the last two I-AA titles and beat Kansas State this season.

-- Player trades are unusual in the NFL, especially in Week 3 of the season, so when Browns traded last year’s 1st round draft pick Trent Richardson, lot of people in Cleveland got very upset, especially people who paid for season tickets this year, a season management has apparently already given up on, since it is assumed one of their #1 picks next year will go for a QB to replace Brandon Weeden. I’m not a Browns’ fan, but seems to me you have to wait and see- they just signed Willis McGahee to run the ball this year and they have seven picks in the first four rounds of the ’14 Draft- if they draft really well next spring, this could turn out to be a great move for them. Our society isn’t very patient anymore, that’s for sure, but that’s easy for me to say, since it isn’t the Lions involved.
