Cardinals At Rangers World Series Game 5 Preview

With the results of the fourth game of the 2011 World Series still pending, it's impossible to know exactly what will be at stake when the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers meet for Game 5 on Monday. But whether it's a close-out game for the Cardinals or the opportunity for them or the Rangers to take a 3-2 lead, it's easy to understand its importance.

St. Louis took a 2-1 lead into Sunday's Game 4 following a 16-7 explosion on Saturday. Albert Pujols tied postseason single-game records with three homers and six runs driven in. The offensive fireworks in Game 3 featured nearly triple the eight runs the two clubs combined to score in the first two games of the Series.

In addition to the burst by Pujols, three Texas errors and a blown call by 1B umpire Ron Kulpa also contributed heavily to the scoring in Game 3.

The offense figured to continue in Game 4 when St. Louis' Edwin Jackson and Texas lefty Derek Holland were opposing each other on the hill. Oddsmakers certainly were expecting it with a 10½-run total, the highest so far in this Fall Classic and befitting a couple of hurlers that have gone 6-0 to the 'over' in their combined postseason starts with more than 14 runs per game scoring in those outings.

Texas was favored to tie up the series in Game 4 with the MLB odds at -160.

Neither club had officially named its starting pitcher for Game 5 as of Sunday afternoon, but the initial mound battle is projected to be a rematch of Game 1 with Chris Carpenter going for St. Louis against Texas' CJ Wilson.

As big as Holland's start was for Texas in Game 4, Wilson's assignment on Monday will be even bigger. If the Rangers are going to survive or take a 3-2 lead back to St. Louis, Wilson will have to completely turn things around in what has been a very rough postseason with control issues really hounding the southpaw.

Texas has won just one of Wilson's four October outings, his ERA well up there at 7.17. He's walked 14 in just over 21 innings, nearly double his regular season walk rate. Six of those walks, plus a hit batter, came in Game 1's 3-2 loss last Wednesday with Texas +115 at the betting window.

Carpenter and the Redbirds were -125 for the game, the Cards' fourth consecutive postseason win behind their big righty. He only burned up 87 pitches in that start (6 IP, 2 ER).

Five previous starts at Rangers Ballpark, including Carpenter's days with the Blue Jays, have produced mixed results. His lone start here in a St. Louis jersey came in the only previous meeting between these two franchises during the 2004 season. Carpenter gave up 10 hits and seven runs, failing to make it through the sixth inning, but the only hitter left from that Rangers lineup is Michael Young.

Ted Barrett, an 18-year veteran working his 13th postseason series, will handle the plate for Game 5. He was 17-13-2 to the 'over' in the regular season, but has since worked an 'under' when he called the balls and strikes in Detroit's 3-2 win at New York in the decisive Game 5 of their ALDS.

Barrett's only other World Series plate action was Game 3 of the 2007 World Series, a 10-5 win for the Red Sox in Colorado against the Rockies.

Weather should not be a factor on Monday with clear skies and relatively little wind in Arlington. The thermometer should be around 80ºF at first pitch (8:05 p.m. ET).

If the Series does shift back to St. Louis, Game 6 will be Wednesday night at the same time. No pitchers have been posted, but it would likely be Colby Lewis for the Rangers against St. Louis southpaw Jaime Garcia.

Preview: Cardinals (90-72) at Rangers (96-66)

Game: 5
Venue: Busch Stadium
Date: October 24, 2011 8:05 PM EDT

Derek Holland's gem pulled the Texas Rangers even with the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.

It's been almost six weeks since they've seen a similar effort from C.J. Wilson, but they may need one with St. Louis sending Chris Carpenter to the mound.

In what may be his final start with the Rangers, Wilson will try to put an end to his postseason struggles and outpitch Carpenter in Game 5 on Monday night in Arlington.

Holland was terrific in a 4-0 win over St. Louis in Sunday's Game 4, coming two outs shy of a complete game while yielding two hits and striking out seven. One of the best postseason pitching performances in Rangers history, it evened the World Series at two games apiece after Albert Pujols had three homers and six RBIs in the Cardinal's 16-7 romp the previous night.

"That's why they say momentum is only as good as the next day's starting pitcher," said Lance Berkman, who had both of St. Louis' hits Sunday and is 7 for 15 in the series.

No matter who wins Game 5, the World Series will return to Busch Stadium for Game 6 on Wednesday night. This is just the second World Series in the last eight to go at least six games; the Yankees defeated Philadelphia in six in 2009.

Wilson hasn't won in the postseason since beating Tampa Bay in Game 2 of last year's division series. He's 0-5 with a 6.18 ERA in seven playoff starts since, including 0-3 with a 7.17 ERA in four this year.

The left-hander set a career high with 16 regular season wins, but hasn't won at all since topping Oakland on Sept. 11.

Wilson struggled again in last Wednesday's Game 1, allowing three runs while walking six and hitting a batter in 5 2-3 innings of a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals and Carpenter, who yielded two runs in six innings.

"Yes, he struggled in the postseason this year," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Wilson, "but we still feel that the next time he takes the ball is the time we'll see the C.J. that we know we have."

It may be the last time Texas sees Wilson in a Rangers uniform. He's headed for free agency this winter, and his performance Monday could weigh heavily on potential suitors.

"I haven't really thought about that at all," Wilson said. "I'm just thinking about the team and where we're at and being in the World Series obviously, like there's no extra series after this. There's no galaxy series or universe series or whatever.

"It's a chance for me to set some things straight for us as a team."

Unlike Wilson, Carpenter thrives in the postseason, going 8-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 13 career outings. The Cardinals have won all four of the right-hander's starts in the 2011 playoffs, and he's posted a 2.25 ERA while getting credit for the wins in the last three.

"Postseason is just at a different level," Carpenter said. "I think the guys that are successful maybe might be a little more relaxed and able to deal with the distractions that I am talking about a little better because there is a lot of them. But I don't think that it should define - if you scuffle in the postseason, it shouldn't define what type of player you are. That could just be that series."

Pujols would like to re-establish himself in this series. Following a remarkable five-hit performance in Game 3, he went 0 for 4 on Sunday.

"I got some good pitches to hit. I missed it. That's part of the game," said Pujols, who is batting .390 with five homers and 16 RBIs in the playoffs.

Fellow Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday is 2 for 15 in this series after hitting .375 in St. Louis' previous 10 postseason contests.

Catcher Mike Napoli came up big with the bat for Texas in Game 4, connecting for a three-run homer after promising the Rangers would regroup from Saturday's loss.

"It was behind me when I left the field," Napoli said of Game 3, during which his throwing error allowed two runs to score. "I didn't really think about it anymore. I knew we had to come here and get a win."

Napoli has two homers and seven RBIs in the World Series, including a two-run shot off Carpenter in Game 1.

Aces take the hill for Monday's Game 5

ST LOUIS CARDINALS

at TEXAS RANGERS

World Series Game 5 - Series tied 2-2
First pitch: Monday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Texas -120, St. Louis +110, Total: 8

The Rangers evened up the World Series behind a gem from a lefty on Sunday night, and they’re hoping for more of the same when ace C.J. Wilson takes the mound for Game 5 on Monday.

Fellow southpaw Derek Holland shut down the Cards in the 4-0 win in Game 4. But Wilson has simply not been good in the postseason. He’s 0-3 with a 7.17 ERA and 1.83 WHIP while the Rangers have lost three of his four playoff starts. On the other side, Cards starter Chris Carpenter has emerged as one of the most clutch pitchers of this postseason, including a strong outing in Game 1 of the World Series. St. Louis is 8-1 in Carpenter’s past nine starts including a perfect 4-0 mark this postseason. With Carpenter and the Cards paying off as an underdog, ST. LOUIS is the pick.

The FoxSheets provide another trend working in the Cards’ favor:

CARPENTER is 10-1 (90.9%, +10.4 Units) against the money line when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season this season. (Team's Record). The average score was CARPENTER 3.7, OPPONENT 2.5 - (Rating = 2*).

Carpenter (11-9, 3.45 ERA in the regular season) has come up with some huge starts in the playoffs. He threw a three-hit shutout in Philadelphia in a deciding NLDS Game 5 and pitched well in World Series Game 1, holding the Rangers to a Mike Napoli two-run homer over six innings. They were the only runs he’s allowed over 14 career World Series innings. The Cards have won Carpenter’s last five and nine of his past 11 road starts. They’re also 6-3 against American League teams with Carpenter on the mound, since 2009.

Control has been an issue of late for Wilson (16-7, 2.94 ERA in the regular season). He’s walked 14 in 21.1 postseason innings, including six over 5.2 innings in a Game 1 loss at St. Louis. He’s also been shakier at home all year, posting a 3.94 ERA in Arlington in the regular season and playoffs combined (as opposed to 2.65 on the road).

Holland threw a two-hit gem on Sunday, but the Cardinals bats are still hot overall. Three of their regulars have World Series OPS’s of better than 1.000—Albert Pujols (1.264), Lance Berkman (1.033) and Allen Craig (1.017).
