SPOOKY HAPPY NEW YEAR WEEKLY EXPRESS

Lets get this party started. Not much time with the opening of NFL this week so will be short and sweet.

Spooky's are you ready for some Football Thirsty Thursday Six Pack....

-- Five years ago, Clint Hurdle led the Rockies to the World Series; now he is leading the Pirates to their first playoff berth in 21 years. Let me think; someone who leads those teams to the playoffs is a damn good manager.

-- Serious question I wish someone would ask Rex Ryan: How long a leash does Geno Smith have in Sunday's game? Is there a chance Matt Simms would get the nod to come in off the bench?

-- Patriots’ first three games, they oppose these three QBs: EJ Manuel, Geno Smith, Josh Freeman; the first two make Freeman look like Dan Marino. New England plays at Atlanta/at Cincinnati in Weeks 4-5, but hard to believe they’re not jogging to another division title, with two of their three division rivals totally crippled at quarterback.

-- You have to check out You Tube or plays of the week for the fantastic catch Josh Donaldson made Tuesday night on a foul ball by the tarp in Oakland. He catches the ball and disappears between the trap and the stands, with only his glove showing, with the ball in it. Tremendous play.

-- I’m told that when you’re on jury duty, you have to turn in your cellphone while court is in session. Um, no thanks. When was last time I was awake for 3-4 hours straight without looking at my phone?

-- Georgia’s Malcolm Mitchell blew out his knee giving his teammate a leaping chest bump after a TD Saturday at Clemson; wonder how many HS/college coaches around the country have banned the leaping chest bump? Somewhere, former Arizona Cardinal kicker Bill Gramatica (who ruined NFL career by doing same thing) is nodding his head sadly.

-- L'shana Tova to the Spooky Express and BTB family and friends.

Happy New Year: Things the Spooky Express is looking for this weekend.........

-- NFL opened last night; there are 13 games Sunday, two on Monday. How will the rookie QBs (Manuel/Smith) do and Terrelle Pryor, who might as well be a rookie- how will he fare at Indy?

-- Georgia is -3 against South Carolina, after Dawgs laid an egg at Clemson, botching a tying 25-yard FG on a bad snap. Gamecocks smothered North Carolina in their opener, but this is the SEC opener and this is a big game

-- Florida-Miami will be a noontime steambath Saturday; Gators struggled to 24-6 win over Toledo Saturday. Miami is on the way back; this will be a good yardstick for them and we think Miami will win this game.

-- Will Jay Cutler play better after the Bears fired the generally-successful Lovie Smith to bring in a QB guru as head coach? Smith is only the 4th NFL coach since 1990 to get canned after winning 10+ games; Cutler’s play better improve a lot.

-- Sean Payton is back on the sideline after getting suspended LY for things one of his assistants did; expect the New Orleans offense to bounce back to its 2010-11 levels.

-- Mike Leach’s Coogs are better than they’ve been in while, but are they good enough to challenge a USC team that still hasn’t really decided on which QB it wants to play. Wazzu had a shot at beating Auburn last week—I’m looking forward to this game.

-- 73-year old Monte Kiffin is the new DC in Dallas, after his son fired him at USC. (Really, he did) Cowboys should be better on defense, but they’ve lost at home to the Giants four years in a row. As much as the networks put Dallas on in primetime, it would be nice if they played like they deserved the attention.

-- Detroit Lions open up at home against AP and the Vikings. Quite a few changes (hopefully for the better) for the Lions and this is a make or break year from Coach Schwartz and his staff. Hoping for Stafford, CJ and Bush to have a good season.

-- Packers lost twice to San Francisco LY, including a playoff game in Candlestick. Tough opener here; 49ers had some injuries in the offseason. Good 4:25 game for FOX.

Steambath here in SFLA for sure. Been brutal this week, although a bit of a breeze today which will help somewhat. It's a no play for me.
Am a believer in a big Peyton return to NOR.........hey, you gotta believe in somethin' right?

Never, ever criticize someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes........for at that point they will be a mile away. And you'll have their shoes !

Spooky Wrap Up from Saturday's College Football....

-- Washington State 10, USC 7 -- Lane Kiffen's time has come. The play calling has gotten worse than last year. Not only does he have a QB controversy, and it ain't good; his two QB's combined to go 11-21 for 54 yards passing in this dismal performance, including a pick-6 near the end of the first half that gave Wazzu its only TD. Thats right, Mike Leach won straight up as a 15-point road dog in a game where his offense didn't score a TD. Alrighty then. FIRE KIFFEN

-- BYU 40, Texas 21-- What in the name of Robbie Bosco is going on here? BYU completed only 9-27 passes, but ran the ball for an school-record 550 yards-- let me repeat that, TEXAS GAVE UP 550 RUSHING YARDS TO BYU. Mack Brown becomes the early favorite to replace Lee Corso on the GameDay program if Mr Corso decides to retire after this season. BYU QB Hill ran for 259 yards on 17 carries, 2nd-most by any D-I QB in the last ten years. Oy.
By the way, if you go to a BYU game, bring an umbrella; they've had lengthy weather delays in each of their first two games.

-- Miami 21, Florida 16-- Gators recruited Jeff Driskel instead of Teddy Bridgewater; whoops. Florida outgained Miami 413-212, but turned the ball over five times, three times in the red zone. Miami will be in the top 25 this week for the first time in three years.

-- Georgia 41, South Carolina 30-- Dawgs beat Carolina for first time in four years, as two SC assistant coaches got into a brief scuffle on the sideline, during the game. They're both defensive coaches-- the Gamecock defense had a very bad day, allowing 229 rushing yards, 309 passing.

-- Tennessee 52, Western Kentucky 20-- Hilltoppers turned ball over five times in a six-play span in the first quarter, which might amuse me if I hadn't picked them on this site. WKU trailed 31-3 before they punted, which has to be some kind of a record. They got within 31-17, then threw two more picks in Tennessee's end zone. Don't win a lot with seven turnovers.

-- Michigan 41, Notre Dame 30-- Highlight of this game was Eminem's appearance in the ABC booth during the second half; it raised awkward to a whole new level. NCIS star Mark Harmon was there too; Michigan honored his late dad Tom, who won the 1940 Heisman Trophy.

-- Oregon 59, Virginia 10-- Memo to Virginia coaches; Ducks went for two points after their first TD in their last two games LY; put your defense on the field and anticipate a fake. No one blocks extra points anyway. Might also be good advice for Mike Shanahan Monday night; curious to see if the Eagles try any fake PATs with Chip Kelly their new coach.
