Sunday Night Baseball: Mets at Nationals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Washington Nationals

NIESE HAS BEEN NICE FOR THE METS

Jon Niese is 6-6 with a 3.69 ERA for New York this season. Since coming off the disabled list, he is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four starts. The southpaw has found his strikeout groove; he has fanned five or more batters in six straight starts, including a pair of nine strikeout games against the Braves and Padres. He has not lost a road start in his last four outings. Niese has not seen the Nationals since August 18 of last year when he beat them after giving up only five hits in 7 1/3 innings of work. His other start against Washington in 2012 also came on the road; that was a no-decision despite giving up just one run and three hits in seven innings.

UH OH OHLENDORF

Ross Ohlendorf is 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA and 1.08 WHIP for the Nationals. Ohlendorf has been on the disabled list already this season, and his fastball velocity dropped 10 mph in his last outing on Tuesday. The righty is making his fifth start of the season for Washington. As a starter, he has given up one earned run in three of those games. Ohlendorf faced the Mets back on July 26 and gave up one run and six hits in seven innings, striking out eight while walking only two. Ohlendorf also saw New York during a brief relief appearance on June 28 and he gave up 1 run and three hits in just two innings.

INJURY REPORT

The Nationals have a short injury list with only three players out. Taylor Jordan is dealing with a lower back strain, but he was expected to be shut down soon anyway due to an innings limit. Ross Detwiler has a lower back strain as well and he has no timetable for a return. Christian Garcia is out with a right forearm injury.

The Mets' injury list is longer featuring several important players. Matt Harvey is done for the season with a partially torn UCL, while David Wright is dealing with a hamstring strain. Johan Santana has been out for the whole season with a shoulder injury. Bobby Parnell, Jenrry Mejia, Jeremy Hefner, and Lucas Duda are also dealing with various ailments.

TRENDS

Mets are 2-6 in Niese’s last 8 Sunday starts
Mets are 5-0 Over in their last 5 Sunday games

Nationals are 4-0 in Ohlendorf’s last 4 starts
Nationals are 7-3 Over in their last 10 Sunday games

Preview: White Sox (56-79) at Yankees (72-64)
Game: 1
Venue: Yankee Stadium
Date: September 02, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

The New York Yankees can't afford to turn in a series against the Chicago White Sox like they did last month if they want to remain in contention for the playoffs.

Phil Hughes surprisingly may give them a chance to get off to a good start in this one even though he is winless in nine outings.

Hughes owns a lower ERA against the White Sox than versus any other AL foe as the Yankees open a three-game home set Monday.

New York (72-64) was swept at Chicago from Aug. 5-7 even though the lowly White Sox entered that series on a 10-game slide. Alex Rodriguez notably made his season debut in that set.

Hughes (4-13, 4.91 ERA) is 0-6 with a 5.84 ERA in his last nine starts, and failed to last five innings for the fourth time in six outings when he gave up five runs over 4 2-3 in last Monday's 5-2 loss at Toronto. That start came after there were positive signs in consecutive six-inning stints.

"I left a lot of sliders over the middle of the plate," Hughes said. "It didn't really seem like it had the bite that it did in the last couple (of starts)."

The right-hander was originally scheduled to start Sunday against Baltimore, but was pushed back by manager Joe Girardi.

That may pay dividends since Hughes owns a 1.38 ERA against the White Sox (56-79), and is 3-1 with a 1.32 ERA in six starts versus them.

He has fared well against Chicago regulars such as Gordon Beckham (1 for 13), Alexei Ramirez (1 for 11), Adam Dunn (1 for 9) and Paul Konerko (3 for 14).

The Yankees trail Tampa Bay by 3 1/2 games for the AL's second wild card after blowing a three-run lead in Sunday's 7-3 defeat. New York captured the first two games of the weekend set to move ahead of the Orioles, who promptly moved one-half game back in front of the Yankees.

"You talk about winning series, but when you win the first two and you're up 3-0, you get greedy," Girardi told the Yankees' official website. "And that's the hard part."

Rodriguez went 0 for 3 with a walk after sitting out one game with flu-like symptoms. Robinson Cano was 0 for 5 after going 4 for 7 with four RBIs in the first two games of the series.

The Yankees scored three times in four innings off Wei-Yin Chen - the first of four straight left-handers they will face.

Next up is Chicago's Jose Quintana (7-4, 3.66), who gave up one run over 6 2-3 innings to earn an 8-1 win over New York on Aug. 5. He has won both career starts against the Yankees.

Quintana is 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA in five 2013 starts against AL East opponents, and is 3-0 with a 3.68 ERA in 13 road outings this year. The White Sox have won his last three starts overall.

Chicago starters posted a 10.80 ERA as the club was swept over the weekend at Boston. The White Sox entered that series as winners of 10 of 12.

Preview: Mets (62-73) at Braves (83-53)
Game: 1
Venue: Turner Field
Date: September 02, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

After an all-around off night ended their winning streak, the Atlanta Braves hope to regroup behind a pitcher who has been stellar at Turner Field.

Paul Maholm hasn't been too shabby when facing the rival New York Mets, either.

The left-hander looks to continue both those strong runs Monday in the opener of a three-game series.

After totaling 20 runs during its six-game winning streak, Atlanta came up empty in a 7-0 loss to Miami on Sunday. Justin Upton went 1 for 4 after missing two starts with a left hand contusion, while NL batting-leader Chris Johnson is expected to return to the lineup after being limited to pinch-hitting duty due to minor leg soreness.

The Braves (83-53), who lead the NL East by 14 games, rank last in the majors with 34 runs since Aug. 18. They've made up for those struggles, however, by posting baseball's third-lowest ERA (2.87) over that span.

Atlanta might not need much scoring with Maholm (9-10, 4.37 ERA) taking the mound against the Mets (62-73).

After allowing five runs over 5 1-3 innings in a 6-2 loss at St. Louis on Aug. 22 in his first start in more than a month due to a left wrist contusion, Maholm limited Cleveland to one run over six innings before Atlanta pushed across a run in the ninth for a 3-2 victory at Turner Field on Wednesday.

Maholm hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of his eight home starts, going 5-2 with a 1.88 ERA.

"My goal for the whole month of September is to get back to (the playoffs) and for them to have confidence in me going forward," Maholm told the team's official website.

He's also had New York's number of late, going 3-1 with an 0.64 ERA while holding them to a .196 batting average in his last four starts. He was a tough-luck loser in the last outing, however, giving up two runs in seven innings of a 6-1 defeat June 18.

Daniel Murphy is 1 for 3 against Maholm this season and 8 for 15 with three RBIs lifetime. The second baseman has also gone 12 for 21 with five doubles in his last five games overall.

Although the Mets have averaged 7.5 runs while hitting .333 in their last four games, they had their three-game winning streak snapped in Sunday's 6-5 loss at Washington.

New York's bullpen failed to hold a 5-2 lead in the seventh inning, and its relievers could become a factor again in this contest if Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2, 8.68) is unable to turn things around.

The veteran right-hander has allowed nine runs and 12 hits in two starts since signing with the Mets on Aug. 22. He gave up four runs and six hits over 4 1-3 frames in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to Philadelphia.

"I will tell you - his stuff's good enough," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "When he commands it, he's going to get outs, because it's good enough."

Matsuzaka is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two career starts against the Braves, but hasn't faced them since 2009 while with Boston.

He might have his hands full with Freddie Freeman, who is hitting .357 with four homers and 11 RBIs in his last 15 games versus the Mets. Dan Uggla is batting .375 with five homers and 10 RBIs in his last 19 against them.

Preview: Cardinals (79-57) at Reds (76-61)
Game: 1
Venue: Great American Ball Park
Date: September 02, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

The Cincinnati Reds missed a prime opportunity to pick up ground on the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central race last week at Busch Stadium, but they at least were able to avoid a sweep as Adam Wainwright labored through his worst start of the season.

Cincinnati sends Mat Latos to the mound to oppose Wainwright as the clubs begin a crucial four-game series Monday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds (76-61) hold the league's second wild-card spot while trailing St. Louis (79-57) and Pittsburgh by 3 1/2 games in the Central. They lost two of three to the Cardinals from Monday through Wednesday, then dropped two of three at Colorado with Sunday's 7-4 defeat.

Shin-Soo Choo went 3 for 5 with a two-run homer and Chris Heisey finished 4 for 4 for Cincinnati, which has dropped six of eight.

"Every game from here on out is huge, especially games against the Cardinals," Heisey said. "We just have to show up and play the ball we can. We got them at home this time. I think we're a little more comfortable playing at our home ballpark, and hopefully we can play well against them."

Cincinnati lost 10 of the first 14 meetings with St. Louis - with Latos starting three of the four victories - but its offense battered Wainwright on Wednesday in a 10-0 victory to salvage the series finale.

Wainwright (15-8, 2.96 ERA) allowed four hits and a walk to the first five batters as the Reds scored nine runs in his two innings on the hill. He allowed two runs over seven frames in each of his first two outings against Cincinnati this season, losing 2-1 on April 29 before earning a 9-2 win June 7.

"You just have to throw it away," Wainwright said of his last start. "You'd like to say there's something to learn in every game. I'm going to forget about it and go back to pitching."

The right-hander, who had allowed two runs while striking out 20 over 16 innings to win his previous two starts, will be looking to become the NL's first 16-game winner, though the Reds are countering with their top pitcher.

Latos (13-5, 3.03) went 3-1 with a 0.89 ERA while allowing three runs in 30 1-3 innings over his previous four starts before giving up four runs in six-plus frames of Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the Cardinals.

Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday each singled to start the bottom of the first as St. Louis reached Latos for two runs early. The right-hander had gone 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in his previous three starts against the Cardinals this season.

"Latos did his thing," manager Dusty Baker said. "He threw the ball well. He got out of the first inning with minimum damage. He even helped himself at the plate (with two hits). He had as good at_bats as anybody."

He'll face a Cardinals team that struggled at the plate before Sunday's 7-2 win over Pittsburgh that tied the Pirates atop the division. Holliday and David Freese drove in two runs each for St. Louis, which had scored one run during a three-game skid prior to the victory.

"For us to come back out in a day game after scoring one run the first two nights (of the series) was really big,' Freese said. "It finally gave us a little momentum.'

The Cardinals have won five of their last seven at Cincinnati.

Preview: Tigers (80-57) at Red Sox (82-56)
Game: 1
Venue: Fenway Park
Date: September 02, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

The most productive offenses in baseball have lifted the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers to the AL's top records.

The availability of the majors' best hitter for a showdown between the clubs remains uncertain.

A banged-up Miguel Cabrera has sat out the last two days heading into Monday's opener of a three-game set at Fenway Park, where his Tigers have been awful over the past decade.

An abdominal strain kept Cabrera sidelined over the weekend after it caused him to leave games early Thursday and Friday. The injury bothered him throughout August - he's also battled hip and leg problems - and manager Jim Leyland said he's unsure when Cabrera will return.

"According to the medical people, that thing can heal while playing," said Leyland, whose club was 8-1 without the reigning AL Triple Crown winner until falling 4-0 to Cleveland on Sunday.

Cabrera has hit .418 with five homers and 18 RBIs in his last 13 games against Boston, going 8 for 15 as Detroit took three of four June 20-23 in the teams' first series.

Both clubs' division leads have since increased. The Red Sox (82-56) are atop the East with the AL's best record, having won seven of eight, and the Tigers (80-57) lead the Central by 7 1/2 games.

Detroit's 699 runs scored are one more than Boston, and no other team is within 40. Led by Cabrera's major league-best .358 average, the Tigers are batting .286 to lead the majors and Boston is next at .274.

Detroit heads into a nine-game trip with an AL-best 19-8 road record since July 2, but is 9-30 at Fenway since the start of 2003, losing 11 of 12 series there.

The Tigers will face a pitcher who has excelled at Fenway in John Lackey (8-11, 3.19). The right-hander is 5-2 with a 2.24 ERA in 10 home starts, though he's been pitching well nearly everywhere despite a 1-5 record in eight outings since the All-Star break.

Lackey received no run support in half of those games. He's provided quality starts in three straight and five of six, and he's pitched into the seventh inning in 14 consecutive starts.

"I would like to have more wins than I have right now, but that's not the goal," Lackey told the team's official website. "The goal is for the team to win games."

He threw seven innings of two-run ball at Detroit on June 20, but Boston's bullpen blew a late lead in the 4-3 loss. He's 6-2 with a 3.87 ERA against the Tigers.

Counterpart Doug Fister (11-7, 3.81) has not done as well against his opponent. He's pitched a combined 8 1-3 innings in losing his last two starts to the Red Sox, surrendering six runs and 11 hits in each.

The right-hander was similarly shelled Wednesday, allowing season highs of seven runs and 13 hits in a 14-4 loss to Oakland. Fister was 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA in his previous eight outings.

"Fister today was just a little up, not as sharp with the sinker as he has been pretty much the last few months," catcher Alex Avila told the Tigers' official website. "... It was kind of like a hiccup. Get it over with and move on."

Shane Victorino was 3 for 3 with a homer off Fister in Boston's 10-6 win June 21, but his status is unclear after leaving Sunday with a bruised hip.

Detroit center fielder Austin Jackson may miss a second straight game with a shoulder injury.

Victor Martinez has been hot for the Tigers, hitting .531 over his past eight games, and he's 10 for 24 (.417) off Lackey.

David Ortiz is 5 for 9 with six RBIs following an 0-for-23 drought, moving within two hits of 2,000, and he's batted .442 in his last 11 games against Detroit.

Preview: Mariners (62-74) at Royals (70-66)
Game: 1
Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
Date: September 02, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

The Kansas City Royals have managed to stay in the wild-card conversation thanks in part to Danny Duffy, who has come up big since debuting last month.

The same can't be said for Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, who has struggled to find his form of late.

Duffy takes the mound opposite Hernandez as the Royals and Mariners meet for the first time Monday at Kauffman Stadium.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, Duffy (2-0, 1.10 ERA) has impressed since getting called up for the first time Aug. 7. The 24-year-old left-hander has struck out 17 in 16 1-3 innings and limited opponents to a .203 average.

"They told me when I first had surgery it's going to take some time to get your feel back for everything, and that's exactly what happened," Duffy, who lasted 3 2-3 innings in his first start before winning his last two, told MLB's official website. "I'm lucky to have it come back as fast as it has."

Duffy carries a 12 2-3 scoreless innings streak into the opener of this four-game set after scattering five hits in 6 2-3 innings in Wednesday's 8-1 victory at Minnesota.

"Sometimes he gets too excited on the mound, so I just tell him to keep down a little bit," catcher Salvador Perez said of Duffy, who has never faced the Mariners. "I tell him to work both sides of the plate and that's what he did. That's why he was so good."

Duffy will look to deliver another strong showing for the Royals (70-66), who are 5 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot.

"We're still pushing for it," said outfielder Jarrod Dyson, who has stolen a major league-leading 13 bases since Aug. 11. "We're not going to let up. We're going to give it all we've got."

Kansas City has won six of eight after concluding a 4-2 road trip with Sunday's 5-0 victory over Toronto. James Shields threw seven strong innings and Eric Hosmer went 2 for 5 with three RBIs.

"We've got some room to catch up," Shields said. "We're fighting right now. Today was a big game."

The Royals now try to keep things going against Hernandez (12-8, 2.97), who is hoping to avoid losing a career worst-tying fourth consecutive start. The former Cy Young Award winner's only such stretch came April 27-May 13, 2008.

Hernandez has posted a 9.64 ERA during his skid, giving up nine runs - a career-worst eight earned - in three-plus innings Wednesday in a 12-4 loss to Texas.

"It was embarrassing, terrible," said Hernandez, whose ERA has increased by more than one-half run in his last three starts. "I was a little bit up. That was the problem. And everything that I threw, they hit and found holes. That's a whole lot of runs."

Hernandez has gone 4-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 10 starts in the series, allowing three earned runs or fewer in each of those outings. The right-hander has limited Billy Butler and Alex Gordon to a combined eight hits in 38 at_bats (.211) in their matchups.

Butler, mired in an 0-for-15 slump, hit .464 with two homers and seven RBIs in eight games against the Mariners last year. Seattle, though, won seven of those contests.

The Mariners (62-74) took three straight from Houston to open an eight-game trek before falling 2-0 in Sunday's finale. Seattle was limited to four singles in dropping to 3-7 in its last 10 games.

Preview: Pirates (79-57) at Brewers (59-77)
Game: 1
Venue: Miller Park
Date: September 02, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

Charlie Morton finally ended his woes against the Milwaukee Brewers last week by outdueling Tom Gorzelanny, but Milwaukee has made a change to its rotation to avoid a repeat of that scenario.

Tyler Thornburg will instead start Monday, looking to give the NL Central-leading Pittsburgh Pirates more trouble in the opener of a three-game set at Miller Park.

Milwaukee (59-77) won two of three last week at Pittsburgh (79-57). The lone defeat came when Morton (6-3, 3.14 ERA) allowed one unearned run over 6 2-3 innings in a 7-1 victory Wednesday.

Morton had been 0-4 with a 6.25 ERA over his first seven starts against the Brewers.

"I think it's something people like to talk about because there's been some consistency in that regard but really what the team is doing really well is not thinking about yesterday or two weeks ago, it's the game today," Morton said. "If it's the Brewers, it's the Brewers, so be it. This is a different year anyway."

The right-hander improved to 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA in his last five starts.

He won't have to face Gorzelanny, who yielded four runs over 5 1-3 innings to cap a three-start stretch in which he surrendered 16 runs over 13 2-3 innings.

That convinced Milwaukee that Gorzelanny won't get a chance to compete for a rotation spot in 2014, and plan to use him exclusively out of the bullpen.

Manager Ron Roenicke instead is turning to Thornburg (1-0, 1.94), who has yielded two hits over 5 2-3 scoreless innings of relief against the Pirates this year. Thornburg will make his first start versus Pittsburgh.

The right-hander, who turns 25 later this month, has posted a 0.50 ERA in three starts this year, failing to receive a decision in any of them despite allowing only three runs - one earned - over 18 innings. Curiously, he went 0-9 with a 5.79 ERA in 15 starts for Triple-A Nashville.

"I try to tell people, relieving and starting are two such different things," Thornburg told the Brewers' official website. "They're both pitching, but they're completely different mindsets, different ways of pitching."

Pittsburgh starts a nine-game trip tied with St. Louis for the division lead. The Pirates won two of three at home against the Cardinals over the weekend, failing to seize a two-game edge in the Central with Sunday's 7-2 defeat.

Justin Morneau made his Pittsburgh debut Sunday, going 1 for 3 with a walk as he batted sixth in the lineup and played first base. The longtime Minnesota slugger was acquired Saturday.

"I'm excited by this opportunity, of doing something every day to help this team win, to do whatever it takes to get in the playoffs," he told the Pirates' official website.

Manager Clint Hurdle batted Neil Walker at leadoff Sunday for the first time. Walker went 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak at home to 12 games, and now will try to improve on a .213 road average that is one of baseball's worst marks.

The Brewers began this six-game homestand by being swept in a three-game set by the Angels. Carlos Gomez, hitting .371 against Pittsburgh, had a two-run homer in Sunday's 5-3 loss.
