Preview: Rays (75-61) at Angels (64-72)
Game: 2
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: September 03, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Rays' recent poor stretch has come at a rather inopportune time as they chase down a playoff spot.

They're hoping the return of one of their top pitchers can help turn things around.

Matt Moore takes the mound for the first time in over a month on Tuesday night when the Rays visit the Los Angeles Angels.

Tampa Bay (75-61) has lost eight of nine games after an 11-2 loss to the Angels in Monday's series opener that also reduced its lead over Baltimore for the second AL wild-card spot to two games. Los Angeles also took two of three in Tampa Bay last week.

The Rays have managed just 19 runs over their last nine games while batting .177 with runners in scoring position.

Evan Longoria is hitting .114 (4 for 35) over that stretch with 10 strikeouts while stranding 15 runners.

"It's frustrating. We're in a bad stretch and we've got to turn it around," Ben Zobrist said. "These things happen during the season at times, so you just have to fight through it and stay positive."

They'll hope to regroup behind Moore (14-3, 3.41 ERA), who starts for the first time since July 28 after the Rays put him on the disabled list as a precaution due to elbow soreness. Despite missing more than a month, the All-Star left-hander still leads the team in wins.

"I'm very eager to get back out there," he told the team's official website. "I think a month-plus is a lot longer than I initially thought it was going to be. So I'm just excited to get back out there and give us a shot to win the game."

Prior to leaving his last start against the New York Yankees after only five innings on July 28, Moore had racked up victories in six straight starts while limiting opponents to seven runs in 42 innings.

Moore was solid in three starts versus the Angels last season, going 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA. Mark Trumbo is the lone Angels hitter batting better than .250 against him, going 3 for 9.

Moore will run into an Angels (64-72) offense that has finally clicked during an underachieving season.

They recorded 16 hits in Monday's win and have scored 50 runs while winning nine of 10. They're 29 of 78 (.372) with runners in scoring position during that stretch, including an 8-for-17 performance on Monday.

Mike Trout was 2 for 4 Monday and scored two runs as he reached 20 homers and 30 steals for the second straight year. He also owns a .494 on-base percentage over his last 18 games.

``We talked after the All-Star break about being kind of a thorn in peoples' sides, and whether we win or lose make them feel like they've earned it,' Hamilton said. ``That's what we've done the last couple of weeks.'

Scheduled starter Jason Vargas (8-5, 3.54) tries to beat the Rays for the second time in six days after throwing seven innings of two-hit ball in a 2-0 win at Tampa Bay. He also struck out seven in his fourth start since returning from a blood clot in his arm.

"Can't ask much more from Jason," manager Mike Scioscia said after the lefty also matched a season high with 114 pitches.

Vargas is 3-1 with a 1.32 ERA in his last four starts against the Rays.

Preview: Rangers (79-58) at Athletics (79-58)
Game: 2
Venue: O.co Coliseum
Date: September 03, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

The Oakland Athletics waited until the last day of the season to win the AL West last year.

They're making their move earlier in 2013.

A day after pulling even with the visiting Texas Rangers, Oakland can move ahead of them for sole possession of first place on Tuesday night.

Coco Crisp's fifth-inning go-ahead home run - upheld by video review - was the difference maker in a 4-2 victory on Monday, Oakland's fourth in a row. Crisp's homer was his third in as many games and his career-high 17th of the year.

Crisp later left after fouling a ball off his shin but said he was fine afterward.

"It's a back and forth that kind of pumps your blood a little bit," Crisp said. "Obviously you want to be close or you want to be in front, in first place or as far in front as possible. We're fortunate we're in the situation we are now."

Oakland (79-58) spent much of the latter part of last season chasing Texas and only claimed the division crown on Oct. 3 with a 12-5 victory.

This season, Texas (79-58) had been in sole possession of first place since Aug. 10.

"I expect it to go all the way down to the end. Division champs over there," manager Ron Washington said after his club's third loss in its last 15 road games. "I don't expect them to go away and I certainly don't expect us to go away. Everything goes through Oakland. Doesn't matter where positioned in the standings right now."

The Rangers hope starter Martin Perez (8-3, 3.58 ERA) can extend his rookie club-record winning streak to six starts. His offense has played a big role in that stretch, supplying him with 40 runs of support in his last 35 1-3 innings, but he's also limited opponents to 12 runs over that span.

"He just goes out there and does what he does," Washington said. "That's throw the fastball down in the zone, change speeds and use his breaking ball and move it around."

Perez hasn't faced Oakland after going 1-2 in three starts last year. He won the first but then surrendered nine runs over 4 2-3 innings in the two losses.

Crisp is 2 for 6 off Perez with a double and two strikeouts.

Oakland will counter with Bartolo Colon (14-5, 2.94), who allowed one run over five innings of a 7-6 loss at Detroit on Thursday in his first start since Aug. 13. Colon had given up 10 runs over 6 2-3 innings in two starts before a stint on the disabled list due to a groin injury.

He is 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA in four starts against the Rangers since joining the Athletics in 2012.

Oakland may have to lean on a different pitcher in a potential save situation after Grant Balfour pitched for the fourth time in five days on Monday. Balfour, who allowed a hit and a walk before recording his 36th save, said he was running on fumes.

Lance Berkman was 0 for 4 for the Rangers in his first game since July 7 after being sidelined by left hip inflammation and a sore surgically repaired right knee. Washington told the team's official site he plans to start him Tuesday as well to see how he responds after the long layoff.

Adrian Beltre is batting .302 (19 for 63) with five homers and seven doubles lifetime versus Colon.

Preview: Giants (61-76) at Padres (61-76)
Game: 2
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: September 03, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants are likely headed toward losing seasons, but avoiding sole possession of the NL West basement may provide some motivation.

The Padres and Giants are looking to break the last-place tie Tuesday night at Petco Park.

It's highly unlikely San Francisco (61-76) will be defending its World Series crown next month, and San Diego (61-76) is all but assured of falling short of the playoffs for a seventh straight year.

They share last place in the division after the Padres took the opener of this three-game set 4-1 on Monday. San Diego won despite mustering four hits, but Ronny Cedeno and Chris Denorfia had two-out singles that produced a three-run second inning.

Going 2 for 4 with runners in scoring position was a welcome change for the Padres after they were 4 for 23 (.174) during a three-game sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend.

"That was big," manager Bud Black told the team's official website of Denorfia's two-run single. "There's the time to get the big hit that has been eluding us lately, the real big hit to stretch a lead or take a lead. That's a little bit of what happened to us up at Dodger Stadium: We couldn't get that big hit."

Madison Bumgarner (11-9, 2.91 ERA) may sympathize with the Padres, as he's hopes for some help from the Giants in order to win for the first time since Aug. 2.

The left-hander is 0-3 with a 3.99 ERA over his last five starts, and the bats haven't done him any favors by backing him with seven total runs. He got one run of support Wednesday, when he labored through 104 pitches in 5 1-3 innings while allowing four runs in a 5-4 loss at Colorado.

"I feel like I have been through a tough stretch," Bumgarner said. "We talk about things like this and there is always the feeling that thing would come around."

Perhaps a meeting with the Padres can get him untracked.

Bumgarner is 6-1 with a 3.06 ERA over his last 10 starts against San Diego. He's been significantly helped over his last five visits to Petco Park, going 3-1 with a 3.73 ERA while the lineup has averaged 5.7 runs of support.

He earned a 4-2 win in his latest visit July 11, yielding two runs in seven innings.

Brandon Belt is giving San Francisco some offensive punch, hitting .366 in 11 games after getting an RBI double on one of his two hits Monday. He has a .354 average in 14 meetings with San Diego this year.

The Padres are scheduled to turn to Robbie Erlin (2-2, 5.97), who is looking to build on his best performance of the season in his first meeting with the Giants.

The 22-year-old rookie left-hander yielded one run in six innings of Wednesday's 5-1 win at Arizona, hours after being recalled from Triple-A Tucson.

That was a major improvement from his two previous outings for San Diego in July, losing both while surrendering 12 runs with seven walks in 7 2-3 innings.

"It just comes down to executing," Erlin said. "Executing gets outs. I really just try to keep it simple, throw strikes."

That seems to be working at home, where Erlin is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

The New York Yankees aren’t making the playoffs, trailing the Boston Red Sox by nine games in the American League East entering the week. That doesn’t mean the Bronx Bombers are going to lay down the red carpet for the BoSox, though. New York has a four-game home set with Boston, starting Thursday, and would love nothing more than to throw a wrench into the Red Sox’s run.

But before that heated divisional rivalry, the Yankees welcome the lowly Chicago White Sox to Yankee Stadium for three games, kicking off Monday. New York has shown a tendency to look ahead to the Red Sox, losing all three games that preceded a series with Boston this season. The Yanks send struggling ace C.C. Sabathia to the mound in the series finale with Chicago Wednesday, giving the ChiSox some serious moneyline value.

Letdown spot

Auburn got a huge monkey of its back this weekend, taking down Washington State 31-24. The Tigers, who are coming off a 3-9 2012 record and working under new head coach Gus Malzahn, didn’t cover as 14-point favorites but were more than happy to get the “W” over the Cougars. The victory wasn’t pretty. Auburn struggled to pass and defend the pass, was whistled for careless penalties, and fumbled three times.

War Eagle is in a rare spot heading into Week 2’s date with Arkansas State, primed for a letdown after a win. The Red Wolves stretched their legs and boosted their confidence with a 62-11 thumping of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Week 1. They’ve ruled the roost in the Sun Belt the past two seasons and have shown that they can run with the BCS boys in past years. Oddsmakers aren’t taking ASU lightly, keeping the spread under two touchdowns at -13.

Schedule spot

Labor Day in Canada guarantees three things: 1. The alarm is off. 2. The beer is cold. 3. The Eskimos and Stampeders are butting heads. The CFL’s annual “Labor Day Classic” matchup pits Alberta’s two franchises against each other each September, with Edmonton coming to Calgary as a 7.5-point underdog Monday.

These teams turn around and do it all again Friday, with only three full days rest in between games. Calgary makes the trip north to Commonwealth Stadium in Week 11 and has dominated Round 2 of this provincial rematch in recent years. The Stamps and Eskies have split the last six Labor Day Classic games 3-3 ATS but Calgary is a perfect 6-0 versus Edmonton in the second stop of the home-and-home set.
