TUESDAY FIRST 5 INNINGS PLAY (YTD 37-22)

Milwaukee/Pittsburgh over 3.5 -120:
Pittsburgh (76-54) won four of its first five games in California before falling twice to San Francisco over the weekend. The Pirates managed three hits in a 4-0 loss Sunday. Their 3 game series with Milwaukee (57-73) would by most be called a tune-up, because they have second place St. Louis to look forward to at PNC Park over the upcoming weekend.

Pittsburgh will face Kyle Lohse (9-8, 3.22 ERA) to open its six-game homestand Tuesday. The right-hander has gone 4-1 with a 2.05 ERA in his last seven starts and earned a 6-3 win over his former club, St. Louis, last Tuesday. tonight Lohse faces a Pirates lineup that is only hitting .244 collectively while averaging just under 3.9 runs per contest. Andrew McCutchen (.321 17 73) is 4th in the NL in batting but isn't putting up the same productive numbers as in 2012 when he finished 3rd in the league in MVP voting on the support of his 31 HR and 94 RBI. Starling Marte (.282 11 33) has don a great job in the lead-off spot and has combined with McCutchen to notch 61 steals (74%). However Marte will need to cut down on his 127 K's in 483 plate appearances. The same could be said for Pedro Alvarez (.233 31 85) who has fanned 161 times in 446 AB's. Alvarez however does pose a threat in the 3 hole and clean-up spot tied with Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt for the NL lead in HR. Neil Walker (.252 8 37) has not produced anywhere near his average nor capability. The same could be said for Garrett Jones (.235 12 43) and Russell Martin (.244 11 47) who have also battled through injuries. Jones is hitting just .135 and went through an 0 for 19 slump this month. With word of Justin Morneau clearing waivers, the Pirates could very well be a candidate to pick up his services for the remainder of the season.

Pittsburgh counters with Jeff Locke (9-4 3.01) who has been struggling mightily over his last few outings. The southpaw is 0-2 with a 6.59 ERA over his past 6 starts and was not involved in his last decision. Lockee yielded 3 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings of a 10-5 win over San Francisco last Thursday. Locke faces a Milwaukee lineup hitting .255 collectively averaging just under 4 runs per contest. Their pitching has been fairly decent this season but the bullpen has been another story leading to their 4th place woes in the NL Central. Carlos Gomez (.282 18 55) who leads the Brewers with 30 SB's is showing no ill-effects of a sprained knee which caused him to miss 6 games earlier this month. Juan Francisco (.235 18 47) is tied with Gomez for the team lead in HR however both have struck out 119 times in 405 and 310 at bats respectively. Jonathan Lucroy (.285 17 66) has done a great job behind the plate and leads the Brew Crew in RBI. Jean Segura (.305 12 45) shows ample range at shortstop and is tops on the team in hitting. Injuries however and controversy surround Milwaukee highlighted by the 65 game suspension of Ryan Braun (.298 9 38) who has tested positive for PED's. Rickie Weeks' nightmare season came to an end undergoing successful hamstring surgery last week. Weeks hit just .209 with 10 HR and 24 RBI this season. It has also been a struggle for Yuniesky Betancourt (.211 13 43) and Aramis Ramirez (.256 7 31). Norichika Aoki (.282 7 31) has been resting due to patellar tendinitis in his right knee.

We get a little bit of an expensive price this evening at PNC, where the swirling wind off the Allegheny River allows well hit balls to carry even further than original sight off the bat. However the corners could be a bit tricky though balls it well in the left center field gap could easily go for 3 bases. Lohse has been pitching extremely well and will look to continue his good stuff against a team looking to end up atop the NL Central. Locke however after getting off to an 8-1 start is looking for a quality start in order to end his struggles. While both teams thrive on speed and small ball it only takes one or two mistakes to cause big innings. Always helps when both these teams have some pop in their lineup as well, and we look to hit our 4th straight which would give us a 16 game cushion above the mendoza line. Best of luck however you play!

A 2 run double by Aramis Ramirez in the top of the 5th cashes our 4th straight and improves us to a seasonal best 16 games over .500! Thanks all and congrats to all that followed! Back up later in the week.
