Spooky's Time to get your Contest General On Six Pack......

-- Tom Brady was once Michigan’s 6th-string QB; 6th string!!!! Now he’s married to a woman who made $44M modeling last year. 44 million dollars, and you thought Vernon Wells was overpaid.

-- Kentucky moving its Louisville football game to the end of the regular season shows how little chance they think they have of ever getting to the SEC title game.

-- If Bobby Petrino wins at Western Kentucky and he should, given his track record and fact that Willie Taggart left him a strong program, how long does he stay at WKU? What big-time football school is going to take a chance on him? Maryland as it goes into the Big Dozen Conference?

-- Speaking of the Terrapins, basketball player Dez Wells got booted from Xavier because a girl charged him with sexual abuse, a charge that turned out to be so bogus, the prosecutor who investigated called the school’s banishment of Wells unfair, so now Wells is suing Xavier to help restore his good name. From what you read, he might win, or at least Xavier will have to settle out of court and pay him off to go away.

-- Up until the late 70’s, NFL teams used to play six exhibition games. Six!!! Why? Two is enough; wouldn’t mind if the league went to an 18-game regular season, with two preseason tilts, the way the CFL does.

-- Still weird to think that John Elway never played in a college bowl game; he would’ve his senior year, but loss in the Stanford Band game knocked the Cardinal out of bowl consideration.

While Kentucky has been nothing short of dismal over the past few years and career wise is a shade under .500 in all of their consolidated seasons, it doesn't surprise me one bit to move a non-conference rivalry through to the end of the season. In 2008-09 they finished with 7-6 records each but perhaps better things are ahead after Mark Stoops signed the 4th highest ranked recruiting cast in program history, which the school hopes pays a dividend to a bowl appearance, which would be their first since 2010 when they lost 27-10 to Pittsburgh in the Compass Bowl.

5 weekends including the Hall of Fame game is way too much when it comes to the NFL preseason. Even if they cut the exhibition schedule by a game and then just went the full 17 weeks including the bye while playing the HOF game in Canton the same week. The anticipation gets closer and closer and wouldn't it be nice to start on the same weekend the colleges kick off?

Ok as everyone knows I am a huge fan of the Spooky Express and right in the heart of the middle of the summer Marc heats up in bases especially if you followed him in the past on facebook. However all he has to show for it is 70 plays? I know you're a busy guy Spooky but what have I been missing here? Granted you are still right around 60% which has become the norm in bases, and we all expect even a higher regular season that would lead into a major successful post-bowl season. In the past around this time you'd be right around 58-62% after 175-200 posted plays, which is unheard of and just about as good as my 35-22 (61%) record of my first 5 innings plays to date. Not trying to sound like Warner Wolf here, but GIMME A BREAK!!! If you love the Seattle Seahawks in week 4 of the preseason, take a few extra schennagins from your profits and post 2 or 3 of your best in bases and press em with some healthy units! We realize it's difficult to post them while you're on tour in Costa Rica signing autographs and meeting with all the famous celebrities, but when you're here you're family at BTB! This is Warner Wolf...Jim?

Spooky's Saturday Six-Pack as we head towards the College Football season.....

-- If you don’t think scouting/drafting is an inexact science, no matter how much money is spent on it, know that there were six QBs drafted ahead of Tom Brady in the 2000 Draft. Brady was the 199th player taken that year. One team didn’t draft him “….because his feet were too big.” Alrighty then.

-- Vin Scully is coming back for his 65th year in the Dodger broadcast booth next season, which is excellent news for anyone with the Extra Innings package. Scully started doing Dodger games when Harry S Truman was the President. He has seen an awful lot in his amazing career.

-- This is Pete Carroll’s fourth season coaching in Seattle; only four current Seahawks were on the team before Carroll took over. There is an interesting article on espn.com on how the Seahawks go about their business differently than just about any other pro sports team.

-- HBO’s Hard Knocks is very, very well done, an interesting look inside how an NFL team’s training camp is run. This year’s subject are the Cincinnati Bengals, who seem likeable enough.

-- That said, the harsh reality is that all 32 NFL teams will be down to 53 players on September 2. Training camp rosters are at 90, so like we’ve said before, 1,184 players have or will lose their jobs in the next ten days, that’s the harsh reality of professional sports. Hard Knocks shows some of these difficult conferences, when the coach tells a player he has been cut; there is no easy to do this, you’re telling someone he’s not good enough for your team. Yet the player is civil/professional, because he doesn’t want to burn bridges in case he could be brought back later on (like the A’s brought back Kurt Suzuki this week). Its just interesting to see how its done.

-- Back to Suzuki for a second: the A’s catching situation is messed up; John Jaso has had three concussions, Derek Norris broke his foot during the abysmal 8th inning vs Seattle Tuesday night and Steven Vogt just isn’t good enough to carry the catching load every day. Oakland didn’t have another catcher on its 40-man roster, so enter Suzuki, who the A’s traded to Washington last June; he is solid defensively and at this time of year, that is so important. A’s need better defense, or this September won’t be nearly as much fun as last September was.

Looking forward to your stuff this season, Spook. Thanks in advance.
Yup, I remember those 6 pre season (they called them exhibitions back then) games. Also remember listening to Vin Scully in my early days & his early days with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Gave my old transistor radio a real workout, especially late at nite with the covers pulled up over my head.
Had Seattle - the 2.5 last nite, but, uh oh, went with Indianapolis -2 tonite.
GL this season, man.

Never, ever criticize someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes........for at that point they will be a mile away. And you'll have their shoes !
