An Early Look at Greinke/Garcia

Good start, rough finish; I'm still eating Randy Wolf's crow. So we get back after it tonight with Game 5 of the NLCS at Busch Stadium with Zack Greinke hurling for the Miller's and Jaime Garcia throwing up for the Buds.

In 14 out of his final 17 regular season starts (dating back to July 3), Greinke didn't allow more than 2ER. In 13 of the 17, he struck out more than 6 batters. In 8 road starts he was 3-3(2ND) including a 7INN, 10K win at Cincy and a 7INN, 2ER, 2-0 loss at Busch Stadium. In his first two postseason starts, the former Cy Young winner has gotten absolutely pummeled: 11INN, 10ER, 4HR, 8.18ERA, 16H, .333BAA and both starts were both at home.

August was a terrible month for Garcia, who saw his ERA spike a half a point. The lefty gave up 18H and 10ER in his final 2 starts that month at Wrigley and at home against the Dodgers, both Cardinal losses. In September, he seemed to get his act straight, posting a 3-0 record in 4 consecutive starts against the Reds, Braves, Phillies and Mets. In those starts he went 26 2/3INN, 5ER, 19K:5BB. Then, in his last start of the regular season against Houston, the worst team in baseball, he had a poor outing with the season still on the line: 4INN, 4ER, ND, 5-4 loss. That didn't seem to carry over into game 3 of the NLDS against Cole Hamels and the Phillies. He went 7 strong and gave up 3 in a 3-2 loss; Hamels and the Phils' bullpen were better on that night. Garcia seemed to settle down in Game 1 against the Beers after giving up 2 in the first but came unraveled in the 5th as Milwaukee touched him for 4 more and ended his day.

So the question for this one, with neither bullpen backing down, will be which starter has the better stuff tonight. Garcia's home numbers this year: 15GS 9W 4L 2CG 2SHO 99.0INN 84H 28ER 6HR 26BB 76K 2.55ERA 1.11WHIP .230BAA Greinke's road numbers this year: 13GS 5W 6L 76.2INN 76H 40ER 9HR 23BB 82K 4.70ERA 1.29WHIP .255BAA Picks later.
