Preview: Phillies (39-43) at Dodgers (37-43)
Game: 4
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: June 30, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

While Yasiel Puig has gotten plenty of attention lately for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Hanley Ramirez has been hitting even better than the rookie phenom.

Ramirez will try to continue his tear and help the Dodgers win their series against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Puig has played a key part in Los Angeles' 7-1 stretch but has cooled off slightly after hitting .455 in his first 17 major league games. He's batting .333 over his last eight, including 3 for 11 in the first three games of this series.

Ramirez, meanwhile, is 20 for 40 with five homers and 14 RBIs in his past 12.

The shortstop went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer Saturday, helping the Dodgers (37-43) bounce back from a historic defeat. A 16-1 loss Friday to Philadelphia (39-43) was their most lopsided at home since moving from Brooklyn after the 1957 season.

Los Angeles nearly blew the win, with closer Kenley Jansen giving up the tying run in the ninth, but A.J. Ellis' single in the bottom of the inning sent home Ramirez with the winning run.

"He's one of the elite hitters in all of baseball," Ellis said. "He's also a phenomenal defender and that anchor at shortstop that we sorely missed."

Ramirez is batting .357 with five homers and nine RBIs in his last eight games against Philadelphia. He's 8 for 30 (.267) with three doubles and a home run all-time versus Phillies scheduled starter Kyle Kendrick (7-4, 3.46 ERA).

The Dodgers, though, have often hammered the right-hander. Kendrick is 3-4 with a 7.97 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles, losing the most recent one June 6, 2012, when he gave up five runs in 5 2-3 innings of a 6-5 defeat.

Kendrick, however, heads into this matchup 1-0 with a 1.72 ERA in his last two outings. He gave up two runs over eight innings Tuesday in a 6-2 win in San Diego, notching his first victory since June 3.

That's the same day Stephen Fife (2-2, 3.41) was recalled from the minors, and he'll try to provide another solid outing for Los Angeles on Sunday. The right-hander is 2-2 with a 2.73 ERA in five starts since returning to the majors.

Fife earned the win in Tuesday's 6-5 victory over San Francisco, giving up three runs over 6 2-3 innings. He allowed more than two runs for only the second time in 11 major league starts.

Fife did not get a decision in his major league debut and only matchup against Philadelphia on July 17 despite allowing one run over six innings.

He'll next face a team that's batting .335 in its last four games and hoping to see a rejuvenated Ryan Howard on Sunday.

Howard, 0 for 14 in his last three games, was given the past two days off because Los Angeles was starting a pair of left-handers.

"I know he can still be a productive hitter. When I say productive I mean like power and knocking in runs and things like that," manager Charlie Manuel told the team's website. "He's sitting there with 40 RBIs. If we just run a streak where he could get hot he could pull right up in the there. I think the talent is still there. I think the power is still there."

Howard, though, is a career .199 hitter against the Dodgers, his worst showing against any NL club. He went 0 for 1 with two walks against Fife in July.

Philadelphia is looking to avoid losing a series at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2008.

Preview: Yankees (42-38) at Orioles (46-36)
Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Date: June 30, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles have won seven straight starts by Chris Tillman.

Adding Brian Roberts back to their lineup can only enhance their chances of making it eight in a row.

Tillman will be on the mound and Roberts will play for the first time since the season's first week when the Orioles try for their first three-game sweep of the New York Yankees in over eight years Sunday night at home.

Tillman (9-2, 3.72 ERA) improved to 6-0 with a 3.98 ERA over his last seven outings as he allowed three runs over seven innings in Tuesday's 6-3 victory over Cleveland to capture his fifth straight start. He's bidding to become the first Oriole to win six games in a month since Rodrigo Lopez in July 2002.

The right-hander has matched his career-high win total from last season. He hasn't faced the Yankees this year, and is 2-3 in seven starts against them with an 8.16 ERA - his second-worst against any AL opponent.

Robinson Cano is 8 for 16 against Tillman while Ichiro Suzuki is 1 for 10.

Tillman and the Orioles will be boosted by the return of Roberts, out since April 4 with an injured hamstring. Roberts went 3 for 13 in a rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk that ended Friday.

Baltimore (46-36) will seek its first three-game sweep of New York (42-38) since April 15-17, 2005. The reeling Yankees will try to avoid their second five-game slide.

"They're a tough opponent and we get a chance to see them a bunch during the season, but we have a chance to go for the sweep,' Orioles slugger Chris Davis said. "It would be huge for us."

Davis continued his season-long success versus New York with two homers and five RBIs in Saturday's 11-3 rout. He's the first in the majors to reach 30 homers and is 11 for 28 with four home runs against the Yankees in 2013.

Davis' 30 homers are the most in franchise history by the end of June.

"We made two mistakes with two curveballs tonight," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We left them up in the zone and he hit them both out. He's not hitting 1.000, but I will say he is having a tremendous year. You have to make your pitches."

Cano is 5 for 9 in this series, but he's gone 11 straight games without an extra-base hit. The Yankees have lost 12 of 17 and are now closer to last place in the AL East than to the second-place Orioles.

"You just have to keep fighting,' Cano said. "Hopefully, sooner or later, we'll turn it around and start winning games so we can get closer."

The Yankees are 6 for 26 with runners in scoring position in this series and have lost four straight games at Camden Yards for the first time in the park's 22-year history.

New York has totaled 16 runs over its last six games and starter Hiroki Kuroda (7-5, 2.77) could feel some pressure to keep Baltimore off the scoreboard Sunday due to those offensive woes.

Davis is 4 for 12 with a homer against Kuroda, Adam Jones is 5 for 12 and Nick Markakis 5 for 13. Roberts has never faced the right-hander, who is limiting hitters to a .227 average although New York has dropped his last four road outings.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Updated odds to win the NBA championship next spring........

2-1 Miami Heat-- Going for the three-peat.

11-2 Oklahoma City Thunder-- Need Westbrook to get healthy.

10-1 Los Angeles Clippers-- I hear they got a new coach.

10-1 New Jersey Nets-- To paraphrase George Allen, the future is now.

11-1 Chicago Bulls-- Hopefully Derrick Rose will decide to play.

11-1 San Antonio Spurs-- All five Finals appearances? Odd # years.

*****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

13) Max Scherzer has made 16 starts for Detroit this season; in those 16 games, Miguel Cabrera is hitting .500, with 8 HRs, 21 RBI. He has 158 RBI in his last 162 games.

12) Think about that, then realize Hack Wilson knocked in 190 runs in a 155-game season; that record might never get broken, if it wasn't broken during the steroids era.

11) San Diego Padres are stretching out Andrew Cashner's starts, as a way to limit his innings; teams generally don't like a pitcher to throw more than 20% more innings than his previous high-- Cashner threw 69 innings LY, has already tossed 86 this year, but because he's a starting pitcher for the first time, he'll go over the 20% mark.

Look for the Padres to shut him down in September, if they fall out of the NL West race. He's a good pitcher with a bright future.

10) We noted yesterday that Shelby Miller threw 51 pitches in an inning he never finished Friday, the most pitches in any one inning by a pitcher this season. Wade Davis of the Royals broke that record Saturday, throwing 53 in the first inning at Minnesota.

He threw 16 more pitches in the second inning, didn't get anyone out, and was sent to an early shower. Rough day.

9) Adam Jones has gone 168 plate appearances without a walk, which isn't good; the record (at least since 1974) is Mariano Duncan, who once went 325 plate appearances without a walk; again, not good.

8) Toronto's Jose Bautista has 140 homers the last four years; he had 61 homers in 6+ seasons before that.

7) When I hear someone say "....to be honest with you," I always wonder how many times that person hasn't been honest with me.

6) Pro golfer Jessica Korda fired her caddy during a round Saturday and replaced him with her boyfriend; this is the US Open, not the best time to be having fights with your caddy on the course.

5) Feel bad for the football players at Arkansas State, who will have their fourth head coach in four seasons this year, and thats not counting the interim coaches from their bowl games. Doesn't make for a great experience.

4) Former Oregon Ducks/NBA guard Luke Jackson, who is only 31, is the new basketball coach at Northwest Christian, an NAIA school in Oregon; he got the job when he met the old coach in the grocery store, and was asked if he'd like to be considered for the job. .

3) Why are the Clippers so anxious to trade Eric Bledsoe?

2) NBA is the one league that is more interesting in the off-season than during the season. Free agency is starting up in a couple days already.

1) Good to see former Southern Miss point guard Dwayne Davis will be playing for Golden State's team in the Las Vegas summer league, so will be fun to see him play out there..

Sunday, June 30

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Yankees at Orioles
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles (-121, 8.5)

TILLMAN ON FIRE

Chris Tillman is 9-2 with a 3.72 ERA for the Orioles. He has won six of his last seven starts and he is 5-0 in the month of June. The righty has given up just 10 runs in those five starts this month with wins coming over the hard-hitting Tigers and Red Sox. Tillman has had a bit of a control issue in his last three starts; he has a negative 10/11 strikeout/walk ratio. He has not faced the Bronx Bombers since September 2nd when he allowed 2 runs and two hits in three innings in an 8-3 Baltimore win. Tillman hasn’t seen the Yankees at home since September 19th, 2010 when he gave up six walks in just over three innings.

KURODA KEEPS ON GOING

Hiroki Kuroda is 7-5 with a 2.77 ERA. He has held opposing hitters to a .200 batting average over his last three starts which came against the Dodgers, Rangers, and Athletics. He has not won a road start in his last four chances picking up two losses and two no-decisions. He pitched in Baltimore back on May 22nd and gave up 5 runs and eight hits in two innings. Kuroda has been able to pitch into the sixth inning in six straight starts.

INJURY REPORT

The Yankees continue to have numerous big names on their injury list. Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, Derek Jeter and Kevin Youkilis are all out as well as Michael Pineda and Francisco Cervelli. Pineda is on a rehab assignment and he could be back after the All-Star break. A-Rod is ready to start a rehab assignment with Jeter aiming to return in July as well. Granderson could be back next week after fracturing his pinkie finger.

Baltimore's injury list is short and about to get shorter with Brian Roberts most likely being activated on Sunday. Wei-Yin Chen is dealing with an oblique injury, while Wilson Betemit has a knee injury that may keep him out until the end of July.

TRENDS

Yankees are 0-4 in Kuroda’s last 4 road starts
Yankees are 34-15-2 Under in Kuroda’s last 51 starts

Orioles are 21-8 in Tillman’s last 29 starts
Orioles are 3-1-1 Over in their last 5 Sunday games
