Thoughts from this weekend sitting in the Punta Cana sportsbook: Before the games started 13) Someone explain to me why Jerry Sandusky isn't in prison. 12) Cool setting in San Diego for the outdoor game with Michigan State and North Carolina; game was sponsored by Quicken Loans, owned by the guy who owns the Cleveland Cavaliers and is a huge Michigan State alumnus. He tried to hire Tom Izzo to coach the Cavaliers in 2010. 11) Game was played on the USS Carl Vinson, a huge aircraft carrier with a flight deck of 4.5 acres. But who was Carl Vinson? He served fifty years as a Congressman from Georgia, and was a big supporter of the military. Guy lived until he was 98. 10) Fallout from NBA lockout: Mike Breen was broadcasting Duke game Friday on ESPNU, instead of an NBA game, like he usually would on a Friday night. Belmont is pretty good; we'll hear from them in March. On the flip side, Doris Burke's voice goes through me worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Got reacquainted with the mute button last night. 9) Duke has three brothers on their team, the Plumlees. Its first time since 1958 a Division I hoop team has three brothers (siblings) on it. 8) Love watching games at Cameron Indoor just to see the reactions of the visiting coaches as their team gets screwed relentlessly by the officials. Its kind of like the swallows returning to Capistrano every year. 7) Phillies gave Jonathan Papelbon $50M for four years, as Red Sox are further taken apart. Next thing I expect the Marlins to announce that they acquired the Green Monster to put in their new ballpark. 6) There is good news somewhere!!!!! Nationals' catcher Wilson Ramos was rescued in the Venezuelan mountains and is apparently OK after he was kidnapped during the week. Pro ballplayers are targets of evil down there, because they have so much more money than everyone else. 5) Eldrick Woods was leading after two rounds of the Australian Open (it is summer there), but Saturday wasn't so good; Australian John Senden shot a 63, Woods ballooned to a 75, and he trails by six strokes after the third round of play. He may never win again. Seriously. 4) Pretty cool tripleheader at Mohegan Sun Friday. Three D-I college basketball games, all involving teams from the Nutmeg State. Yale beat Central Connecticut, Fairfield beat Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart beat the Hartford Hawks. 3) Duke hung on for dear life against Belmont, winning 77-76 over a very good Bruin squad. Belmont was a 13-seed LY; this score has to improve their seed by at least one slot, assuming their regular season is similar to what they did LY, when they dominated the Atlantic Sun. Belmont made only 6-19 from the arc, and still lost by a point. Good team. 2) Loyola Marymount went to the LA Sports Arena and handed it to UCLA, beating Bruins 69-58. Shocking score, really surprising. LMU has a fine coach in Max Good, but this wasn't close in the second half. Won't be long before Larry Brown is declaring interest in the UCLA job. First time LMU beat UCLA since 1941. 19-freakin'-41. 1) Friday was 11-11-11. Happens once in a lifetime. I'm trying real hard to believe that our world is not going crazy, but there is evidence to the contrary.

Western Michigan at Toledo (-11), 8 p.m., ESPNU Toledo faces a major letdown situation when Western Michigan visits the Glass Bowl for Senior Night. The Rockets (5-4, 5-4 ATS) lost a back-and-forth 63-60 home game to Northern Illinois last Tuesday, an emotional defeat that delivered a major blow to their MAC title hopes. The Broncos (5-4, 5-4 ATS) arrive off of a bye week and haven’t played since Oct. 29. Toledo won at Western Michigan, 37-24, last September, despite being outgained 416-268. The Line Toledo opened as a 10-point favorite Sunday at the Las Vegas Wynn. By Monday, the Rockets were giving 11 with even a few 11.5s available offshore. The underdog has covered the spread in the last five meetings, with the road team covering four straight. Quarterbacks Sophomore Terrance Owens and junior Austin Dantin have split snaps throughout the year, but Dantin played the vast majority of the game against Northern Illinois. He completed 20 of 33 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns. Dantin had 173 yards with two touchdowns and an interception last year against Western Michigan. Senior Alex Carder has put up huge numbers for the Broncos, throwing for 2,274 yards already, with 18 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. He threw for 403 yards and four interceptions against Toledo last year. Weather Temperatures are expected to drop into the low 40s, with light winds and only a slim chance of precipitation. Injury Report Toledo starting safety Charles Rancifer was suspended for the Northern Illinois game. Coach Tim Beckman had not said publicly if Rancifer would be back against Western Michigan. Western Michigan is not reporting any significant injuries. Trends Over is 20-6-1 in Toledo’s last 27 games as a home favorite and 19-7 overall as a favorite. WMU is 10-21-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. Toledo is 40-23 ATS at the Glass Bowl since 2000. Northern Illinois (-6) at Bowling Green, 8 p.m. The Huskies cannot afford to come out flat against an up-and-down Bowling Green team that is expecting to get its leading rusher back and had an extra week to stew over an ugly 27-15 loss at Kent State on Oct. 29. The Falcons will need to improve their shoddy run defense (91st, allowing 190.78 yards per game) if they want to hang with the Huskies, who are averaging 246.78 rushing yards, ninth most in the nation. On the bright side, Northern Illinois’ rushing defense is worse, surrendering 202 yards per game. Northern Illinois hasn’t won in Bowling Green since 1986. The two teams have not met since 2008, a 16-13 Northern Illinois home win. The Line Northern Illinois opened as a 7-point favorite Sunday at the Las Vegas Wynn. But the line had dropped to -5.5 at a lot of books by Monday afternoon. The Falcons are 10-22 ATS in their last 32 home games and just 2-5 ATS as a home dog under coach Dave Clawson. Quarterbacks Northern Illinois boast the best QB in the conference in senior Chandler Harnish (1,962 passing yards, 18 TDs, 4 INTs). Harnish also leads the Huskies in rushing. Sophomore Matt Schilz threw for 400 yards against Kent State. He has 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, but has been sacked 20 times. Injury Report Bowling Green is expected to get leading rusher Anthon Samuel back. The freshman, who has five 100-yard rushing games, missed the loss to Kent State with a concussion. Cornerback Jeffrey Garrett, a starter before suffering a hamstring injury in early October, could return, but is considered a game-time decision. Weather Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-50s with a 13 mph South wind and the possibility of late thunder storms moving in during the second half. Trends Bowling Green is 11-4 ATS in its last 15 games in November. Under is 8-3 in Falcons’ last 11 games as underdogs. Over is 10-4 in Northern Illinois’ last 14 games overall. Huskies are on a 10-3-1 ATS run in MAC play.

There was plenty of movement in the latest USA Today college football coaches' poll released Sunday, but not at the top. While five ranked teams lost and another five escaped with narrow wins, LSU and Alabama were idle and remained in the top two slots, setting up their showdown next weekend. LSU received 41 first-place votes and 1,457 points while Alabama received 18 and 1,434. The SEC West rivals both are 8-0 and meet in Birmingham on Saturday night. Stanford remained third after escaping with a triple-overtime win over USC. Oklahoma State and Boise State remained fourth and fifth, respectively. The highest-ranked one loss team is Oregon (7-1), up one spot to sixth and followed by Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska and South Carolina. The latter two schools each climbed four rungs. Virginia Tech also moved up four slots to 11th and is followed by Clemson, Michigan, Houston, Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Arizona State, Kansas State and Georgia. Clemson dropped four spots, Michigan State and Wisconsin six and Kansas State seven as all four schools lost Saturday. Unbeaten Houston (8-0) and Penn State each climbed four rungs. West Virginia jumped three spots to 21st and is followed by Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Southern Miss and Texas. Georgia Tech and Texas are new entries this week, while Texas A&M and Texas Tech dropped out.

Last season, Jim Harbaugh's Stanford Cardinal team could have won the national championship. It's true. In fact, the Cardinal would have matched up better with the Auburn Tigers in the Allstate BCS National Championship Game than the Oregon Ducks did. Had Stanford beaten Oregon last October and then finished the regular season undefeated (remember, the Cardinal jumped out to a 21-3 lead, on the road, against the Ducks last year), it may very well have been Andrew Luck, not Cam Newton, lifting the championship trophy. After all, the Cardinal were nasty, dominant and peaking at year's end. (They destroyed a good Virginia Tech Hokies team in an uncompetitive FedEx Orange Bowl.) They had a stout defense and a passing game that would have done a better job attacking Auburn's vulnerable pass defense than the Ducks' Darron Thomas did. (Thomas is a great quarterback, but he's nowhere near the downfield thrower Luck is.) Nope, it's not a stretch to think that the Cardinal were good enough to win a national title last season -- and the same can be said of a 2011 Stanford team that deserves to be considered right up there among the national elite. Here's why the Alabama Crimson Tide and LSU Tigers should take notice: The Cardinal have reeled off 15 straight wins, the past 10 by 25 or more points. They are four-deep at tight end and tailback and rank in the nation's top five in many critical statistical categories including scoring offense, third-down conversions, passing efficiency, sacks allowed, scoring defense, rushing defense, sacks, tackles for loss and red zone defense. And, oh yeah, they've got a quarterback who is 19-1 with a 52-to-11 touchdown-to-interception ratio during the past two seasons, and he is also the best NFL quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning. As numerous as those accomplishments are, I have come to learn -- after seeing the Cardinal up close and personal and watching the carnage they leave in their wake -- that Stanford's domination can be best summed up with two words: manipulation and humiliation. Allow me to explain. Former Arizona Wildcats coach Mike Stoops, who faced off against Stanford earlier this season before being fired Oct. 10, said of preparing for the Cardinal, "No one in college football manipulates more than Stanford." The multiple tight ends, formations, personnel groups, shifts and motions are not window dressing for this team; rather, they are an orchestrated set of movements designed to create matchups that offer a physical and schematic advantage for the Cardinal. It is important to understand the roots of this offensive and defensive system. They are one part Bo Schembechler and one part Jon Gruden. They are equal parts Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw cultivated with decades of combined experience in the NFL and college games, maximizing scheme and personnel matchups. They have employed a scheme with the old-school college philosophy of power, trap and downhill lead runs while simultaneously using their years of experience in the NFL to shift, motion and put their personnel in matchups they can not only win but also dominate. Arizona interim coach Tim Kish praised Stanford's ability to get "their bigs against your littles" time and again. Stanford does this in many different ways, by splitting 6-foot-6 tight end Coby Fleener out against undersized corners and running a skinny post; by running a three-man defensive line in such a way to get 6-foot-4, 240-pound outside linebacker Chase Thomas on opposing running backs in pass protection; by down-blocking from a bunch set with 6-foot-8, 265-pound tight end Levine Toilolo washing down the edge so All-American offensive guard David DeCastro can pull and destroy an undersized linebacker. The final piece of the manipulation puzzle is time. The fact is that in a 20-hour work week, an opponent simply cannot solve the riddle of looks coming its way, let alone try to simulate the pace and ferocity with which they are delivered. With the manipulation complete, on comes the humiliation. There is nothing more frustrating in sports than knowing what is coming and being unable to stop it. Just ask anyone who's tried to defend Karl Malone and John Stockton on the pick-and-roll, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice on the quick slant or Mark Bavaro on the skinny post in "Tecmo Bowl." OK, maybe that last one is a reach, but the point is that when Stanford is executing to its full potential, it doesn't matter whether everyone in the stadium knows what's coming next -- there is no containing the onslaught. And the fact that Stanford can employ a simple power run from 40 different formations/personnel groups can be overwhelming for defenses. As Washington Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian said Saturday night after his 25th-ranked Huskies were handed a 65-21 beatdown, "They wear you out, and they wear you down. We couldn't keep pace with them." Other than possibly Oregon on Nov. 12, I don't see an opponent left on the Cardinal's schedule that can keep pace. The USC Trojans, who will play Stanford on Saturday, made a philosophical change this past offseason to sacrifice defensive size for speed to contend with the spread systems that victimized them all too often a season ago. That change paid dividends in South Bend this past Saturday but will be problematic in the Coliseum this weekend, just as it could be for the Ducks on the Farm in two weeks. Don't get me wrong, Oregon is still a very good team in 2011, but the Ducks are nowhere near as stout in their front seven as they were a year ago, and another suspension of playmaker Cliff Harris further weakens them on the back end. Also, the strength of Stanford defensively -- its edge presence and pressure packages -- will be more effective with the noise at home. Oregon isn't the only team that should be concerned about having to face Stanford. Alabama, LSU and Oklahoma State should all be keeping a watchful eye on their studious West Coast competition. Although the Cardinal may need a little help in addition to an undefeated record to make it to the BCS title game, that is not a reflection on the overall quality of this team. The 2010 Stanford Cardinal would have had a very good chance of taking down an SEC champ and winning the national championship. If the 2011 version can keep winning, it might get the chance to prove it.

Top 10 Teams Killing Bookies! (Based on the AP poll the week the game was played) Top 10 teams are . . . 16-1 ATS the last two weekends 38-14 ATS on the season 29-3 ATS when teams were favored by 27 or less points 16-0 ATS for teams ranked #6, #7, or #8 Non-Top 10 teams favored by 20 or more points are only 48-46 ATS on the season. * ATS stands for “against the spread” * 4 games in which Top 10 teams played each other are disregarded * 1 game was an point-spread TIE (aka: a push) Kansas Yet to Play a Team with a Loss! Kansas is the first team since at least 1980 that started the season vs. SEVEN STRAIGHT opponents who were undefeated at the time! 16-0 Odds for Packers? Vegas odds say Packers have 7% chance of ending regular season undefeated (13 to 1 against). Packers are favored in all 10 remaining games. Suck For Luck: Odds of current winless teams going 0-16: Colts: 2.5% chance (39 to 1 against) Dolphins: 1.5% (65 to 1 against) Rams: 1.1% (93 to 1 against) Slightly less than 5% odds of at least ONE TEAM going winless the entire season. Dolphins, favored by 1.5-points over Denver this week, are NOT currently favored in any of their remaining 10 games this season! Tim Tebow Slight Downgrade: Las Vegas considers Denver Broncos to be ONE-POINT WORSE with Tim Tebow at quarterback rather than Kyle Orton. Carson Palmer Considered Upgrade: Raiders odds to win Super Bowl dropped from 30-1 down to 20-1 after Carson Palmer trade. Packers (-8 at Minnesota) 1984 was the last time the Packers were favored by OVER a touchdown AT Minnesota. Colts +14 (at New Orleans) Only ONE OTHER TIME since 1993 have the Colts been underdogs of two-touchdowns or more. Dallas -13 over Rams Only 3 other times since 1998 have the Cowboys have been favored by 13 or more points. College Football: Tennessee +30 at Alabama Tennessee has never been a 30-point underdog in recorded point-spread history (back to 1980). The biggest prior point-spread in the Alabama/Tennessee series was 17 (each team has been favored by 17 over the other one time). Notre Dame -9.5 hosting USC Notre Dame has not been this big of a favorite over USC since 1996. Kansas State Makes History! Kansas State, with win over Texas Tech, become only the 5th BCS team since 1980 to win 4 straight games as an underdog in all 4 games
