Cincinnati -13 over SMU: After 2 comfortable wins against MAC opponents to open the 2014 campaign, Cincinnati (2-3) has dropped their last 3 overall to a combination of tougher national powers playing from within various conferences. In week 7 the Bearcats head south and west to Ford Stadium facing the winless SMU Mustangs (0-5) who come off their most promising effort at nationally ranked East Carolina. After managing just 12 points in 4 games overall including two shutouts on the short end, SMU hung around for quite sometime before falling to the Pirates 45-24 a couple of weeks back. Cincinnati is coming off a 55-34 loss in Miami that saw the Bearcats yield 621 yards of total offense including 335 of those on the ground. Gunner Kiel (113/192 1612 18 TD 6 INT) completed 31/57 for 355 yards and 3 TD, but was also picked off 3 times with one leading to a 46 yard return to paydirt by Tyriq McCord. Best known for their no huddle up tempo offense, Cincinnati scored 21 of their 34 points in the 4th quarter with the outcome virtually decided. The Bearcats were held to just 67 yards on 29 carries (2.3) including just 27 on 14 touches (1.9) by Rod Moore. Cincy through 5 games has just 473 yards on the ground and 3 TDs good for a 3.6 average. That's good for just 112th in the country. However behind Kiel they have a formidable passing attack led by top targets Chris Moore (17-414 5 TD) and Mekale McKay (17-321 5 TD) in the receiving core. 6 different receivers have caught at least 10 passes for triple digit yardage giving Kiel plenty of options to complete passes through the air and gain yardage in bunches at a breakneck pace. SMU seems to have finally found a QB in Garrett Krstich (69/121 618 2 TD 2 INT) who completed 42/67 for 339 yards with 2 TD and just 1 INT in the loss to ECU. While the Pirates' defense has been prone to giving up big plays due to their extreme offensive firepower, it gave the Mustangs something to build on even against more formidable foes within the AAC. Still there's plenty of work to be done in the virtually inept ground game, which has run for just 219 total yards and a TD, that by Prescott Line (19-50 2.6 1 TD) last week. Derri'kk Thompson (19-236) and Darius Joseph (21-164 2 TD) both got a lot more targets thrown their way a couple of weeks back and look to see even more exposure against a Cincinnati defense which has yielded an average of 40 points per contest. Keep in mind that despite signs of a breakout in week 5 the Mustangs are dismal offensively as they are 99th in passing offense, 126th in rushing offense and dead last in the country with an average of 7.2 points per game; they are also dead last in scoring defense as they give up 49.4 points per game. With neither of these teams sporting an efficient running game nor a balanced defense, it could be a toe to toe battle with Kiel getting the better of the inexperienced Krstich in the air attack. It should be a high scoring battle considering that the Bearcats are facing a defense that is just as vulnerable in the FBS of giving up big plays and plenty of points per contest. . If there was a get healthy game for the Bearcats, this is it.We have gone against SMU twice already this season, rolling with a big cover backing Texas A&M and floundering big time supporting East Carolina and their vulnerable secondary. We'll give the points one more time and depend on the explosiveness of Cincy's passing game hoping to pay dividends.. This one could be another roadkill game for SMU when it’s all said and done. Best of luck however you play as we look to get back on the winning track! YTD 2-5-1 .313

New England -9.5 over NYJ: After much panic for the Foxboro faithful following a 4 TD embarrassment at the hands of KC several weeks back, New England (4-2) has since emerged resurgent with consecutive convincing victories over Cincinnati and Buffalo taking over sole possession of the AFC East. However for gang green, the Jets (1-5) dropped their 5th straight earlier this week against Denver targeting head coach Rex Ryan as one of the lowest points of his 6 year head coaching career. While Tom Brady is looking more and more vintage as the season draws halfway, fans in the big apple are calling for Geno Smith's head even if Michael Vick remains waiting in the wings for a potential start. Brady (131/209 1444 10 TD 2 INT) is coming off a 37-22 win at Buffalo that saw the 14 year veteran complete 27/37 for 361 yards and 4 TDs, clearly his most prominent and productive performance this season. Over the last 2 games Brady has completed about 71% of his passes and thrown 6 TDs without a pick. Top targets Julian Edelman (40-409 1 TD) and Rob Gronkowski (26-341 4 TD) have made their presence felt by getting the best of opposing secondaries by running hot routes over the middle making it easy for Brady to gain big chunks of yardage on scoring drives. It also helps when you hold onto the ball, but even Brandon Lafell (15-282 3 TD) is getting into the act emerging as one of Brady's playmakers as evident by his 97 yards on 4 catches with 2 scores last week. While the passing game is thriving, the running game is far more limited especially since Stevan Ridley (94-340 3.6 2 TD) tore both his ACL and MCL leading to a landing on IR. That leaves Shane Vereen (42-216 5.1 1 TD) as the primary RB who will likely see the bulk of the carries with Brandon Bolden perhaps seeing more action. With the Jets defense 9th in the league against the run yielding only 92 yards per contest, look for Brady and company to be methodical and perhaps for the most part one dimensional. New England will attempt to catch the secondary off balance in developing plays and making quick decisions. Smith (109/191 1139 6 TD 7 INT) got off to a quick and promising start in Sunday's 2 TD vs. the Broncos, but finished just 23/43 for 190 yards with 2 TDs and an INT. As no surprise to anyone, the Jets passing offense ranks near the bottom averaging 182 yards per game. Stalled drives, errant passes for picks and inconsistent ball handling by the receivers have let to a disastrous and inept following offensively. Jace Amaro (24-212 1 TD) has emerged as one of the few bright spots and Smith's top target on the team. Eric Decker (20-258 3 TD) is battling a hamstring injury and showed more involvement in the receiving core against Denver catching 6 passes for 54 yards. Jeremy Kerley (20-172 1 TD) completes a nucleus of an otherwise balanced receiving core that has otherwise fallen victim to an ineffective Smith who needs to survey the field more and provide more accuracy. Gang green has what it takes to set up promising drives by gaining positive yardage on their initial carries. Chris Ivory (67-325 4.9 2 TD) makes the most of his opportunities while Chris Johnson (51-200 3.9 1 TD) hasn't been as frequently used with an ankle injury limiting his availability. The Jets rank 12th in the league in rushing offense with 122 yards per game. However if the defense cannot hold their own falling behind early will affect the approach on how effective the mix of passing and running the ball can be. If Brady looks like anything close to what he has accomplished over the last few weeks, look for him to spread out the Jets secondary and make successful completions to his receivers. While the front seven for the Jets is one of the more containing in the league, look for Brady to make the most of his opportunities on the corner sidelines and over the middle in man to man coverage. Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Damon Harrison will load up the middle and provide depth issues for New England at times, but in the long haul Brady's explosive approach will give the secondary problems. The Pats big 3 in Vince Wilfork, Casey Walker and Chris Jones are far superior physically against the Jets backs, plus let's not forget former Darrelle Revis who gives opposing receivers fits. It's very rare that outcomes on paper duplicate themselves on the field head to head, but there are so many angles and intangibles that support this otherwise one-sided matchup. Whatever Brady has to do with his arm and perhaps at times, his feet will carve up the defensive ends, lines and corners with efficiency in the passing game. What once looked like a shaky receiving core has shown significant consistency over the past few weeks, and NE simply has too many weapons on both sides of the ball. Even a better than average performance may not be enough from Smith, unless the running game can make a noticeable impact and the Jets pace themselves while keeping New England's offense off the field. I'll have more plays coming for this Sunday's action.

San Diego -7 over Oakland: AFC West leading San Diego (4-1) is looking to extend on it's longest winning streak since 2009 despite overcoming injuries and using a team effort to fill voids namely at RB at C respectively. Philip Rivers and company travel north to take on Oakland (0-4) who is still looking for their first win making their debut under interim head coach Tony Sparano. Though the offense has been short-handed, San Diego has outscored opponents 116-45 during the winning streak. They rank sixth with 29.0 points and ninth with 389.0 yards per game since Week 2. Philip Rivers (116/1651443 12 TD 2 INT) is off to one of the best starts of his career and last week tore up a Jets secondary completing 71% of his passes for 288 yards and 3 TD with just 1 INT in a 31-0 blanking of gang green. Rivers found at least 5 receivers with at least 3 catches and got plenty of protection from his offensive line along with 114 yards on 19 carries from Brandon Oliver (6.0) plus a score. Rivers has looked completely calm under center achieving his 4th straight start with a passer rating of 125 or better. Oliver came up big on a day when the Chargers lost yet another running back. Donald Brown (59-126 2.1) was knocked out of the game with a concussion in the first half. The Chargers already have lost Danny Woodhead for the season with a broken lower right leg and Ryan Mathews indefinitely with a sprained right knee. Eddie Royal (20-276 4 TD) and Antonio Gates (21-275 5 TD) remain Rivers' top 2 targets accounting for 75% of the scoring in the receiving core. With Oakland coming off a bye, they were completely dominated in London a couple of weeks back losing to Miami 38-14. Rookie Derek Carr (84/133 734 4 TD 4 INT) sprained his MCL but used the bye week in good timing and looks to be ready to go working hard to rehabilitate from his injury. Sparano has made it clear on several occasions that Carr must step up his game if the Raiders expect to get off the schneid. That would make one wonder if he reserves to make a switch to Matt McGloin in games they are playing well enough to compete and perhaps win.One achilles heel thus far for Oakland has been he lack of a ground game, as Darrin McFadden (45-135 3.4 1 TD) ha accounted for the only score. James Jones (21-272 2 TD) and Andre Holmes (11-148 1 TD) are Carr's top targets, but truth be told have more balance than advertised in the receiving core with Mychal Rivera (12-83) and using McFadden in the flat. Oakland has yet to score more than 14 points in a game this season, something Sparano will try to turn around in his second stint as an NFL head coach. He previously guided the Miami Dolphins to a record of 29-32 in nearly four full seasons. He took over in 2008 after the Dolphins were 1-15 in 2007 and led Miami to a mark of 11-5 with a surprising AFC East title. San Diego's defense comes in ranked third with just 290.8 yards allowed per game and is yielding a league-low 12.6 points per game. The club has not allowed a second-half point in the past two games and has not allowed a point in the fourth quarter since Week 1. The Raiders struggling offense sits dead last in scoring (12.8 PPG) as well as in total yards and rushing offense. Oakland is racking up just 61.5 yards per game on the ground, putting even more pressure on Carr. While Oakland ranks fourth in the NFL in pass defense at 207.0 yards allowed per game -- getting three takeaways that included an interception by cornerback T.J. Carrie -- the unit is yielding nearly 160 yards per game on the ground and has also come up with just four sacks from four different players. Oakland will come into this contest more motivated in week 6 rather than over its first 4 games under the recently fired Dennis Allen. However against San Diego's well oiled unit, it's going to take balance on both sides of the ball than just sheer motivation in order to salvage their first win. The Chargers passing game behind Rivers is uniquely balanced and with the versatility of Oliver should coast to their 5th straight victory staying atop the AFC West.
