Lookin At Lucky went off as the favorite at the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago in spite of the fact that he was stuck with the inside position for the outset of the race. This colt has been a favorite in every single race that he has run in, and for good reason. He is the only $1M horse in the Triple Crown races, save Super Saver, and he came up just a head short of being undefeated as a two year old both in sprints and in distance races, most of which were at the stakes level.
Sire Smart Strike was never a fantastic horse in his own right, but he did also sire Curlin, who was widely accepted as one of the best horses that racing has seen in the last decade. Jockey Garrett Gomez is largely considered one of the best in the sport, as he is the highest earning jockey in racing since 2006. He has a number of Breeders Cup successes, but the Triple Crown races have been a bit of a bugaboo for him. Last year, Gomez was supposed to lead Pioneerofthe Nile to the winner's circle, but he came up short, finishing second at Churchill Downs.
Especially considering the amount of speed in these races, Lookin at Lucky is going to have a hard time weaving through traffic, particularly once he decides that it's time to make his move. This is a horse that has proven that it can win from anywhere on the post draw, as he won out of the #13 position in the Breeders' Cup last year. The only fear for Gomez is that there are just too many speed horses that try to lure his colt into a speed duel far too early in the 1 1/4 mile race.
Trainer Bob Baffert is known as one of the best in the business, but he hasn't had a Derby winner since 1999 with Silverbulletday. The first Saturday of May was no exception, as Lookin At Lucky was jammed all the way back to 18th place at the outset and never fully recovered. Still, this could be a very, very sneaky play at the Preakness Stakes if entered.
