Trainer Bob Baffert took his best horse, Lookin At Lucky, away from this field right away after the Preakness Stakes, as there was no Triple Crown bid to be won at the Belmont Stakes. Running the risk of not having a colt in this field, Game on Dude came up in a big way in the Lone Star Derby last month, beating a respectable crop of three year olds that didn't include any serious contenders for the Triple Crown races.
The other two major races that this horse have run were both major failures, though. A fifth place finish in a race of colts that just weren't good enough to run in the Kentucky Derby can't be considered a good sign, nor can a seventh place finish, some 11 lengths off the pace set by Belmont favorite, Ice Box at the Florida Derby.
Game on Dude is a horse that has been bounced all over the place both in terms of his location racing and his jockey. He has run in Florida, Kentucky, and Texas in his L/3 races, with three different jockeys aboard. Baffert is at least hanging tight with Martin Garcia getting the mount for the second consecutive race after the victory in the Lone Star.
Distance could be a huge issue for this colt, as his only victories have come at 1 and 1 1/16 miles. In his only attempt at 1 1/8 miles, Game on Dude was buried by Ice Box. Breeding suggests that the distance shouldn't be an issue, and we tend to doubt that Baffert would bring a horse to Belmont that couldn't run the full mile and a half.
Game on Dude is going to be one of the longshot horses for the Belmont Stakes because of his history, but as proven at the Lone Star Derby, anything can happen in any given race.
