With horses such as Mine That Bird, A.P. Indy, and Seattle Slew in his pedigree, there is good reason to like Fly Down's chances of winning the third jewel of the Triple Crown on Saturday. Trainer Nick Zito knows that this isn't his best three year old, but it may be the one that is best suited to win this race even though he also trains the favorite, Ice Box.
Fly Down is very familiar with this racetrack, having won the Dwyer here at Belmont Racetrack just a few weeks ago. In that race, he knocked off fellow Belmont contender, Drosselmeyer.
Save a miserable ninth place finish in the Louisiana Derby in which he was bounced around quite a bit, Fly Down has been a colt that has performed quite well, winning three times and hitting the board in all four of his other races. That trip at the Dwyer was particularly impressive, as he won by six lengths and pulled away from the field.
However, since that point, there has been a jockey switch. Jockey John Velazquez will be riding aboard Fly Down in the Belmont Stakes, not Jose Lezcano, who rode him to the winner's circle last month. Velazquez has ridden this colt before, but he finished third in a stakes race as a two year old.
History is certainly on Fly Down's side in terms of track experience. The winner of last year's Peter Pan, Summer Bird, pulled the upset of Mine That Bird and a solid crop of three year olds to take the final leg of the Triple Crown, and Fly Down could be the next in a long succession of horses that ran at Belmont as preparations for this race instead of running in the Triple Crown races with much success.
Keep a very, very close eye on Fly Down, especially if he can post a speed rating similar to the 99 that he put up a month ago at the Dwyer.
