A favorite nearly every time he has been on the track in each of the last two years, Dublin has probably underachieved for his expectations and his pedigree. All of those unfulfilled expectations can be erased if he can win any of the Triple Crown races.
Dublin is directly produced from Afleet Alex, who was the champion of both the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in 2005 (he finished 3rd at the Kentucky Derby). Unfortunately for Dublin, most of his lineage from his sire's side were sprinters. His stamina is clearly going to be in question even though his father had no troubles even with the mile and a half at Belmont.
Dublin also has another problem, and that's that trainer D. Wayne Lukas just has not settled on a jockey on him on a regular basis. Thompson was aboard Dublin at the Southwest, a race in which he finished second by less than a length to fellow Kentucky Derby contender, Conveyance. Thompson was also the jockey for this colt at the Arkansas Derby and the Kentucky Derby, his two most recent races.
A trailer by nature, Dublin takes after his father, who was more of a stalker than a closer. This colt will have no fear starting anywhere on the track, as he will clearly just try to drop back and stay out of trouble for the first half of the race before beginning to make his move against weakening horses that don't have the legs for the full mile and a quarter. Historically, Dublin catches the lead pack at the stretch, but has had mixed results in the final furlong, often dropping several lengths back.
The Run for the Roses wasn't a pretty one for Dublin. He made it as high as fifth position heading into the final stretch, but never really found that extra gear to take down Super Saver at Churchill Downs. Many expect Lukas to send Dublin after Super Saver once again at the Preakness Stakes, a race which seems to suit him much better a 1 3/16 miles.
