Caracortado has run once a month from February through April in his three year old year. He was previously a 5-0 and undefeated horse that looked like it was set to do some real damage at the Triple Crown level before getting bested by Sidney's Candy and Interactif in the San Felipe and then not finding his way on the board at the Santa Anita Derby.
It's not often that you see a horse that runs specifically on synthetic surfaces, but that's all that Caracortado knows at this point in his career. He broke his maiden on dirt, but since then, has run all of his races on synthetics, spending the majority of his races at Santa Anita.

Jockey Paul Atkinson might not be a name that you're familiar with, but he is certainly the right jockey for this horse. Breeder and trainer Mike Machowksy has only had Atkinson aboard his prized three year old colt that has earned him a shade over a quarter of a million dollars in his career.

There's a real question about the level of competition that Caracortado has run up against in his career, as the only fields full of Triple Crown contenders were all clearly better than he was. However, it's always nice to know that you have a horse that knows what it feels like to win a race, and Caracortado has done just that.

Atkinson will have this thoroughbred up near the pace of the race, which is something that we out found could be detrimental to several horses in the Kentucky Derby. The quantity of speed in these Triple Crown races requires some of these colts to come out of their comfort zones. Super Saver adjusted well to being a stalker as opposed to a front-runner. Odds have it, particularly with an outside post, Caracortado is going to have to figure out the exact same thing if he has plans to find the board at Pimlico.
