NFL Week 8 trends
Denver, the surprise team of the season at 6-0, will have its pain threshold tested against Baltimore this week and Pittsburgh the following week. The Broncos have ‘covered’ 16 of 21 off a bye week and seven of their last eight versus AFC-North opponents. They have come up short in eight of nine ATS after scoring 30 points or more. In addition, Denver is 1-10 versus excellent passing teams (completion percentage 61 or greater).
After winning their first three games, the Baltimore Ravens have lost three straight. They spent the bye week trying to shore up a pass defense that ranks 23rd in the league. The Ravens have cashed 15 of 20 as home favorites of 3 ˝-points or less and six of seven with rest. They are 12-6 ATS after losing by three points or less and 35-18 ATS at home outside their division.
The Broncos have knuckled ‘under’ at a 17-6-1 clip off a division win. Baltimore has zipped ‘over’ in eight of its last nine contests in November.
Trends and angles for all the Week 8 NFL games appear below.
BROWNS (1-6, 3-4) at BEARS (3-3 SU&ATS)
Chicago has a golden opportunity to bounce back at Soldier Field following back-to-back road setbacks.
The Bears have cashed 20 of 27 at home versus AFC foes and they are 19-10-1 as non-division favorites in the Windy City. They are also 13-4 ATS after scoring 10 points or less and 18-6 ATS at home following a double-digit road drubbing. Cleveland is 6-12-1 ATS on the highway versus non-conference competition. The Browns have ‘covered’ 12 of 15 after allowing 400 or more total yards in two straight games. Chicago has eclipsed the number in nine of 11 as non-division home chalk. Conversely, Cleveland has ducked ‘under’ in 17 of 26 as non-conference pups.
TEXANS (4-3, 3-3-1) at BILLS (3-4, 4-3)
Houston takes aim at ending a six-game spread skid on the road against AFC-East opponents. The Texans have floundered in 15 of 19 as highway short-enders after a SU win and they have dropped six of seven ATS in the first of back-to-back road tests. Buffalo upset Carolina last week. The Bills are 10-5 ATS after a SU dog win. The Bills have jumped the number in 14 of 21 off a double-digit victory. They have headed in the opposite direction in 14 of 17 as home favorites of 3 ˝-points or less.
VIKINGS (6-1, 4-3) at PACKERS (4-2 SU&ATS)
Minnesota’s loss last week at Pittsburgh has thrust Green Bay back into the hunt for the top spot in the NFC-North. Prodigal son Brett Favre returns to Lambeau Field for the first time in an enemy jersey looking to lead the Vikings to a series sweep. They won the first encounter at the Metrodome as three-point favorites, 30-23, after failing to cash in five of the previous six series skirmishes. Minnesota’s ‘cover’ was just the fourth for a favorite in the last 22 encounters. The Packers are 8-1 ATS at home off a double-digit SU win, while the Vikings are 0-9 as road dogs versus a conference foe following a SU and ATS loss. These bitter rivals have topped the ‘total’ at a 13-5-1 pace in the last 19 shootouts in Wisconsin. Minnesota has ended on the up side at a 19-8-1 rate as division road dogs and Green Bay has jumped the number at the identical pace after scoring 28 points or more.
49ERS (3-3, 4-1-1) at COLTS (6-0, 5-1)
Alex Smith couldn’t have picked a tougher spot to makes his 2009 debut as San Francisco’s quarterback. Indianapolis has ‘covered’ at a 19-10-1 clip as non-conference chalk and the Colts are 31-16-2 ATS after scoring 28 points or more. They have outscored their last four opponents by an average of 24 points per game. The 49ers are 5-1 as dogs of four points or more versus AFC foes. They have flopped in 10 of 14 ATS after scoring 21 points or more and losing. Indianapolis has zipped ‘over’ in 18 of its last 27 non-conference battles.
DOLPHINS (2-4 SU&ATS) at JETS (4-3 SU&ATS)
New York looks to avenge a 31-27 loss as 2 ˝-point favorites at Miami. The Jets are just 1-6 as favorites of less than nine points with revenge. They have ‘covered’ at a 12-4-2 clip versus the Dolphins at the Meadowlands. The SU winner is 20-3-2 ATS. Miami has failed at a 12-6-1 pace as division road dogs.
RAMS (0-7, 2-5) at LIONS (1-5, 2-4)
Detroit is very rarely favored and for good reason. The Lions are 5-10 as non-conference chalk, 14-26 as non-division favorites and 16-32 when laying between 3 ˝ and 9 ˝-points. Of course, St. Louis is no bargain as pups, dropping 24 of 35. The Rams are 6-18 as road dogs of 3 ˝ to seven points. Detroit has cashed eight of nine after scoring 10 points or less and 23 of 28 after gaining four yards or less per play in its last outing.
SEAHAWKS (2-4 SU&ATS) at COWBOYS (4-2, 3-3)
Dallas, coming off its most impressive performance of the season against Atlanta, hosts a rested Seattle squad. The week off hasn’t done much for the Seahawks in the past. They have lost nine of 11 (1-10 ATS) with rest. The Seahawks have slipped at a 16-6-1 rate as non-division road dogs as well. The Cowboys have ‘covered’ six of seven at home against NFC-West enemies and 28 of 42 at home in November. Dallas is 17-3 ATS in Texas versus poor rushing teams that average less than 3.5 yards per carry. Seattle has slipped ‘over’ in its last eight post-bye contests, allowing an average of 30.5 points per game. The Cowboys have ended on the high side at a 17-8-1 pace off a double-digit win.
RAIDERS (2-5, 3-4) at CHARGERS (3-3, 2-4)
Oakland has won and ‘covered’ in four of its last five road tests against division foes. The lowly Raiders are also 7-1 SU and 6-1 ATS on the highway a week prior to their bye. The cloud among the silver spread lining is the fact they are 1-11 ATS after losing two of three and 4-19 ATS after scoring 17 points or less in three straight games. San Diego, trailing Denver by three games in the AFC-West, can hardly afford to look ahead to next week’s game against the New York Giants. The Chargers have won six straight (5-1 ATS) against Oakland and they have won and ‘covered’ five of six at home versus division foes. The Raiders and San Diego have ducked below the limit in 12 of 16 meetings at Qualcomm Stadium. Oakland has knuckled ‘under’ in seven straight games off a home loss.
JAGUARS (3-3 SU&ATS) at TITANS (0-6, 1-5)
The good news for the Tennessee Titans is that they had last week off. The bad news is they must go back to playing on Sunday against Jacksonville. The Titans lost their first two games this season by three points each and their third loss was by a touchdown. They have lost by 20, 22 and 59 points since those stumbles. Tennessee has won five of seven and cashed five of six off a bye. The club has won and ‘covered’ seven of 10 against the Jaguars. The Titans are 16-4 as home favorites of three points or less. The dog has ‘covered’ in the last seven meetings in Nashville. Jacksonville has won two of three and cashed three straight versus division rivals this season after going 1-5 ATS in 2008. The Jaguars have failed in 14 of their last 18 outings on grass. They have bounced ‘over’ in 10 of 11 chances after winning three of four games.
PANTHERS (2-4, 1-5) at CARDS (4-2 SU&ATS)
Arizona has failed to take advantage of prosperity in the past at home, dropping 12 of 15 spread decisions off two or more consecutive wins. The defending NFC champs are a dismal 0-8 as home favorites of 7 ˝ to 14 points, though they have cashed seven straight in Weeks 5-9. Carolina has come up short at a 6-3-1 clip in its last 10 road ventures. The Cardinals have climbed ‘over’ in 12 of 15 at home against conference competition.
GIANTS (5-2, 4-2-1) at EAGLES (4-2 SU&ATS)
The underdog in this bitter NFC-East rivalry has held all the aces, winning seven of nine meetings SU and cashing nine in a row. A strong case can be made for both Philadelphia and the New York Giants. The G-Men have cashed 18 of 22 on the road overall and 10 of 12 versus division foes. The Eagles are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 at Lincoln Financial Field and 11-2 ATS off a division effort. They are 14-4 ATS at home after playing a Monday night game as well.
Monday night special
The New Orleans Saints are 6-0 both SU and ATS thanks to quarterback Drew Brees and a league-best 39.7 scoring average. The Saints also rank first in yards per game (427.3). That means the scoreboard operator could be in for a busy Monday when the last unbeaten team in the NFC hosts an Atlanta Falcons squad that ranks 26th in defense (368.3 yards per game).
Surprisingly, New Orleans has struggled at the Superdome against poor defensive outfits. The Saints have dropped 14 of 17 spread decisions at home versus teams that allow more than 350 yards per game.
New Orleans has been the best bet on the board for quite some time, cashing at a 12-0-1 clip dating back to midseason of 2008. The Saints have cashed seven straight as favorites of between 3 ˝ and 9 ˝-points and eight of their last nine at home.
However, division foes have thrived at New Orleans, cashing at a 39-19 clip. That may not be a problem against the Falcons, who have lost and failed to cover in their last four road tests versus NFC-South rivals.
The underdog has barked in 13 of the last 17 series scuffles, while the home team is just 14-22 ATS. The Saints have grabbed the green in seven of the past 10 clashes, ‘covering’ four of five at home.
Six of the last nine meetings at the Superdome have ended on the low side. New Orleans has ducked ‘under’ in 14 of 18 at home after allowing 25 points or more in two straight games.
