The Tennessee Titans and first-round pick Adam "Pacman" Jones have still not finalized their five-year contract and he won't be making the trip to Atlanta this week for a preseason game against the Falcons.
"He wanted to play badly," Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said. "He wanted to play against Atlanta. I indicated to him that he had to practice this afternoon in order to go to Atlanta. He's not here, so he's not going to Atlanta. We'll hope he's here on the practice field and has enough work so he can go to San Francisco." The Tennessean reported that the two sides have agreed in principle on a five- year contract for the cornerback. The newspaper reported the deal was for guaranteed money in the $13.5 million range.
"The chances are diminishing each day, but that doesn't mean it's not a possibility," Fisher said about Jones starting in the regular season opener.
"He's a very good football player, but he needs to work and practice. We've got a lot of defense in that he's seen on the board and he's seen on tape but hasn't participated in. With each day, it's diminishing, but there's still a possibility." Jones, the sixth overall pick in this past April's draft, was a First-Team All-Big East Conference selection in 2004 after leading West Virginia with three interceptions. His best collegiate season came in '03 when he posted 89 tackles, four picks and 14 passes deflected A big-time playmaker with tremendous speed, Jones is also known for his tremendous special teams play and was voted the Big East Special Teams Player of the Year this past season, leading the league in punt returns with a 14.8 average that ranked him 13th nationally.
