Every college football season there are a handful of teams that get off to a fantastic start and remain unbeaten after several weeks of play. Ultimately, few schools make it all the way through the schedule unscathed. Is there a spot when such teams are vulnerable and a good time to play against them?
Section 5 of our NCAA Football e-CYCLOPEDIA features situations involving teams that are undefeated or winless at various points in the season. Here, we reveal one of those POWER SYSTEMS that shows, indeed, there is a great time to play against a team that has a perfect campaign going.
A school that makes it through at least 5 games without a loss starts to hear the talk of an undefeated season from its fans and the media. Give that team an extended break and the problem is exacerbated. It gives the players even more time to revel in the adoration and lose focus. Simply put, there’s nothing like extra time off to destroy the timing and momentum of an unbeaten team. Now, put that team in hostile territory and they can really struggle. At this point in the season, the undefeated road team will usually be facing a conference foe or regional rival that is licking their chops at the prospect of spoiling the visitor’s perfect season.
Hosts not off a non-conference road victory have been very competitive, as the unbeaten road teams are 0-24 ATS since 1996! Even last year’s eventual National Champion Texas was off their game at Texas A&M late in the season. The Longhorns were favored by more than 4 TDs but could only manage a 40-29 win over the Aggies, failing to cover by 18 points. |
