1. Revamped Heat Set To Face Pistons
In the SUN-SENTINEL, Ira Winderman writes that "when it comes to key
dates on the NBA schedule, Heat coach Pat Riley admits to breaking out
his Sharpie." Every move the Heat "made in the off-season, every
adjustment, came with one team in mind -- the Detroit Pistons," and tonight
(8:00 ET, TNT) the Heat meet the Pistons in its "first regular-season
meeting between the teams since Detroit came back in the final two minutes
to win Game 7 of last season's Eastern Conference finals at
AmericanAirlines Arena and advance to the NBA Finals."

2. Matching Bulls Run Could Prove Tough For Pistons
In the DETROIT FREE PRESS, Krista Latham writes that "ten seasons ago,
Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to a 23-3 start, the same record
the Pistons enjoy entering tonight's game against the Miami Heat." But
despite how well the Pistons have played so far, "it's hard to imagine
them matching the Bulls' torrid pace in that 1995-96 season." The'
95-'96 Bulls "won from Dec. 29, 1995, until Feb. 4, 1996, when the Denver
Nuggets ended the streak." For the Pistons to match that they "would
need to win through Feb. 1, when they play Minnesota at the Palace. That
stretch would include seven road games and four back-to-backs."

3. McHale: Team In Talks To Acquire Artest
Rick Alonzo reports in the PIONEER PRESS that "Kevin McHale, the
Timberwolves' vice president of basketball operations, acknowledged Wednesday
that the organization is talking to the Indiana Pacers about acquiring
Ron Artest." McHale however, "declined to discuss the situation in
detail, including when he thinks the Pacers might pull the trigger on a
trade." Wolves’ superstar, Kevin Garnett who has "publicly expressed
unhappiness earlier this season after the trade of Sam Cassell," has said
"he thinks Artest could fit in with the club under certain
specifications."

4. Broken Finger KO’s Camby
In the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, Aaron J. Lopez writes that "Denver Nuggets
coach George Karl says he gets lonely when Marcus Camby is not on the
floor. Those feelings of isolation could intensify well into the new
year." Camby’s "early season All-Star push hit a wall Wednesday when he
learned he has a fractured right pinkie," and a "timetable for his
return will be better known after surgery today to insert pins into the
finger." Camby, who is "averaging 16.3 points and an NBA-leading 12.9
rebounds" injured the finger on Monday night when he "hit it on the rim
during a game against the Golden State Warriors," and is expected to be out
1-2 weeks.

5. Grizzlies Work OT To Top Lakers
In the COMMERCIAL APPEAL, Ronald Tillery writes that "when the teams
moved beyond what clouded a strange basketball game Wednesday night in
Staples Center, the Grizzlies were declared the winners with a, 100-99,
overtime victory against the Los Angeles Lakers before a sellout crowd
of 18,997." The game featured "elbows to the eye and chin," technical
fouls, and "one Grizzly left early due to an ejection while another
fouled out with ample time left for a comeback." Damon Stoudemire "scored
six straight points on consecutive 3-pointers, including a bomb that
tied the game at 88 with 28 seconds left in regulation" and "forced the
extra period that allowed the Grizzlies a chance to win."

6. Peterson Proves To Be Raptors’ Iron Man
Mike Koreen writes in the TORONTO SUN, that "it was Morris Peterson's
night and Raptors coach Sam Mitchell was more than happy to present him
with a verbal present." Peterson "set a franchise record by playing in
his 418th career game last night, surpassing the injured Alvin Williams
(417), including an NBA active-high 307 consecutive games." Peterson,
however "has a while to go if he wants to set the NBA record for
consecutive games played. A.C. Green holds that mark, having played 1,110
games in a row."

7. Wizards To Recall Blatche
In the ROANOKE TIMES, Mark Berman writes that "This has been quite an
eventful year for 19-year-old Andray Blatche. In June, he was drafted
by the Washington Wizards. In September, he was shot. And this
weekend, he will leave the Roanoke Dazzle and return to the NBA." Blatche
"who was sent down from Washington two weeks ago, played in his fourth NBA
Development League game Wednesday," and said "he will rejoin the
Wizards after Saturday's game with Albuquerque."
