Thumbs up Two More For Tonight

531: Northern Iowa
532: Creighton

Creighton has been dominant in the last 10 Head 2 Head going 8-2 SU 6-4 ATS.
Creighton holds a 20-11 lead in the all-time series with UNI, including having won eight of the last nine meetings. CU has won eight straight against UNI in Omaha. Creighton (14-5, 8-3 MVC) looks to extend its 15-game home winning streak when it welcomes preseason MVC favorite and 25th-ranked Northern Iowa (19-3, 9-2 MVC) to town. Creighton returns four starters and seven lettermen from last season’s 23-11 team that won the MVC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Creighton has a perfect 11-0 mark at home and has won 15 straight home games. At 14-5 overall and 8-3 in the MVC, the Bluejays are one game behind Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois for first place in the league.

As a team, Creighton shoots 42.5 percent from the floor, 37.3 percent from three-point range and 68.1 percent at the line. The Jays score 68.5 points and yield 61.1 per game. Junior center Anthony Tolliver has blossomed into a threat on both ends of the floor. In addition to pacing the squad with his 55.5 percent shooting from the floor, he leads the team in blocked shots (1.8) per game. He is second on the team in both scoring (12.7) and rebounding (5.9) and hit the game-winning shot in Saturday’s 57-55 win over Wichita State.

Last year’s MVC Tournament MVP, senior Johnny Mathies leads the club with 13.8 points per game and is second on the team with 47 assists and 40 steals. Creighton boasts two newcomers in the starting line-up, junior Nick Porter and freshman Josh Dotzler. Porter averages 8.6 points per game, while Dotzler ranks in the MVC’s top five with 2.3 steals and 4.3 assists per contest.

The University of Northern Iowa (19-3, 9-2 Missouri Valley Conference), winners of five straight games, finishes its three-game road swing on Tuesday at Creighton. UNI is ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches Top 25 polls this week. The Panthers are ranked 25th in the AP poll and 24th in Coaches poll. This marks the first time ever that the Panthers have appeared in the national basketball rankings. After Saturday's win at Drake, UNI has won five consecutive conference road games. Not only is that the school's longest conference road winning streak since joining the Division I ranks in 1981, the Panthers had never even won five road league road contests in a season prior to this year, UNI has also won nine of its last 10 games, with the only setback coming in the UNI-Dome @ Cedar Falls on Jan. 11 against Creighton (55-52).
UNI head coach Greg McDermott is 2-8 against Creighton.
With 19 wins, the Panthers are tied with Duke, Illinois and Memphis for the most wins in the country.

UNI is led by preseason MVC Player of the Year Ben Jacobson (14.6 ppg., 4.1 rpg., 3.5 apg., 1.7 spg.). Junior forward Grant Stout (12.1 ppg., 8.4 rpg., 2.4 bpg.) and sophomore center Eric Coleman (11.9 ppg., 7.6 rpg.). Stout leads the MVC in rebounding and blocked shots, while Coleman was last year’s MVC Freshman of the Year and leads the league with 61 offensive rebounds, and is ranked second in the MVC in rebounding. Junior point guard Brooks McKowenis averaging 11.4 points per game over his last seven contests.

As a team, UNI averages 69.3 points per game and yields just 58.0 points per contest. The Panthers shoot 46.5 percent from the floor, 35.7 percent from three-point land and 71.7 percent at the stripe.
