The Terrapins took a beating last year, winning just one ACC game. An unproductive offense, combined with a conference-worst defense was a recipe that turned the Turtles into turtle soup. Now, with a new quarterback and a very young defense once again, Maryland looks to build a cohesive competitive team from mostly scratch.

Offensive Outlook: Last year’s offense struggled to both produce yardage and points. Senior QB Chris Turner led a 69th best passing offense that scored just 21.3 points per game. Turner threw for ten touchdowns and ten interceptions before his senior season was cut short due to injury. His 2010 replacement saw three games worth of action. Jamarr Robinson completed 46 of 85 passes for 459 yards, two scores, and most notably, no interceptions. If the offense is to succeed, the depth at wide receiver will be the reason. Maryland returns Torrey Smith, Adrian Cannon, and Ronnie Tyler. Smith led the team a year ago with 61 catches for 824 yards and five scores. Cannon gained 468 yards on 44 catches for four scores. Leading rusher, Da’Rel Scott is also back. He contributed 425 yards four touchdowns on 85 carries. There are plenty of weapons for Robinson to work with and this offense will improve if Robinson can put it all together.

Defensive Outlook: The Terps defense didn’t offer much to smile about last year. Opponents gained on average 396.2 total yards and 245.5 passing yards, while scoring 31.2 points per game. DB Cameron Chism returns, having led the defense a year ago with four interceptions. With a young defensive line and similar experience issues at linebacker, you would expect Maryland to turn to its new recruits. Look for freshmen DE Javarie Johnson and S Titus Till to see action on the field.

The Final Word: The Terrapins will improve on offense, but defense is the biggest question mark of 2010. Expect Maryland to see more success than last year, but it is not yet ready to contend in the ACC.
