The Nebraska Cornhuskers will fly south for the winter when they play against the Washington Huskies in the Holiday Bowl. The latest college football odds for this bowl game have the Cornhuskers listed as 14 point favorites with the total set at 53.
This will be the second meeting for Nebraska and Washington this season. Nebraska dominated Washington in the first meeting winning 56-21 on Washington's home field. The Huskies have had a tough year but rallied late to become bowl eligible. NFL bound quarterback Jake Locker faced several obstacles this year to include injuries and lack of talent around him, but the Huskies ended the year on a three game winning streak.
The Cornhuskers ended their last year in the Big 12 by losing the championship game to the Oklahoma Sooners. The 10 wins on the year is considered a successful season and a win in the Holiday Bowl would be fitting for this team.
Nebraska's offense is led by freshmen quarterback Taylor Martinez. He runs the ball very well averaging 6.4 yards per carry and amassed 942 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season. He is not alone in the backfield as Running back Roy Helu Jr can break some big plays on the ground. Helu ran for 211 yards and 11 touchdowns and should have a field day against a Washington defense that gave up 56 points in the first meeting.
Washington will rely on the arm of quarterback Jake Locker and the legs of running back Chris Polk put together a great season with 1238 yards and nine touchdowns. Locker needs a good performance against a top rated defense if he is going to show the NFL scouts he is still worthy of a draft pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
Nebraska is the better team but they problems covering big numbers as they are 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 games as a favorite of 10.5 or greater. The Huskies are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games as an underdog of 10.5 or greater and 4-1 ATS in their last five Bowl games.
Nebraska will not take Washington seriously after the earlier big win on the season. This will allow Washington to keep it close and get a possible back-door cover in this game.
