The Eagles made the best of a bad situation last year, as scheduled starting QB Dominique Davis left the university. With a former baseball player at the helm, the team experienced a roller coaster season, never winning more than two games in a row. In a down ACC Atlantic though, they came a game shy of winning the division. Again in 2010, the coaching staff will have to piece together an effective offensive unit.

Offensive Outlook: David Shinskie, age 25, led the Eagles at the quarterback spot in 2009. He was far from spectacular, throwing for 14 picks to nearly match his 15 TD tosses, completing a mere 51.9% of his passes. Shinskie is challenged for the job this year by sophomore Mike Marscovetra and freshman Chase Retting. Marscovetra impressed in the team’s spring game, leading his unit on consecutive scoring drives. He completed 13 of 16 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown, while Shinskie went 6 of 12 for 50 yards on four drives. At running back, great things are expected out of Montel Harris. A year ago, he led the team with 1,457 yards on 308 carries, scoring 14 times. At wide receiver, the Eagles will lose their top man in Rich Gunnell. Leading returning WR Colin Larmond Jr. caught just 29 balls for 596 yards and five touchdowns.

Defensive Outlook: The Eagles defense of a year ago allowed 224.5 passing yards and 19.8 points per game. Wes Davis, at safety, led the team with three interceptions. The team looks to improve its 71st ranking against the pass, with a great mix of juniors and seniors at linebacker, defensive back, and safety. The defense will also need to pressure opposing quarterbacks. They amassed just 17 sacks in 2009. With depth and experience though, this unit will improve.

The Final Word: This year should again see Boston College above .500 and near the top of the ACC Atlantic. Obviously, the question marks at quarterback and wide receiver may end up holding them back, but a more experienced defense is likely to keep the Eagles in some games. The key games for the Eagles will be early back to back home contests with Virginia Tech and Notre Dame.
