2008 ACC - Coastal Division Preview
Posted: August, 2008
The ACC is one of the greater conferences in the country and the ACC Coastal division has the overall ACC Champion in the Virginia Tech Hokies. Can they repeat? Maybe, but they will have five other teams in the coastal looking to knock them off the block. Virginia, Miami, and even North Carolina look to take over this year as the latest team to rule the roost. Let’s get right to the previews:
Virginia Tech Hokies: Beamer ball is back at it again and will lead with hard hitting defense and great special team play this year. On offense it looks like they will go with two QB’s sharing time between Glennon and Taylor. The big hurt was losing all seven front men on the defensive side of the ball. The hokies re-load but that loss will hurt the defense early. Tough road games at BC, Florida St, Miami and Nebraska will be hard to take but they still win the crown. Projected Finish: First in the ACC Coastal; 10-2
Miami Hurricanes: Welcome back Miami fans as you are ready to jump to the next level. Miami will compete for the title this year. That may seem hard to believe after the way they played last year but they line up nicely. Miami returns enough on defense that they should prove to be a formidable opponent. On offense they may be shaky with a true freshman in Robert Marve getting the nod, but he has a solid backfield that will take pressure off of him and a solid line to protect him. The game at Florida will be tough early but they can get past that and finish strong in the ACC, they may surprise. Projected Finish: Second in the ACC Coastal; 9-3
North Carolina Tar Heels: Watch out for North Carolina this year.TJ Yates is back as the signal caller for the heels and he put up school records in TD’s and yards last season. That’s not all they also boast a return by Greg Little at tailback and Hakeem Nicks as a star wide out. The offensive line only lost one starter and this offense will be affective. On defense they have a big returning cast to include the entire secondary. This team will make a move now and surprise a ton of so called experts picking them at the bottom of the ACC. Projected Finish: Third in the ACC Coastal; 7-5
Virginia Cavaliers: The Cavs have a lot of work to do after all of the suspensions and team problems they have had. They kicked out the QB and will turn the reigns over to Peter Lalich as they switch to a downfield attack. He will get plenty of protection from a solid offensive line up front. The defensive front line lost plenty of sack power led by Chris Long but they do have a secondary stocked with experience that can pick up the slack. Al Groh will have his squad ready but the last few games of the schedule are an absolute killer. Fourth in the ACC Coastal; 6-6
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: If Georgia Tech is going to do anything this year it will have to be on defense. GT hired Paul Johnson and look for him to install his sleepy run first, pass later defense that made him a success at Navy. It may just work because it seems that GT has the tools for the triple option. They have a solid defensive line that will play well and running backs to take up the slack. The problem may be at wide receiver. They are short in that spot and with a new system being run if a defense can stop the run like most in the ACC can it could lead to a long season for the yellow jackets. Projected Finish: Fifth in the ACC Coastal; 5-7
Duke Blue Devils: Duke again will be at the bottom of the standings in the ACC, but has plenty of promise. They return plenty of starters to learn a new system under new hire David Cutcliffe. They also return Thaddeus Young at QB, the problem is the offensive line has been full of holes and that will cause them to have another tough year. They are headed upwards and have improved; just not this year but they will surprise a few teams early. Projected Finish: Last in the ACC Coastal; 3-9
