Sunday's MLB Free Pick: Boston Red Sox -118

The Red Sox are showing some great value as a small road favorite against the Twins. Boston has won the first two games of this series and four straight overall. The Red Sox are swinging the bats extremely well right now, averaging 5.3 runs over their last 7 games. Minnesota on the other hand has lost four straight and six of their last 8 overall.

Both teams send out a starter who has struggled of late, but I don't think there's any question that Boston has the better of the two in John Lackey, at least when it comes to previous performance against opponent. Lackey has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his five starts vs the Twins. Minnesota's Pedro Hernandez has made two career starts against the Red Sox and both have been a complete disaster. He's allowed 14 runs on 19 hits in just six innings of work. He allowed 6 runs on 7 hits in just 2 innings of work against Boston earlier this month (5/8). The Spurs aren't getting the respect the deserve at home in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. San Antonio has won six straight at home over Memphis, including a 103-82 victory in the most recent meeting on 1/16. That win came without Manu Ginobili, which only makes me that much more confident that the Spurs will take care of business and cover this spread. There's no question the Grizzlies are a great defensive team, but the way you beat good defense is offensive execution. No team in the NBA executes better offensively than the Spurs. 4* A's/Rangers MLB Over/Under Annihilator: OVER 10

With winds blowing out close to 20 mph, I expect to see a very high-scoring game tonight between the A's and Rangers in Texas. What makes this a strong play is that neither team has an elite pitcher on the mound. Oakland will send out Bartolo Colon, who is 0-2 with a 7.05 ERA over his last three starts. Texas will counter with Josh Lindblom, who will be making his MLB debut tonight. Both of these teams have offenses that can score in bunches and the conditions should provide plenty of chances for that to happen. BET THE OVER!

4* Royals/Astros MLB Diamond Winner: Royals -1.5 (+103)

I look for the Royals to come into this game extremely motivated after getting swept by the A's in Oakland over the weekend. All three of those losses against the A's came by a mere one-run. Not only do I think Kansas City will win this game, but I'm confident they will do so by at least 2 runs. The Royals will send out Jeremy Guthrie who is 5-1 with a 2.82 ERA over 8 eight starts against Dallas Keuchel (0-1, 4.82 ERA). 7 of the Royals last 10 wins have come by at least 2 runs, which is a key stat to look for when playing the run line. 5* Diamondbacks/Rockies NL West Game of the Month: Diamondbacks -111

The Diamondbacks have the clear edge in this one. Arizona will send out one of the most underrated starters of 2013 in Pat Corbin. In 8 starts, Corbin is a perfect 6-0 with a 1.52 ERA and 1.069 WHIP. He's been nearly untouchable of late with a 0.89 ERA over his last 3 starts. While Corbin could struggle a little in hitter-friendly Coors Field, he should get plenty of run-support to keep him in line for the win. Colorado will counter with Jon Garland, who is 3-4 with a 4.89 ERA and 1.500 WHIP. Unlike Corbin, who has been on fire of late, Garland has a 5.40 ERA and 1.733 WHIP over his last three starts. Monday's MLB Free Pick: St Louis Cardinals -138

The Cardinals come into this game having won 8 of their last 11 games overall and are currently an NL-best 28-15 on the season. St Louis has got off to a strong start behind one of the best starting rotations in baseball. One of the big surprises has been how well youngster Shelby Miller has performed early on. In eight starts, Miller is 5-2 with a 1.40 ERA and 0.877 WHIP. What's important here is he has been equally dominant on the road, where he has a 3-1 record with a 1.87 ERA. In his last three starts combined, Miller has allowed one earned run on a mere 12 hits over 21 2/3 innings of work.

San Diego will counter with Jason Marquis, who has pitched well of late with a 2.37 ERA over his last three starts. However, I think Marquis has been extremely fortunate in the early stages of the season. His 1.347 WHIP is extremely high and for a pitcher who doesn't strike out a lot of batters, its only a matter of time before he gets torched for a big number. Given how the Cardinals are swinging the bats, there's a good chance that comes tonight. St Louis has scored 15 runs on an impressive 32 hits over their last 3 games. That adds up to an average of 5 runs and nearly 11 hits per game. With Miller on the mound, if they come anywhere close to that they should win this game easily. BET THE CARDINALS!

Tuesday's MLB Free Pick: Red Sox/White Sox OVER 9

Chicago and Boston should have no trouble finishing over the total tonight. Boston will start lefty Felix Doubront against the Chicago's lefty Jose Quintana. The fact that both pitchers are left-handed is a big reason why I think we will see a lot of runs. Both of these teams have hit left-handed pitching extremely well so far this season and both come in swinging a hot bat.

Doubront is 3-1 with a 5.34 ERA and 1.718 WHIP over six starts, but he's got a 6.27 ERA and 2.089 WHIP over four road starts. Quintana is 2-1 with a respectable 3.97 ERA in 8 starts, but has a 5.40 ERA and 1.467 WHIP in three starts at home. BET THE OVER!

The Spurs completely dominated Game 1 and I really like their chances of going up 2-0 in the series. I had the Spurs -4.5 in Game 1 and one of the keys to backing San Antonio is that great offensive execution can succeed against great defenses. Another key I think a lot of people are overlooking is the value of home-court. Both of these two teams play their best basketball at home. You also have to factor in the referees here. The Grizzlies hard-nosed defense will likely be called for several more fouls on the road than they would at home. This creates foul trouble and doesn't allow them to be as aggressive as they would like. BET THE SPURS!

5* Cardinals/Padres MLB Blue Chip Top Play: Cardinals -138

This one is pretty simply. The Cardinals will be sending out Adam Wainwright, who has owned the Padres. In five career starts vs San Diego, Wainwright has a ridiculous 0.97 ERA and 0.946 WHIP. Wainwright was roughed up a little in his last start, allowing 3 runs on six hits over 6 innings, but he's shown the ability to bounce back with a dominant performance. After allowing 5 runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Brewers on 5/4, Wainwright came out the very next start and threw a complete game shutout against the Rockies. Adding some value is that Wainwright will be opposed by Edinson Volquez, who is just 3-4 with a 5.55 ERA over nine starts this season and 2-4 with a 5.32 ERA over 9 career starts vs St. Louis. 5* AL Blue Chip Game of the Week: Red Sox -130

I'm confident the Red Sox will avoid the sweep tonight with their ace Clay Buchholz on the mound. Buchholz has been as good as it gets when it comes to AL starting pitchers. He's 6-0 with a 1.78 ERA and 1.035 WHIP over 9 starts and has been at his best on the road. In three starts away from home, Buchholz is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 0.952 WHIP.

The White Sox will counter with Hector Santiago, who is 1-1 with a 2.95 ERA over four starts. However, most of Santiago's success came in his first two starts. He's given up 9 runs on 12 hits and 5 walks over his last two starts. He lasted just 3 1/3 innings in his last start, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks before being pulled from the game.

Boston is 10-2 in their last 12 games as a road favorite and a ridiculous 26-5 in Buchholz's last 31 starts as a favorite of -110 to -150. BET THE RED SOX!

Both of these two teams come in well-rested. Indiana has had a full 3-days off since eliminating the Knicks and the Heat have been off for 6-days. I look for both teams to push the basketball and create a lot of easy looks offensively. It's something both teams understand they have to do because of how strong the other team is in half-court defense. There's no question the UNDER is a strong play in the playoffs, but I think the perception creates a lot of value on the OVER early in the series. It takes a game or two for the opposing team to figure out what the other team is trying to do. Look back at the Knicks/Pacers series. Those two teams combined for 197 points in Game 1. The next four games didn't see a score above 184. Miami figures to get the majority of the close calls in this game, which should get the Pacers into foul trouble and take away from their aggressiveness on the defensive side of the ball. On the other side, Indiana should be able to get a lot of easy baskets inside with their huge advantage down low. BET THE OVER!
