It was reported today that Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were two of the players that tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003. This is big news because Manny and Ortiz were two big reasons that the Red Sox finally won a World Series after a long drought. According to the report, when David Ortiz was asked about the 2003 test, he responded: “I’m not talking about that anymore,” and said “I have no comment.” While it is sad news does it really surprise anyone? Manny has recently served a suspension for using banned substances and David Ortiz has been in one of the worst slumps in his career and many were speculating it was because he was coming off steroids. The real question maybe does anyone still care? The fans of baseball have been over saturated with reports of players using all types of substances to try and get better as a player or recover from injuries. We have been through the drama of Roger Clemens in the court house and Rafael Palmeiro wagging his finger on Capitol Hill. This is just another sad example of how the drugs dominate the sport and perhaps may have put an asterisk over a decade of baseball. It won’t be long before this becomes less and less of an issue and people forgive the players that used and they vote them into the hall of fame.
Regaw Rants July 2nd Ranting about NBA free agent rumors and why steroids are not that bad anymore. Today there is a press conference to introduce Shaquille O’Neal as the newest member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. This is a great move for the Cavaliers as they add a big man and another legitimate scoring threat to play with Lebron James. This is one heck of a shot by Cleveland management they are going for the Championship this year, but they are not alone. The Magic signed Vince Carter to compliment Dwight Howard and kept pace with the Cavs. The Pistons made two huge signings with Ben Gordon and Charlie Vellenueva and they got much younger. The latest report out is that the Celtics, not to be outdone, will sign Rasheed Wallace as they offered him a two year deal. This has made the Eastern conference the tougher conference in the NBA. The Lakers and the Spurs will represent the West but the East has a slew of teams that are dangerous. Houston is hurting with the news that Yao Ming is out maybe for the entire next year and the balance of power has shifted. Jason Kidd is considering the Knicks but my guess is Mark Cuban will not let him get away and the Mavericks have reportedly already offered him a three year deal. The Lakers just announced that they signed Ron Artest so they get even better! The free agent period is not over yet, but it is starting to heat up this summer! In baseball Manny Ramirez is slated to make his return to the Dodgers after serving a five game suspension. Is it just me or as a society are we okay with Steroids now? Manny was treated like a rock star in the minor leagues and he will receive a huge round of applause when he goes up to the plate at the next Dodger home game. I think we have been littered with so much news about steroids we almost accept it. The news that Sosa was on performance enhancing drugs (of course) went by without making a sound and unless some big names come out on the list from 2003 then steroid news may not even make the front page anymore. For those of you that think it is still a big deal, just check out NASCAR. Jeremy Mayfield tested positive for doing methamphetamines. He claimed it was a mixture of over the counter stuff and prescribed medication and the combination resulted in a positive test. Not quite. The results came back positive for meth! That is pretty serious when you’re driving a car at the speeds that drivers do. The PR machine that NASCAR is has kept this at a fairly low level of scrutiny. So maybe this is another reason why steroids has taken a back seat and seems less offensive than it used to be, unless your Wade Boggs of course.

Welcome to the Father’s Day rants! A hearty Happy Father’s Day to all Dads’ out there who deserve to have a great day! This edition of the rants will cover the incredible shrinking A-Rod, and the best father/son athletes of all time! This weekend the Yankees announced that A-Rod was getting a “rest” for a couple of games this week. It was announced that he was suffering from “fatigue”. I think it’s time to start calling this “illness” what it really is, Roid Hangover. Alex Rodriquez is a gifted athlete and he will be great again but for now he is struggling just like other athletes have when they stop taking steroids. He was just hitting .145 in June and plenty of those outs were infield outs. Just a look at Rodriquez now and from a couple of years ago and you can physically see a difference. He will be back and should put up some good numbers once he gets over this “fatigue”. In honor of father’s day I wanted to list my top three pair of father and son athletes to play in professional sports. 3) Muhammad Ali/Laila Ali—the first father/son combo is actually father/daughter but still one of the best. Muhammad Ali is simply “the greatest”. His daughter followed in his footsteps. She is 24-0 and 21 of those are via the knockout! 2) Dale Earnhardt/Dale Earnhardt Jr.—heading into the world of NASCAR the #2 father/son combo on the list is the Earnhardt’s. Dale was a pioneer in the sport and will always be remembered as one of the best. Jr. has had a tougher go of it but has still presented himself as a force in the sport. In the Sprint Cup he has 18 wins and 87 top 5 finishes. 1) Bobby Bonds/Barry Bonds—Love them or hate them this spot belongs to the Bonds family. Bobby was a multiple Gold Glover and three time all-star. Barry currently holds the home run record* but has numerous MVP’s and arguably on e of the best players to ever play the game! Happy Father’s Day everyone!
