A lot was expected of the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres this season and neither team has delivered.  The Padres are already playing for next year and the Braves are not far from being in that situation.  One of the few reasons to watch the Padres is Jake Peavy and he gets the start on Friday for the Padres as they open up a three-game series against the Braves.

Minnesota Twins at San Diego Padres Preview 6/24/08

MLB Betting Preview
Minnesota Twins (40-36) at San Diego Padres (32-45)
Tuesday, 10:05 pm Eastern

The red-hot Minnesota Twins head into San Diego on Tuesday to begin a series with the Padres.  The Twins have won six straight and eight of nine to move just 1.5 games back of the White Sox for first place in the American League Central.  To continue that streak they will have to defeat Jake Peavy on Tuesday night.

Check out the current line for this game at SBG Global.

The Twins are now 9-3 in Interleague play and seem better suited to take on National League teams. “We kind of match up a little better,” manager Ron Gardenhire said, “We are a team that can bunt, we are a team that can scratch out runs, we don’t rely on the big home runs. So we kind of can play National League baseball.” The Twins send Kevin Slowey to the mound on Tuesday.  He is 4-6 with a 4.37 ERA.  He gave up one run and seven hits in six innings last Wednesday in an 11-2 win over Washington.

San Diego continues to struggle and even Jake Peavy is barely above .500 despite a 2.88 ERA.  His 5-4 record is indicative of the lack of run support he receives.  He also has not been the same since going on the DL.  He went just four innings last Wednesday against the Yankees and gave up four runs and six hits. “His stuff was good,” manager Bud Black said. “His velocity was there.”  Peavy has pitched against the Twins only once in his career, giving up three runs in 6 2/3 innings.  Overall the Padres have lost six of their last seven games. The Twins and Padres have split six meetings in their history with each team winning two of three on the road.

Here are the MLB betting stats for Tuesday’s game.  The Twins are 4-0 in their last 4 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Twins are 6-0 in their last 6 overall. The Twins are 7-2 in their last 9 vs. the National League West.

The Twins are 37-14 in their last 51 Interleague games. The Twins are 3-7 in their last 10 games as a road underdog.

The Padres are 5-1 in their last 6 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Padres are 8-3 in their last 11 games as a home favorite. The Padres are 4-9 in their last 13 vs. the American League Central. The Padres are 3-10 in their last 13 Interleague home games. The Padres are 1-6 in their last 7 overall. The Padres are 2-6 in Peavy’s last 8 starts.

The Under is 5-1 in the Twins last 6 vs. the National League West. The Over is 8-2 in the Twins last 10 road games. The Over is 9-3 in the Twins last 12 games as an underdog. The Over is 11-5 in the Twins last 16 overall.

The Over is 4-1-1 in the Padres last 6 vs. the American League Central. The Under is 20-8 in the Padres last 28 games as a home favorite. The Over is 5-1 in Peavy’s last 6 starts vs. the American League Central. The Over is 4-1 in Peavy’s last 5 starts overall. The Under is 20-7-2 in Peavy’s last 29 starts as a home favorite.

The San Diego Padres don’t get much of a break as after facing the National League Champion Colorado Rockies they now have to travel to Arizona to take on the first place Arizona Diamondbacks.  It will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.  Former Diamondback Tony Clark who signed with the Padres will be facing his former team for the first time. “You have to move on,” D-backs manager Bob Melvin said. “He’ll always have an effect on players here, and we’ll always feel close to him.”  SBG Global reports that early MLB betting has the public taking Diamondbacks at Home.

The matchup on Friday should be a good one as San Diego goes with Curt Young while Arizona counters with Dan Haren.  Young did not pitch well in his last start, allowing 7 runs in just three innings against the Dodgers.  Last year against the Diamondbacks, Young was 0-3 with a 7.32 ERA.

Haren has pitched well in all three of his starts this year. He is 2-0 with an ERA of 2.50 on the season.  He did not pitch against San Diego last season.

Colorado at San Diego Preview 4/17/08

MLB Betting Preview
Colorado at San Diego
Thursday, 10:05 pm Eastern

SBG Global Opening Line: Padres  - 157, Total  7 Over -120

The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres conclude a three-game set on Thursday evening at Petco Park.  Jake Peavy gets the start for the Padres while Jeff Francis goes for the Rockies.  Peavy is already in mid-season form with an ERA of 1.64 and a 3-0 record. Francis has struggled so far going 0-2 with a 9.53 ERA. SBG Global reports that early MLB betting has the public taking Padres at Home.

Francis is happy to not be facing the Diamondbacks who throttled him in both of his starts this season. He wasn’t much better against the Padres last year going 1-3 with a 6.61 ERA against them in five starts. Peavy allowed seven hits and two runs over the first three innings, but just one run on two hits over the last three innings in his last start against the Dodgers.  This is Peavy’s first time facing the Rockies since last year’s Wild Card play-in game.

Colorado is struggling to score runs and that doesn’t look to improve on Thursday against Peavy and the Padres.  This series is a rematch of last year’s Wild Card game that has very bad memories for San Diego.  The loss to Colorado in that game cost the Padres as chance at glory.  Colorado won 9-8 in 13 innings in that game and went on to the World Series where they lost to Boston.  “It was definitely amazing,” Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba said. “Twenty years from now I’m still going to remember that game.” If Colorado has not won that game they would never have had the subsequent success that ended in the World Series. “That was an unreal game, something I’ll always remember,” said Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, “It was cool for baseball fans to be able to watch that game.”

SBG Global Current Line: Padres  - 166, Total 7 Over -120

Both Colorado and San Diego are looking up at Arizona in the National League West this season as the Diamondbacks picked up right where they left off last year.  Both teams have similar rosters to what they had last season although each made some minor changes.  The Rockies did lose second baseman Kaz Matsui who went to Houston while the Padres signed Jim Edmonds to replace Mike Cameron in center and added second baseman Tadahito Iguchi. The Rockies now have Mark Redman and Franklin Morales in the rotation while the Padres picked up Randy Wolf to bolster the rotation.
