July 4th, 2009

(Record: 0-1, -1.00)

This weekend is the 4th of July weekend and the sporting world has plenty of fireworks planned for the holiday.  The game of the week is no different as it will focus on the FOX Saturday game of the week.  This Saturday the New York Mets travel to Philadelphia to battle the Phillies and it will be aired on Fox.

The Mets have been hampered by injuries all season and have lost the majority of the starting lineup at one point or another.  The amazing thing is even with all of these injuries the Mets are just two games behind the Phillies in the east.  The Phillies have had problems pitching and winning at home.  They are one of the league’s best road teams and need to put a run together if they want to defend their title in the east.

On Saturday the Mets send Fernando Nieve to the Hill to face the Phillies.  Nieve had been a nice surprise for the Mets this year up to his last start against the Brewers when he failed to make it to the fourth inning.  He allowed the more runs in that game then he allowed all year in a Mets uniform.  The only time that he has faced the Phillies has been in a relief appearances.

The Phillies counter with crafty veteran Jamie Moyer.  Moyer is 6-6 on the year and has proved that he is hittable.  He got a win in his last start against the Blue Jays but got hit hard early.  He rebounded with a few solid innings and got some help from his offense.  This year he has not done well against the Mets giving up a run per inning pitched and posting an ERA over nine.

The Mets have a chance to take the division lead if they play well enough in this series and Philly has proved that they do not play well at home.  If there is a game in the series where the Mets have the edge in pitching it’s this one.  Nieve will have plenty of stamina after only going three innings in his last game and the Mets have Moyer’s number.  The Mets will get a solid performance by Nieve and jump on Moyer early to provide some run support.  ON Saturday the Mets take down the Phillies.

Game of the Week Pick: New York Mets

Projected Final: Mets 7 Phillies 4

June 27th, 2009

This week the Game of the Week pick will focus on Sunday night baseball on ESPN.  ESPN will feature the subway series as the New York Yankees take on the New York Mets.  This is a rematch of the series when the Yankees blasted Mets ace Johan Santana in a 15-0 blowout win.  The Yankees took two out of three in that series but this series has a change of venue as the Yankees will be playing in Citi Field.

The Yankees send troubled starter Chien-Ming Wang to the hill for the Sunday finale of the series.  Wang started the season on a bad note and expectations of another 19 win season were crushed early.  It got so bad that Yankee skipper Joe Giradi gave him an ultimatum to pitch well or lose his role as a starter.  Since that demand he has put together two very good games against the Nationals and the Braves and looks to be regaining some of the form he had last year.  His sinker is becoming effective again and he is not allowing the big inning.

The Mets counter with Livan Hernandez on Sunday night. Hernandez has been a delightful surprise for the Mets and has performed valiantly this year. Hernandez has filled in and become a valuable starter after injuries have ripped through the rotation.  Hernandez comes into this game after a great pitching performance against the Cardinals.  His assignment will not get any easier this week against the Yankees.

The subway series has always been entertaining and the Mets hold an 8-7 edge.  The Mets playing at home should certainly help them in this game, as of this writing they are 22-14 this year.  The lineup has been decimated by injuries but the replacements have been playing with energy and scoring runs.  The Yankees bats have started to warm up in the last series against Atlanta otherwise they have been very cold.  Wang will have troubles in this game and expect him to be pulled early as the Yankees try to fill voids to play with the NL rule book. Wang has never been the same after injuring his foot. The loss of the DH will be counterproductive for the Yankees lineup.  Livan Hernandez knows how to pitch in big games against opponents on a big stage.  The Mets should be listed as dogs in this game, take the home town Mets to get the win on Sunday night on ESPN!

South Carolina at Vanderbilt
Thursday, 8:30 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: South Carolina  -  9.5  ,  Total  41

South Carolina and Vanderbilt open up the SEC part of their schedules on Thursday as the Commodores host the Gamecocks on ESPN.  Vanderbilt has had very little success in SEC openers in the past as they are just 4-21 in their last 25 conference openers. SBG Global reports that early NCAA Football betting has the public taking South Carolina on the Road

Vanderbilt has also struggled at home in SEC openers. The Commodores have lost their last 10 conference openers played at home.  They could have trouble scoring against a South Carolina defense that shutout North Carolina State last week by a score of 34-0.  It was the first shutout for South Carolina since 2006 when they won at Mississippi State.  The offense was led by running back Mike Davis who had over 100 yards on the ground and quarterback Chris Smelley who threw two touchdown passes in relief of quarterback Tommy Beecher who suffered a concussion.  It could be Smelley that gets the start on Thursday for South Carolina.

SBG Global Current Line: South Carolina  -  9.5  ,  Total  41

Vanderbilt dispatched Miami of Ohio last week 34-13 and looked good doing it.  They have a solid defense that could cause South Carolina some problems on Thursday. “Defensively Vandy’s a very good team. We’ve got to execute, protect the quarterback run and everything.” South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier said, “We’re looking forward to see if we can improve.”

Here is a look at the NCAA Football betting stats for Thursday’s game.  The two teams are meeting for the 18th time in history.  South Carolina is 14-3 straight up in those meetings.  They met last season at South Carolina and Vanderbilt upset the Gamecocks by a score of 17-6.  The last time they played at Vandy the Gamecocks won 31-13 in 2006.  South Carolina is 8-1 in Nashville against the Commodores and has won the last four meetings.  Before last season the Commodores had lost seven straight to South Carolina.  The Gamecocks are 11-4 against the spread in the last 15 games against Vanderbilt.  Three of the last five games have gone Under the total.

Pick: Vanderbilt +9.5 2units

College Football Betting Preview
North Carolina State at South Carolina
Thursday, 8:00 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: South Carolina  -  13.5  ,  Total  50.5

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is not making any predictions about this year’s football team just yet.  Last season the Gamecocks started 6-1 but collapsed down the stretch, losing their last five games and missing out on a bowl game.  That has put the pressure squarely on Spurrier to produce this season.  They open up the season with an interesting test as Tom O’Brien’s North Carolina State Wolfpack come to town. SBG Global reports that early NCAA Football betting has the public taking South Carolina at Home.

“We’re trying to stay a little bit underneath the radar, whatever you want to call it, about not trying to talk too big and, hopefully, let our play do whatever talking needs to be said,” Spurrier said, “I don’t know we’ve got a really good team, an average team or what. I don’t know yet.” The Gamecocks are only 21-16 under Spurrier and the pressure is starting to build on the old ball coach.  “Time can only tell if we’re a different team than in the (past) three years I’ve been here,” Spurrier said. South Carolina is starting the season with unproven junior quarterback Tommy Beecher who has thrown only 24 passes in his career.  The good news for Spurrier is that his defense is excellent.  They have both Jasper Brinkley and Nathan Pepper back from injury.

The key for North Carolina State will be to run the ball and play defense. New quarterback Russell Wilson may be in for a long night facing that tough South Carolina defense. The Wolfpack have a solid defensive as well led by defensive end Willie Young and defensive tackle Alan Michael Cash.

SBG Global Current Line: South Carolina  -  14   ,  Total  45

Here are the NCAA Football betting stats for Thursday’s game. The Wolfpack are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in August. The Wolfpack are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games on grass. The Wolfpack are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Wolfpack are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games.

The Gamecocks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games. The Gamecocks are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 vs. the ACC. The Gamecocks are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games on grass. The Gamecocks are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.

The Under is 6-1-2 in the Wolfpack’s last 9 non-conference games. The Under is 5-1 in the Wolfpack’s last 6 Thursday games. The Under is 5-2-1 in the Wolfpack’s last 8 road games.

The Under is 4-1 in the Gamecocks last 5 vs. the ACC. The Over is 23-9 in the Gamecocks last 32 home games.

Pick: South Carolina 2units!

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Houston Texans at Dallas Cowboys
Friday, 8:00 pm Eastern – CBS

SBG Global Opening Line: Cowboys   - 6  ,  Total  40.5

The real Dallas Cowboys may finally make more than a token appearance on Friday night when they host the Houston Texans.  The Cowboys haven’t played their starters much in the first two preseason games and lost to San Diego and to Denver.  The starters will get a lot more action on Friday and the Cowboys are favored to get their first preseason win of the year. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Cowboys at Home.

Dallas is expected to play quarterback Tony Romo, wide receiver Terrell Owens and the rest of the first strong offense at least the first half on Friday.  The starting defense should get a similar amount of time. The Cowboys are more focused on this preseason game than on either of the first two. “We started working on things that we’re going to work on and play in the ballgame that’s coming up rather than things you’re going to play throughout the year,” head coach Wade Phillips said, “We were more specific about the things we wanted to do this ballgame rather than looking long-term.”

SBG Global Current Line: Cowboys   - 5  ,  Total  41.5

The Texans have looked good this preseason winning both of their games against Denver and New Orleans.  Quarterback Matt Schaub has been virtually flawless going 18-21 for 216 yards and two touchdowns.  The Texans will be focused more on the running game on Friday than anything else.  Starting running back Ahman Green is injured and could actually be released which means the starting job is up for grabs between Chris Brown, Marcel Shipp and rookie Steve Slaton.  Star wide receiver Andre Johnson is questionable for this game.

The Cowboys and Texans have met six times in the NFL betting preseason with each team winning three games.  Dallas and Houston have met every year in the since the Texans became a franchise in 2002, four times in the preseason and twice in the regular season.  Each team has won all three of their home games in the series.  The last time the two teams played at Texas Stadium in the preseason was in 2005 when the Cowboys won by a score of 21-9.  Last year in Houston, the Texans got the 28-16 victory.

Pick: Texans +6 2 units

San Antonio Spurs (52-23) at Utah Jazz (50-26)
Friday April 4, 2008 , 8:05 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Jazz – 3, Total 197

The best home team in the NBA, the Utah Jazz play host to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night. The Spurs have won eight straight and are looking like a serious threat to defend their NBA title. San Antonio is just a half game back of New Orleans for the top spot in the Western Conference. “Games mean a lot these days,” Tim Duncan said. “Obviously everyone’s record is really close and everyone is playing for positioning. Every game down the stretch means a lot and has that playoff intensity.” SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Jazz at Home.

The Spurs are playing great during their winning streak, holding opponents to 87.4 points per game. The Spurs will be challenged on Friday though as the Jazz are 34-4 at home this year. The Jazz have won five of six overall including Wednesday’s 117-100 win over Minnesota. Utah leads the Northwest Division by 3.5 games but they finish the season playing a tough schedule including two games against the Spurs. “It’s going to be a tough schedule for us,” Mehmet Okur said, “but at the same time it’s a good challenge. We just want to finish the season strong.”

SBG Global Current Line: Jazz – 3, Total 197

Here are the NBA betting stats for Friday’s game. The home team has won the last seven games between the two teams. The Spurs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Spurs are 36-17-1 ATS in their last 54 vs. the Northwest. The Spurs are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Friday games. The Spurs are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games as a road underdog.

The Jazz are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. the Southwest. The Jazz are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite. The Jazz are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Jazz are 34-13-1 ATS in their last 48 home games. The favorite is 7-0 ATS in the last 7 meetings between the two teams and the home team is 11-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.

The Over is 4-1 in the Spurs last 5 overall. The Under is 9-3 in the Spurs last 12 games as an underdog. The Under is 5-2 in the Spurs last 7 road games.

The Over is 4-0 in Utah’s last 4 games as a home favorite. The Over is 5-0 in Utah’s last 5 overall. The Under is 6-1-1 in Utah’s last 8 vs. the Southwest. The Over is 4-1-1 in Utah’s last 6 Friday games. The Under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in Utah between the two teams.

Pick: Take the Jazz -3 for 3units. For more NBA Discussion visit the NBA Betting Forum.
