Hall of Fame Game
Buffalo Bills vs. Tennessee Titans
Sunday, 8:00 pm Eastern – NBC

The 2009 NFL preseason begins on Sunday night in a nationally televised game on NBC as the Buffalo Bills face the Tennessee Titans in the Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio. It will mark the debut of Terrell Owens for the Buffalo Bills.
The Titans are 2.5 point favorites in Hall of Fame Game odds with a total of 31.

The Hall of Fame game odds have moved toward the Bills in this game, simply because Buffalo has been in training camp longer than Tennessee. The Titans should not be discounted though. They are the superior team and they have the better quarterback rotation. “We’re going to approach it like our first preseason game.” Tennessee Head coach Jeff Fisher said, “We’ll play everybody that’s capable of playing and some of the starters will play a little bit longer because of numbers. We’ll clearly be competitive throughout the game.”

The Titans have Kerry Collins as the starter at quarterback, Vince Young as his backup and Patrick Ramsey. Rookie Alex Mortensen is the rookie who may get mop up duty. The Bills have Trent Edwards starting with Ryan Fitzpatrick as the backup. Matt Baker and Gibran Hamdan are competing for the third spot. Oftentimes preseason games are determined by the play of backup quarterbacks and Tennessee definitely has the edge. In the second half it could be Ramsey who determines the outcome of this game for the Titans.

Here is a look at the NFL betting stats for Sunday’s game. The Bills are 5-3 ATS in their last eight preseason games. The Bills are 5-0 ATS in their last five preseason openers. Buffalo is 7-0 ATS in their last seven preseason games as an underdog. The Bills are 0-2 in the Hall of Fame game. They lost in 1989 to Washington and in 1974 to St. Louis.

The Titans are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 preseason games as a favorite. Tennessee has played in the Hall of Fame Game twice and is 0-2 but both of those games were when they were the Houston Oilers. The Titans lead the preseason series against the Bills, winning 9 of the 12 games.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Denver Broncos at Arizona Cardinals
Friday, 10:00 pm Eastern

SBG Global Opening Line: Cardinals  -  3  ,  Total  38

Normally the final game of the preseason is virtually meaningless but that may not be the case in Arizona on Friday night as the Cardinals host the Denver Broncos.  It was thought that Kurt Warner had won the starting quarterback job for Arizona but head coach Ken Whisenhunt was unhappy news was released by the media and supposedly Matt Leinart is still in the running.  It may not matter though if Leinart plays as bad as he did a week ago when he was 4-12 for just 24 yards against the Raiders, throwing three interceptions. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Cardinals at Home.

Kurt Warner will start the game against Denver but Whisenhunt is still waiting to name the regular season starter.  “We all want to know,” Warner said, “For Matt and myself, it’d be nice knowing what the situation would be and be able to move forward with it. The way I look at it more than anything, the sooner it can happen, the sooner we can get past the (interviews and media coverage) that goes with it, and you can prepare for the game.”  Warner has not taken nearly as many snaps as Leinart in the preseason but has played far better.  “Hopefully we’ll get in enough snaps with the first (offensive) line that both can play,” Whisenhunt said. “I just wanted to make sure Kurt gets his timing with the ones for this game, much like we did in Kansas City.” Most of the starters for both teams are not expected to play a great deal on Friday so how much can be determined with backups playing alongside Warner and Leinart is up for debate.

SBG Global Current Line: Cardinals  -  3  ,  Total  38

Denver has looked good this preseason, especially quarterback Jay Cutler.

He is 30 for 43 for 352 yards, with three touchdowns, and no interceptions this preseason.  He probably won’t play long on Friday which means backups Patrick Ramsey and Darrell Hackney will see the bulk of the action. Starting wide receiver Brandon Marshall may see some action though since he will miss the first part of the regular season due to suspension.

NFL betting stats show that Denver has a 12-5 edge in the all-time preseason series with Arizona, including a 21-3 home win last year in the preseason.  The Broncos have been great in preseason finales in recent seasons, winning eight of their last nine. Denver is 3-1 in its last four preseason games against the Cardinals including three straight.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Jacksonville Jaguars at Washington Redskins
Thursday, 7:00 pm Eastern – NBC

SBG Global Opening Line: Redskins  -  3  ,  Total  35

A little bit of revenge could be on tap when the Washington Redskins host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night in the final preseason game for both teams.  Jacksonville defensive coordinator Greg Williams was expected to get the head coaching job at Washington when Joe Gibbs retired but he was bypassed for the job and Jim Zorn was hired.  Williams could have some strong feelings and his Jacksonville defense could want to prove a point in this game.
SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Jaguars on the Road.

Williams replaced former Jaguars’ defensive coordinator Mike Smith who took the head coaching job in Atlanta.  Jacksonville’s defense has looked strong under Williams in the preseason but they are still missing first round draft pick Derrick Harvey who is holding out.  The Jaguars are also missing wide receiver Jerry Porter who has been out with a hamstring injury. Washington will be without defensive end Jason Taylor who was injured last week against Carolina.  Free safety LaRon Landry is also questionable.

Last week in the preseason, the Redskins were humiliated by the Carolina Panthers 47-3.  Quarterback Jason Campbell was sacked four times in the loss.  It was the Redskins worst loss in the preseason since the 1970 merger.

The Jaguars defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week in preseason action as quarterback David Garrard was 10-16 for 118 yards with two touchdowns.

SBG Global Current Line: Redskins  -  3  ,  Total  34

Normally in the final preseason game the starters don’t play long, if at all, but in the case of Washington they may play longer than normal simply for the fact they played so poorly a week ago. “That’s something I’m going to discuss,” head coach Jim Zorn said. “I’m open to it. I may have to do that just based on what we did [against Carolina]. It’s not a matter of throwing them back out on the field, or putting on pads and scrimmaging for two hours. It’s a matter of developing a drive and getting back some tempo before the regular season. A 10-day layoff without getting them out there for a drive [against Jacksonville] may not be the right thing.”

The NFL betting teams have met twice in their history in the preseason as the Jaguars have won both meetings including a 31-14 win last year. The Redskins have played the Jaguars four times in the regular season and lead the series 3-1.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Seattle Seahawks at San Diego Chargers
Monday, 8:00 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Chargers  -  6  ,  Total  39.5

The matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and San Diego Chargers on Monday was expected to feature both starting quarterbacks but that will not be the case as Seattle starter Matt Hasselbeck is unlikely to play due to a stiff back.  Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace has been excellent this preseason but is unlikely to see much time since he has a sore groin so that means third string quarterback Charlie Frye will get the bulk of the snaps on Monday for Seattle. “Absolutely your starting quarterback has to be ready for the first regular-season game,” Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren said, “(With) the guys that have played as long as he has played … you are not quite as concerned about their minutes in the preseason. Now, I want him (Hasselbeck) to feel better. That’s my main concern. But as far as not playing or not getting enough reps, I don’t worry about that too much.” Seattle is also missing receivers Bobby Engram and Deion Branch due to injuries. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Chargers at Home.

The Seahawks are excited about their rookie running back Justin Forsett.  He has 194 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.  He is battling with Julius Jones, T.J. Duckett and Maurice Morris for playing time.  The Chargers are also happy with their rookie running back.  Jacob Hester will see the bulk of the action on Monday since LaDainian Tomlinson is unlikely to play.  Tomlinson has not played in a preseason game since 2005.

SBG Global Current Line: Chargers  -  6  ,  Total  37

NFL betting stats show that the Chargers and Seahawks are meeting in the preseason for just the ninth time, with Seattle leading the series, 5-3. Last year the Seahawks won 24-16.   The two teams have met 48 times in the regular season with Seattle leading that series 25-23.  Another interesting NFL betting statistic shows that Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren was 37-25 to the over in his preseason career before this preseason began.  Holmgren has always been known as an offensive coach in Seattle and Green Bay so that should not come as a huge surprise.

Pick: Chargers 2 units

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Buffalo Bills at Indianapolis Colts
Sunday, 8:00 pm Eastern – NFL Network

SBG Global Opening Line: Colts  -  3 ,  Total  37

Indianapolis will open up their new stadium on Sunday as they host the Buffalo Bills in preseason action.  The game will be shown on NFL Network and could end up being a battle between backup quarterbacks.  Normally the starters for both teams would play into the third quarter but Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning is still out and Buffalo starting quarterback Trent Edwards is questionable. That means that Jim Sorgi will get a lot of playing time for the Colts while J.P. Losman will see a lot of time for the Bills. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Colts at Home.

The Colts could have a couple of starters back in action on Sunday.  Top defensive stars Bob Sanders and Dwight Freeney might play on Sunday.

Indianapolis head coach Tony Dungy has said the starters will play into the third quarter on Sunday.  “I always like to do that in the third preseason game – get us playing in the third quarter so we get the feel for what we do at halftime and how we make adjustments, incorporating that into the second half. I’d say those guys would play into the third quarter for sure.” Dungy said.

The Colts lost the Hall of Fame game to Washington, lost to Carolina in week 1 in overtime and defeated Atlanta last week.  Buffalo has split their two preseason games, winning last week against Pittsburgh but losing their opener against Washington.

SBG Global Current Line: Colts  -  5.5 ,  Total  38

NFL betting stats show that this will be the fifth preseason meeting between the Colts and Bills.  Indianapolis has a 3-1 preseason series edge.   The two teams used to be in the same division for many years which is why they have only met four times in preseason history.

Looking at the NFL betting stats for the coaches we see that Buffalo head coach Dick Jauron has a below .500 record against the spread in his preseason career. Tony Dungy is also below the .500 mark against the pointspread in the preseason as head coach of the Colts.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Philadelphia Eagles at New England Patriots
Friday, 7:30 pm Eastern

SBG Global Opening Line: Patriots   - 4  ,  Total  38

The New England Patriots have looked nothing like the team that went undefeated during the 2007 regular season so far this preseason.  The Patriots have been without quarterback Tom Brady and he is questionable for this game on Friday.  Normally the third game of the preseason is a dress rehearsal for the regular season but the Patriots may not treat the game as such.  Philadelphia will be looking at the game as a big test though.  Quarterback Donovan McNabb and the Eagles will look to play far better than they did last week against Carolina. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Eagles on the Road.

The Eagles will be without wide receiver Kevin Curtis on Friday.  He will be out for quite a while after suffering a sports hernia. “We’re trying to not wait and do that whole thing,” head coach Andy Reid said. “We’re trying to get on it. We’ve identified (the hernia) and it’s the problem, and we’re trying to get it taken care of.”  Wide receiver Reggie Brown will also not play on Friday and that means DeSean Jackson will start in Brown’s spot Friday in New England, while Greg Lewis and Hank Baskett will rotate at Curtis’ spot.

The Patriots will be looking for their regulars to play better on Friday even if Brady does not play. “We try to emphasize every opportunity we get to prepare for our regular season opener. So that is all of training camp practices and all four preseason games. I think they are all important and we try to maximize all of them. Each game gives the players the opportunity to fine-tune their skills, techniques, reactions and all that in preparation for the regular season.” Head coach Bill Belichick said, “This [game vs. Philadelphia] is a good one. It is a good opportunity against a good football team. The guys that get the chance to participate in the game, I’m sure they will be able to utilize that to help them prepare for the season. Not everybody will, but the guys that do, that will be good for them. The guys that don’t, hopefully they will get it some other time or they have already gotten it.”

SBG Global Current Line: Patriots   - 2.5  ,  Total  37

NFL betting stats show that this is the fourth time in the preseason that the Eagles and Patriots have met with Andy Reid as head coach of the Eagles. The Patriots won all three preseason meetings from 2002 to 2004. The Eagles are 14-25 under head coach Andy Reid in the preseason.  Overall the two teams have met 17 times in preseason history.  The Patriots have a 9-8 edge in those meetings and have won the last six overall.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Oakland Raiders at Tennessee Titans
Friday, 8:00 pm Eastern – FOX

SBG Global Opening Line: Titans  -  4.5 ,  Total  34

The Tennessee Titans host the Oakland Raiders in a preseason game on Friday that will be broadcast on FOX television.  This will be the 10th time the Raiders and Titans have met in the preseason with the Raiders holding the 5-4 edge.  The teams have met a lot in the regular season with the Raiders holding a 23-18 advantage over the Titans. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Raiders on the Road.

The Raiders got a nice win last week in the preseason as they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 18-6.  The defense and special teams were excellent for Oakland as the special teams scored a punt return touchdown while the defense forced four turnovers.  Running back Michael Bush was impressive for the Raiders in his first action while first round pick Darren McFadden also played well, rushing 12 times for 48 yards.

The Titans opened the preseason last week as they routed the hapless St. Louis Rams by a score of 34-13.  The offense racked up 495 yards, 340 of which came on the ground. First round draft pick Chris Johnson was very impressive as he rushed for 77 yards including a 66 yard TD run.  Tennessee is very excited about their first round draft pick. “When he gets the ball in his hands in the open field, I think there’s always a chance,” Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said.  It is also very possible that Johnson splits time this season with last year’s starting running back LenDale White. “Obviously, we’re going to have two players and as I look at it, it’s going to be LenDale and it’s going to be Chris. We’re going to change them out throughout the game and back them up.” Fisher said.

SBG Global Current Line: Titans  -  4 ,  Total  35

Friday’s game will feature the top quarterbacks selected in the 2006 and 2007 NFL Drafts.  Vince Young was the third overall pick in 206 while Russell was the first pick in 2007.  Last week in preseason action Young was only 3-6 but he did have an impressive 35 yard run.  Russell played a quarter last week against the 49ers and was 2-5 for 13 yards.  He is expected to play into the second quarter on Friday followed by quarterbacks Marques Tuiasosopo and Andrew Walter. The Titans quarterback rotation has Young going for about a quarter on Friday followed by Kerry Collins, Ingle Martin and possibly Paul Thompson.

Taking a look at the NFL betting stats for this game we see that the Raiders have been an excellent under team in the preseason of late.  They are 10-3 Under the total in their last 13 preseason games.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Buffalo Bills (Toronto)
Thursday, 7:30 pm EasternSBG Global Opening Line: Steelers   - PK  ,  Total  33

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills meet in preseason action on Thursday in Toronto.  The Steelers won their preseason opener last week against Philadelphia 16-10 while the Bills lost to the Washington Redskins by a score of 17-14.  The NFL will have a total of eight games in Toronto over the next five years.  Five of those games will be regular season contests with the other three being preseason games. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Steelers on the Road.

The Pittsburgh first string offense looked good last week as they took the opening drive against the Eagles and scored as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger found WR Santonio Holmes for a 19-yard score.  The Steelers didn’t do much on offense the rest of the way as Jeff Reed hit three field goals to complete their scoring.  The Steelers lost backup quarterback Charlie Batch to a collarbone injury in the game and they recently signed Byron Leftwich to replace him.

The Bills were only able to put one touchdown on the board against Washington last week as James Hardy pulled in a pass from J.P. Losman followed by a two point conversion.  Rian Lindell hit two field goals and that was the scoring for the Bills last week in their 17-14 loss to Washington.  Quarterback Trent Edwards and the first string offense did not really click. “A little shaky,” said Edwards, “We had a couple of missed formations, a couple of forced passes, a couple of inaccurate throws, but that’s going to happen in a preseason game. That’s why we’re playing these games. We want to work these kinks out.”

SBG Global Current Line: Steelers   - 1.5 ,  Total  33.5

Here is a look at some NFL betting information for Thursday’s game.  The two teams have met a total of 22 times in their history with Pittsburgh winning 13 times.  They met last September in the regular season and the Steelers won 26-3.  The teams have been six times in the preseason with the Steelers winning five of the six games.  This is their first preseason meeting since the Steelers won 20-0 in 2001.  The Steelers are now 105-94-1 all-time in the preseason.  This marks the Steelers third trip to Canada to play a preseason game but their first in Toronto.  They won both previous visits.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles
Thursday, 8:00 pm Eastern – FOX

SBG Global Opening Line: Eagles  - 3 ,  Total  35.5

NFL primetime preseason action on Thursday is highlighted by the game on FOX television as the Philadelphia Eagles host the Carolina Panthers. Although it is only a preseason game it should be a good one as the Eagles are expected to play their starters for the majority of the first half.  The Panthers are coming off a 23-20 overtime win against Indianapolis last week while the Eagles lost 16-10 to Pittsburgh. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Panthers on the Road.

The Eagles will be looking for another solid performance out of quarterback Donovan McNabb and the first string offense.  Last week they played well before departing, as McNabb completed 10 of 13 passes for 97 yards and a score.  Brian Westbrook did not play last week but is expected to see action on Thursday.  Also expected to see their first preseason action are cornerback Asante Samuel, defensive end Chris Clemons, running back Lorenzo Booker, as well as top draft picks, Trevor Laws and DeSean Jackson.

The Panthers are led by quarterback Jake Delhomme who played well last week in his first action since suffering a season-ending right elbow injury last year. “All in all it was not a bad start. We ran the ball pretty efficiently early, and I was impressed with our pass rush in the first quarter,” Carolina head coach John Fox said. “I was pleased with our quarterbacks. It wasn’t awesome. I thought we missed a couple opportunities, but then again, I thought we made some pretty timely throws, too. It was a good start, but we also had a good start last preseason and went to Philadelphia where we did not play well.”  The Panthers hope that wide receiver Steve Smith is in the lineup on Thursday.  He did not practice early in the week and was listed as day-to-day.

SBG Global Current Line: Eagles  - 3  ,  Total  35.5

A look at the NFL betting history shows that the Panthers and Eagles have met four times in the regular season over the past four seasons with the Eagles winning three of the four games. Carolina head coach John Fox is 17-8 in the preseason including 9-3 on the road. Carolina finished the preseason undefeated in 2003, 2004 and 2006.  Thursday’s game will be the second preseason meeting between Carolina and Philadelphia in their history.  They met last year in the preseason at Philly and the Eagles won 27-10. Under head coach Andy Reid, the Eagles are 13-25 in the preseason.

NFL Preseason Betting Preview
Cincinnati Bengals at Green Bay Packers
Monday, 8:00 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Packers  - 3 ,  Total  36

The Brett Favre era at Green Bay is over and the Packers will start life without him on Monday as they host the Cincinnati Bengals in preseason action.  Favre was traded to the New York Jets late on Wednesday so the Packers spotlight now moves to quarterback Aaron Rodgers. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Bengals on the Road.

The Packers will probably have Rodgers playing a lot more than Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer. The starters for Cincinnati are expected to go a couple of series on Monday. “We’ll evaluate that and see. Generally they’ll go 10 or 15, somewhere between those number of snaps.” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said, “But we’ll see how it goes.”  Lewis was looking forward to playing the Packers. “It’s going to be good and I told our team it’s a great atmosphere. It’s always great to go to Lambeau Field, but going into this deal with this weekend on Monday night and the whole thing they’re dealing with up there, obviously a lot of the questions this week as we meet with the network people are going to be about that.”  The Bengals have a new defensive coordinator in Mike Zimmer and he will look to get after Rodgers and the Green Bay offense immediately on Monday. Last year the Bengals were 27th in the league in yards, so they will be looking to make big improvements this season.

SBG Global Current Line: Packers  - 3 ,  Total  36

Here is a look at the NFL betting stats for Monday’s game.  The Packers and Bengals have met 15 times in preseason play.  The Bengals have a 10-4-1 edge in preseason action against the Packers and have won the last four meetings.  The teams have met only once in the preseason since 1991 as the Bengals won at home in 2006 by a score of 48-17.  At Green Bay the teams have split four preseason meetings.  The teams also played five games at Milwaukee and the teams split the matchups with one tie. The regular season series between the two teams is tied at 5-5.
