The Florida Marlins and New York Mets will begin an important three-game series on Friday with Ricky Nolasco facing Oliver Perez.  Nolasco has been excellent all season for the Marlins.  He is 11-6 on the season with a 3.91 ERA while Perez is 7-7 for the Mets with a 4.12 ERA.

The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies begin a three-game series on Tuesday with both teams battling for the National League East lead. The Mets will be counting on Johan Santana on Tuesday while the Phillies will go with new acquisition, Joe Blanton. SBG Global reports that early MLB betting has the public taking Mets at Home.

Santana is 8-7 on the season with a 3.10 ERA. He has a nice ERA but really hasn’t pitched up to his reputation. He will be needed in a big way as the Mets hosts the Phillies on Tuesday. Santana is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA this season against the Phillies. Santana allowed five runs and six hits in only four innings in his last start against Cincinnati.

The Phillies go with Blanton who they picked up in a trade with Oakland. He is 5-12 this season with a 4.96 ERA. He is 1-0 against the Mets though, pitching 15 innings without allowing a run. “Maybe a change of scenery will help him,” Philadelphia pitching coach Rich Dubee said. “We think he’s going to be a piece that’s going to help us get into the playoffs and further on.” Blanton also did not pitch well in his last start, allowing six runs and nine hits in six innings against Seattle.

MLB Betting Preview
New York Mets (10-7) at Chicago Cubs (12-6)
Monday, 7:05 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Cubs - 135, Total 8.5 Under -115

The Chicago Cubs and New York Mets open up a quick two game set on Monday in Chicago with Carlos Zambrano facing John Maine. Zambrano is 2-1 on the season with an ERA of 3.04 and is coming off a nice outing on Wednesday against Cincinnati when he allowed only two runs in seven innings. The Cubs are playing well having swept Pittsburgh over the weekend. Zambrano is 3-1 in his last five starts against the Mets with a 3.41 ERA. SBG Global reports that early MLB betting has the public taking Cubs at Home.

John Maine gets the start for the Mets on Monday. He is 1-1 on the season with a 3.78 ERA. He did not pitch well against the Cubs last season, posting a 10.57 ERA against them. Maine has been solid this season except for giving up walks. He gave up four in his last start on Wednesday against Washington. “The walks, they’ve been up in all these games,” Maine said. “To be able to miss that bad - in the seventh after I got two outs - it’s frustrating.” The Mets lost on Sunday at Philadelphia 5-4, ending their five game winning streak.

MLB Betting Preview
New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies
Friday, 7:05 pm Eastern

SBG Global Opening Line: Phillies  -115, Total 8 Under -115

The marquee pitching matchup on Friday takes place in Philadelphia as Cole Hamels and the Phillies host Johan Santana and the Mets.  It should be a classic matchup between two of the best pitchers in baseball.  “They both have a devastating changeup. Santana has a little more experience, with a couple of Cy Youngs, and Cole is still getting to a point where he wants to be.” Phillies pitcher J.C. Romero said, “It’s going to be a great game, and I can’t wait to see it. I’m going to be a fan for the first six, seven innings. Hopefully, I’ll get a good one.”  SBG Global reports that early MLB betting has the public taking Mets on the Road.

The Mets took two of three from the Phillies at Shea Stadium in their first meetings of the season. This series is in Philadelphia and Hamels is ready for the matchup against Santana. “I don’t even care,” Hamels said. “The guy could have eight arms and it’s not going to bother me.” Hamels is coming off a win over the Cubs.  He threw seven shutout innings giving up only one hit. Hamels is 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA against the Mets in four career starts.

SBG Global Current Line: Phillies  -110, Total 7.5 Over -115

Santana has lost two games this season including two against the Brewers.  He gave up three home runs in the last game against Milwaukee.  He struck out seven and walked two.  He will be facing a Phillies lineup that scored 10 runs on Thursday in a 10-2 win over Houston.  Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell homered in the same game for the first time this season. “It’s good to see our offense come alive,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “We could’ve scored more runs, but we left 11 guys on base. We didn’t knock guys in with less than two outs, and we have to get better at that.”

Every starting position player except Eric Bruntlett had at least two hits while Chris Coste had four hits, including a home run. “As a team, we needed a game like this,” Coste said. “It’s a lot easier to hit when there are runs on the board, just like it’s easier to pitch, like for Brett, when we got the lead. It becomes contagious. You go up there with nothing to lose and sometimes you have games like this.”

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets 4/9 Preview

MLB Betting Preview
Philadelphia Phillies (4-4) at New York Mets (2-4)
Wednesday, 7:10 pm Eastern – ESPN 2

SBG Global Opening Line: Mets  -140, Total 9.5 Flat

The Philadelphia Phillies definitely have the New York Mets number. They beat them for the ninth straight time on Tuesday but they may have lost National League MVP Jimmy Rollins for a while.  He sprained his left ankle and his status for Wednesday’s game is uncertain.  Philadelphia will be going with Kyle Kendrick on Wednesday while the Mets will go with Mike Pelfrey.  Kendrick beat the Mets last year allowing two earned runs in 6 and two thirds innings.  Pelfrey pitched against the Phillies once last year and lost, allowing two earned runs in five innings. SBG Global reports that early MLB betting has the public taking Phillies on the Road.

The Mets disappointed the largest Opening Day crowd in franchise history on Tuesday as they lost 5-2. The Phillies didn’t do anything against Oliver Perez but jumped all over reliever Scott Schoeneweis.  An error by Carlos Delgado with the bases loaded led to two runs scoring. Jayson Werth singled in the go-ahead run and Jimmy Rollins had an eight inning RBI single.

Tom Gordon pitched a perfect ninth to get the save. “I don’t know if you can say, it’s having one’s number,” the Phillies Shane Victorino said. “We’ll go out there [Wednesday] and play nine. We’re not going out there saying, ‘We own the Mets’ or anything like that. That’s not the attitude we have. [On Wednesday], we’ll forget about beating them nine straight.”   The Mets are sure tired of hearing about losing to the Phillies every game. “All of us are tired of hearing that the Phillies have our number,” the Mets’ Billy Wagner said. “The Phillies don’t have our number. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot. There’s confidence on their side, but there’s no lack of confidence over here saying that we can’t get those guys out, or that our hitters aren’t as good as their hitters. We’re a good team, and we know we’re going to go out there and a month from now, we’ll be hearing a different story.”

SBG Global Current Line: Mets  -138, Total 9.5 Flat

The Mets have not started the season well, losing four of their six games.  They also have to start winning against Philadelphia. “We have to start playing better,” David Wright said. “We have to prove to ourselves we can beat them. … We’re a different team from who we were last year. But they have that swagger.”
