Another week of NBA betting action is in the books, and Bang the Book takes a look at the hot and the not from the week that was, sponsored by Sportsbook.com!

ATS Power Poll
1: Atlanta Hawks (31-18 ATS): The Hawks just can’t get over the hump and hop past the Orlando Magic for the lead in the Southeast Division. A brief three-game ATS slide was ended on Friday with a 91-81 win over the Bulls. It was the best defensive effort for Atlanta since December 5th.
2: Utah Jazz (29-17-3 ATS): The Jazz parlayed a stretch of seven games of which six were at home into a 5-1-1 ATS run. Utah has won eight straight basketball betting battles outright, and they’re snapping right at the heels of the Nuggets for the top spot in the Northwest Division.
3: Oklahoma City Thunder (31-19 ATS): Is the MVP of the entire NBA really on the Thunder? F Kevin Durant certainly has a great gripe as we trickle towards the All-Star Break. He’s averaging 29.7 points per game and has scored at least 28 points in every game that he has played since January 9th. OKC has covered three straight and six out of eight.

ATS Power Outage
1: New Jersey Nets (18-31-1 ATS): It was a rare good week for the Nets, who have gone 2-0-1 ATS in their L/3 games overall. Of course, Jersey only has one win SU since January 2nd and two wins SU since December 8th. One would say that this is a team that should be trading everyone at the deadline, but is there any other team in the league that really wants anyone on a team that is 4-46?
2: Washington Wizards (18-29-2 ATS): For whatever reason, the Wizards seem to have Orlando’s number. They’ve taken two SU victories as dogs against the Magic this year, including Friday’s buzzer-beating win at Amway Arena. Of course, aside from that, Washington is only 1-6 ATS since January 20th.
3: Boston Celtics (19-29-1 ATS): The Celtics are really killing their NBA wagering fans right now. They’re just 9-12 SU and 5-15-1 ATS in their L/21 games, and if they’re not careful, the Raptors may run them down in the Atlantic Division. Getting outscored 36-11 in the third quarter of the Orlando game on Sunday wasn’t exactly something to be proud of either.

The Good
The role players for the Los Angeles Lakers: In order to win a championship, it takes the effort of a lot more than just a superstar. On Saturday night, G Kobe Bryant missed the Lakers’ game against Portland. C Andrew Bynum was banged up just a few minutes into the game. But without those two, LA didn’t just survive; it dominated. Everyone played their role. G Ron Artest scored 21 points, F Lamar Odom pulled down 22 rebounds, a G Shannon Brown scored 19 off of the bench. The end result was a 99-82 road win, which may have been one of the more significant victories of the season.
The Bad
F Tayshaun Prince, Detroit Pistons: Remember when Prince was considered one of the best role players in the NBA? He always did a little bit of everything and managed to put up solid numbers. But this week, he only scored four points in 25 minutes against New Jersey and shot 2/12 from the floor in a 107-83 loss to Indiana.
The Ugly
Golden State Warriors: This eight-game losing streak has been particularly awful for the Warriors. In the L/6, they’ve allowed 114.8 points per game. Things may be getting uglier any day now, as there have been rumors of dealing G Monta Ellis are picking up. Ellis is scoring 26.2 points per game for Golden State, but it’s pretty clear that all he’s doing is stunting the growth of G Stephen Curry. Things are just ugly right now in Golden State and probably aren’t getting any better any time in the near future.

June 15th, 2009

Last week two major championships were decided making for the end of a great week in sports.  This gave me plenty to rant about and it wasn’t hard to find some quality topics.  I am going to rant about how LA celebrates a title, discuss the best game seven ever and tell you why Shaq will win another ring.

The Los Angeles Lakers won another title last night and they were led by a MVP in Kobe Bryant and the best coach on the planet in Phil Jackson.  So die hard Lakers fans hit the street and did what becomes natural, they rioted.  I don’t get this.  What possess a fan to think the best way to celebrate is to over turn cars, burn things, and finish up with a smash and grab looting spree.  This happens in other cities besides LA but I just see no reason for it and LA seems to lead the league in riots.  Show some class LA and celebrate like a normal city.

Over the weekend the Pittsburgh Penguins did the improbable and beat the Detroit Red Wings at home in game seven to win Lord Stanley’s cup.  I am going to argue that this was the best game seven in the history of hockey.  It was physical with great play by both teams.  Pittsburgh jumped out to a lead and Detroit chipped away at the lead and it all came down to a last second shot on an open net that was only saved by Fleury throwing his body across the ice in Bobby Orr fashion to block the last shot of the game. Even if you did not like you could appreciate this game as it will go down as one of the best ever.

Yesterday during the finals it was announced that talks between Phoneix and Cleveland for Shaq are not dead.  This is big news because the management in Cleveland knows they have to do something drastic to keep Lebron James in a Cleveland uniform and this might just do the trick.  The GM’s from both teams are good friends and they talk often and this deal will be done.  Not only will it be done but Shaq is in the best shape of his life and will win a ring is he goes to Cleveland.  Now if we can just get him off Twitter everyone would be happy.

NBA Finals Game Three
Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (Lakers lead 2-0)
Tuesday, 9:05 pm Eastern – ABC

Bookmaker Sportsbook Opening Line: Magic – 4 , Total 198.5

The Orlando Magic had a chance in the NBA Finals to make the Los Angeles Lakers sweat and it remains to be seen if they get another one. Courtney Lee missed a layup with less than a second remaining in Game 2 and the Magic ended up losing Game 2 in overtime. Now the series shifts to Orlando where the Magic face a must-win Game 3 on Tuesday.

SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Magic at Home.

The Lakers realize they could have lost on Sunday and Kobe Bryant has promised they will play better on Tuesday. “We’re about to kick it up,” he said. “You’d better believe it. We’re close. You see what I’m saying? This is the finals. We’re going to be ready to go.” The Lakers have been an up and down team during the playoffs but Pau Gasol believes that is over. “We’re playing tougher,” Gasol said. “We understand what it takes to go get the championship.”

The problem for Orlando is NBA history. Only three teams have won an NBA title after losing the first two games. “We’ve just got to go home and take care of business,” Magic center Dwight Howard said. “The Lakers did a good job of protecting their home, and now it’s our turn to do the same thing. We’ve been in some tough situations. We’ve just got to fight our way out.”

Orlando has a number of issues they must correct if they are to make this into a series. The first problem is turnovers. They had 20 turnovers in Game 2 and their point guards were awful. Rafer Alston and Jameer Nelson have played very poorly and Orlando head coach Stan Van Gundy had to go to Hedo Turkoglu to run the point for a while. “We were just trying to see if we could get somebody out there who would make shots off of the double teams and off the pick-and-rolls and things like that,” Van Gundy said. “I thought our guys fought hard, but we couldn’t make enough plays. And the 20 turnovers crushed us.”

Here are the NBA betting stats for Tuesday’s game. The Lakers are 22-8-2 ATS in their last 32 games as a road underdog. The Lakers are 2-5 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

The Magic are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 playoff games as a favorite.

Bookmaker.Com Current Line: Magic – 4 , Total 198

The Under is 10-1 in the Lakers last 11 vs. the Eastern Conference. The Under is 11-5 in the Lakers last 16 road games. The Under is 7-2 in Orlando’s last 9 playoff games as a favorite. The Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Orlando between the two teams.

Pick: Magic roll easily

Regaw Rants NBA Finals Edition

Tonight is game one in the NBA Finals and it just seemed fitting that the rants today be centered on the event. This match up looks decent on paper and it should make for some good basketball, but I am ready to rant. Is Phil the best? It has to be the shoes and bench Jameer are the topics for today’s rants!

Sit on it Jameer: After the Magic beat the Cleveland Cavaliers and advanced to the finals all of the talk in Orlando was that point guard Jameer Nelson might be able to play in the finals. After a few days it was announced that he would be able to play in the finals for the Magic. At first glance it would seem that this is a good thing for the Magic. He is an all-star guard and is one of the reasons that the Magic has had such a stellar season. When he played the Lakers in the regular season he was the high scorer in both of the Magic victories but my rant is simple here, sit this one out. It has been awhile without Nelson and chemistry can be tricky. When he comes back other guards will sit back and watch him work and if he does not come back into the flow easily it may cause some problems for the Magic offense. My suggestion is that if they do bring him back, let him come in off the bench and ease back into the system and in to the flow of the game. This is the finals and the Magic cannot afford to give him a game or two to get back into playing form, and even that may not be enough. If they let Nelson start the next Magic act you may see is the Magic disappearing.

The best NBA coach ever? If the Lakers win another championship it will be a record setting win for head coach Phil Jackson. He is currently tied with nine championships with Celtic legendary coach Red Auerbach. If they are able to defeat the Magic this year he would sit alone as the NBA coach with the most titles. Does this make him the best? He is a Hall of Fame coach there is no doubt about it, but the best? This may sound like a rant but I say YES! The most common argument is that he won with Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and some of the best players and teams in NBA history. So what? So did Red Auerbach. In fact Red Auerbach had arguably the best team(s) to ever play in the NBA and at the time the best player(s) with the likes

IS Phil the best of all time?

Is Phil the best of all time?

of Bill Russell and Larry Bird just to name a few. The coach still has to devise a game plan or in Jackson’s case invent one and handle the teams. As far as I am concerned just for handling Dennis Rodman Phil Jackson should be named the best. If your going to say Phil is not the best of all time just come up with a better argument than he coached good players and had great teams.

It’s got to be the shoes money! It was announced and evidently big news that Orlando Magic guard Mickael Pietrus will switch his sneakers for the finals. This is because he wears Nike hyper dunk sneakers and this brand is endorsed by Kobe Bryant who just so happens to play on the other team. Here is my rant on this. Good move and it’s pretty funny! This way when Pietrus checks him on the court he can talk smack about not wearing his shoe and it actually got his name in the headlines. If I was Kobe I would have an entire shipment delivered to his house just to show that he is a good sport! Listen up Nike executives if the Magic win, the least you could do is give Pietrus his own shoe!

NBA Finals Betting Preview
Orlando Magic at Los Angeles Lakers
Staples Center, Thursday 9:00PM Eastern

Betus.com betting line – Lakers -6, 206 O/U

The 2009 NBA Playoffs have not disappointed sports fans in any kind of way. This year’s post-season play has been highlighted by grueling series, game winning shots, upsets, and more. Basketball fans have witnesses some of the most exciting playoff games in years and we are now left with only two teams battling for an NBA Championship. The Orlando Magic were among the top teams in the Eastern Conference all season. However, after Jameer Nelson was lost from a shoulder injury the Magic quickly became an underdog in the shadow of Cleveland and Boston. However, the Magic are perhaps playing their best basketball of the season without one of the major scoring threats and are now poised to battle the sizeable favorites Los Angeles Lakers. Los Angeles cruised through the regular season nearly unchallenged in the Western Conference. The Lakers needed 7 games to overcome a hungry Rockets team in the Conference Semi-Finals and took down Denver in 6 games to win the West. Los Angeles now enters the 2009 NBA Finals favored to take home their first title since 2002.

Orlando entered the playoffs similar to the way they will enter the 2009 Finals as many people are not giving them much of a chance. However, the Magic have overcome Boston and Cleveland during their post-season route and are primed to pull of another upset. The Magic as a team has really improved their shooting during the playoffs and it has resulted into a lot of success. Orlando has shot 47% as a team from the floor during their impressive run fueled by the emergence of Mickael Pietrus who has been tremendous from the perimeter. Pietrus and Rashard Lewis have kept defenses on their toes by knocking down the outside shots while Dwight Howard remains dominate on the inside. Howard has averaged a playoff best 15.4 rebounds per game while being able to post 21.7 points per game as well. Howard will play a big role in the series in the fact that Orlando must be able to control the glass. Orlando will need to construct some type of advantage in the paint to slow down the high scoring Lakers offense. Orlando has looked very strong over the last few weeks and they will hope to continue firing on all cylinders which could lead them towards bringing home their first NBA Title in franchise history.

The Los Angeles Lakers enter the Finals fresh off handling a hot Denver Nuggets team in 6 games. Denver was a team that had really progressed throughout the season, but the Lakers were simply too much to handle. Los Angeles has a variety of players that can contribute to high scoring performances. However, the ring leader in that high scoring offense is superstar Kobe Bryant. Bryant who already owns 3 NBA Titles will be in search for his 4th Championship this Thursday in the first game inside the Staples Center. Bryant has posted just slightly under 30 points per during the 2009 playoffs and his performances over the new few games could decide the fate for the Lakers. Accompanying Bryant in the difficult task will be Pau Gasol, the Lakers big man. Gasol has averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds thus far during the post-season. However, Gasol defense may be just as critical as his offense over the next few games as he will try to thwart Dwight Howard in the paint. Outside of these two stars, the Lakers have a variety of weapons from Derek Fisher to a solid bench that will have their moments over the series. Los Angeles is a big favorite in the series, but many fail to remember that the Lakers are 0-2 against Orlando this year which included a loss already inside the Staples Center. However, the Lakers will look to take advantage of being at home this Thursday and good start to the series.

Pick – Over 206

NBA Playoff Preview
Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (Lakers lead 3-2)
Friday, 9:05 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Nuggets  -  5 ,  Total  208

The Los Angeles Lakers will try and close out the Denver Nuggets in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals on Friday.  The Nuggets have outplayed the Lakers for the most part in this series but at critical times they have made mistakes and they trail three games to two. “For most of the series, we outplayed them for most stretches of the game,” Denver’s Chauncey Billups said. “We just couldn’t get over the hump in the fourth quarter in a few different situations.”

SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Lakers on the Road.

The Nuggets have not played with much discipline in this series and it has cost them but head coach George Karl is not going to do anything different on Friday. “You guys are almost saying you’ve got to have savvy and poise to be a championship team,” Karl told reporters, “I mean, you think the Detroit Pistons have the poise that the San Antonio Spurs have? No, I mean there’s a different way of handling emotional, passionate, intense players. We have some guys who are emotional. Maybe a little too emotional. But for me, I’m not going to tell them to stop that because I think that stops them from becoming a competitor.”

The Lakers have been so unpredictable in the playoffs that anything is possible in Game 6.  If Los Angeles brings their best game they could end this series but rarely have the Lakers played great in back-to-back games.

“That’s what the conversation has been about this entire postseason, our team, our potential and our capabilities,” Derek Fisher said.

Here are the NBA betting stats for Friday’s game. The Lakers are 21-8-2 ATS in their last 31 games as a road underdog. The Lakers are 12-5 ATS in the last 17 meetings between the two teams.

The Nuggets are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite. The Nuggets are 21-6 ATS in their last 27 games overall.

SBG Global Current Line: Nuggets  -  5.5 ,  Total  208.5

The Under is 9-1 in the Lakers last 10 Conference Finals games. The Under is 11-4 in the Lakers last 15 road games.

The Over is 11-5 in the Nuggets last 16 games as a home favorite. The Under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in Denver between the two teams.

Pick: Nuggets

NBA Betting Preview
Los Angeles Lakers (38-9) at Boston Celtics (41-9)
Thursday, 8:00PM Eastern

Bookmaker.com betting line -

The Boston Celtics will host the Los Angeles Lakers inside TD Northbank Garden on Thursday night highlighting an epic battle between possibly the best two teams in the league. The Celtics own the best record in the NBA at a strong mark of 41-9 and they will be in search of their 13th straight win when they host the Lakers on Thursday night. Los Angeles on the other hand has the 2nd best record in the NBA at 38-9 while having a big advantage over the Western Conference. The game represents a re-match of last year’s NBA Finals and could possibly represent this year’s Finals as well. The Lakers beat the Celtics 92-83 on Christmas Day earlier this season and they will be looking for another big victory over the defending champions.

Boston is coming off a clutch win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night. Celtics guard Ray Allen knocked down a 3 ball with .05 seconds to go in the game to give Boston the 100-99 victory and 12th straight victory. The Celtics got the win without one of their key playmakers Kevin Garnett. Garnett has been battling a sickness, but will likely get to play when the Celtics take the court on Thursday. Paul Pierce is leading the team in scoring this season with 19 points per game and is averaging 33 points in his last two outings. Outside of Cleveland’s ludicrous 23-0 home record, the Celtics sport the 2nd best home record of 24-2 in the NBA. Boston will be looking to extend their winning streak and superb home record while seeking a little revenge when they host the Lakers on Thursday.

Los Angeles rolls into the game with the best scoring offense in the league averaging a strong 108 points per game. Kobe Bryant ranks 3rd in the NBA in scoring averaging 27 points per game. Bryant is coming off his biggest night of the season breaking a Madison Square Garden record when he dropped an amazing 61 points against the New York Knicks. Pau Gasol also had a big night with Kobe’s big performance aiding the cause with 31 points. Among all the scoring highlights, center Andrew Bynum went down with a tore MCL and will miss around 3 months of play. The Lakers will look to compensate for the loss of the starting center while attempting to take down the Celtics for the 2nd time this season on Thursday.

What to watch for…
In the last meeting, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant combined for over half of the Lakers 93 points in their win over the Celtics. These two players will have to play big again with the loss of Bynum and their success will likely determine the Lakers’ success. Also, in the last meeting the Celtics turned the ball over nearly 20 times that aided the losing cause. Expect fewer turnovers and possibly a higher scoring game this time around.

Pick – Celtics get payback and move to 13 straight wins

NBA Betting Preview
Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs
Wednesday, 9:05 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Spurs  -  2.5  ,  Total  199

Two of the top teams in the Western Conference meet on Wednesday as the San Antonio Spurs host the Los Angeles Lakers in a nationally televised game on ESPN. Last year the teams split their season series 2-2.  The Spurs have won six of the last ten meetings in San Antonio between the two teams.

The Spurs are definitely looking forward to the game on Wednesday to gauge where they are at.  “I’m looking forward to it.” San Antonio’s Bruce Bowen said, “I think they are the standard of the West.”
SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Lakers on the Road.

The Lakers had to play in Houston last night but they have excelled this season in the second half of back-to-backs.  They are 7-1 in that situation so far this season.   Last year the Lakers were 12-5 in the second game of back-to-backs.  The Lakers are currently 1st in the NBA in points scored.  Since moving to L.A. the Lakers have led the NBA in scoring four times. Kobe Bryant is averaging 24.8 points per game in his career against the Spurs.

Here are the NBA betting stats for Wednesday’s game. The Lakers are 15-5-2 ATS in their last 22 games as a road underdog. The Lakers are 15-7 ATS in their last 22 games playing on no rest. The Lakers are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 vs. the Western Conference. The Lakers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games.

The Spurs are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 vs. the Pacific. The Spurs are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games. The Spurs are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 Wednesday games. The home team is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings between the two teams.

SBG Global Current Line: Spurs  -  3.5  ,  Total  199

The Under is 4-1 in the Lakers last 5 road games. The Over is 5-0 in the Spurs last 5 home games. The Under is 12-2 in the Spurs last 14 vs. the Pacific. The Over is 5-2 in the Spurs last 7 overall. The Under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between the two teams and the Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings in San Antonio.

NBA Betting Preview
New Jersey Nets (6-6) at Los Angeles Lakers (11-1)
Tuesday, 10:35 pm Eastern

SBG Global Opening Line: Lakers   - 13.5 , Total 209

The Los Angeles Lakers have the best record in the NBA at 11-1 but they were not happy with their latest effort, a 118-108 win over Sacramento on Sunday. They committed 18 turnovers and allowed the Kings to shoot 53.4 percent from the field. “I thought we were poor, defensively,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. He was not alone in that assessment as Kobe Bryant shared that sentiment. “I’m not happy with this win. We could have played much more solid defensively,” Kobe said, “They did a good job getting out in transition. So from that aspect, we might have been a little worn down.”

SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Lakers at Home.

The Lakers defense will be tested on Tuesday by a New Jersey offense that is averaging 111.4 points per game in their last five outings.  That could mean a lot of points on Tuesday night considering the Lakers are averaging 110.8 points per game in their last four games.  Kobe sure likes playing at home against New Jersey as he has averaged 32 points per game the last three times.

The Nets have been led in scoring this season by Vince Carter but he is also getting support from Yi Jianlian who scored a season-high 27 points in the Nets last game against the Clippers.

The Lakers have had trouble at home against New Jersey of late, losing four of the last six.  Here are more NBA betting stats for Tuesday’s game. The Nets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Nets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Nets are 7-20-1 ATS in their last 28 vs. the Western Conference. The Nets are 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 Tuesday games.

The Nets are 4-1-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Los Angeles. The underdog is 7-2-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings and the road team is 8-1-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

The Lakers are 13-6 ATS in their last 19 Tuesday games. The Lakers are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 vs. the Atlantic. The Lakers are 0-11 ATS in their last 11 vs. the Eastern Conference.

SBG Global Current Line: Lakers   - 13.5 , Total 209

The Under is 4-1 in the Nets last 5 vs. the Pacific. The Over is 4-1 in the Nets last 5 overall. The Over is 5-2 in the Nets last 7 road games. The Under is 7-3 in the Nets last 10 Tuesday games. The Over is 4-0 in the Lakers last 4 vs. the Eastern Conference. The Over is 5-1 in the Lakers last 6 home games. The Over is 13-6 in the Lakers last 19 vs. the Atlantic. The Over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Los Angeles between the two teams.

Pick: Lakers 2 out of 5 units

NBA Betting Preview
Los Angeles Lakers at Los Angeles Clippers
Wednesday, 10:35 pm Eastern – ESPN

SBG Global Opening Line: Lakers  - 8.5 ,  Total  202

The Los Angeles Lakers face their first back-to-back situation of the season as they play the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night.  The Lakers opened up the season last night at home against Portland. It is not that tough a situation though since the Lakers don’t have to travel. Last season the Lakers swept their season series with the Clippers 4-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The two teams have met 177 times overall and 111 times since the Clippers moved to Los Angeles. The Lakers are 7-3 in their last 10 games against the Clippers. The Lakers are 6-4 in their last 10 games, as a visitor at the Staples Center. Under head coach Phil Jackson, the Lakers are 25-7 versus the Clippers. In 46 career games versus the Clippers, Kobe Bryant is averaging 25.1 points per game. SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Lakers on the Road.

The Clippers open up the new season a far different team than they were a year ago.  Gone are Elton Brand and Corey Maggette.  Into the mix are Baron Davis and Marcus Camby.  Many people are not giving the Clippers much chance this season but Davis should be able to keep them competitive on most nights.

Here are the NBA betting stats for Wednesday’s game.  The Lakers are 18-5 ATS in their last 23 vs. the Pacific. The Lakers are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games playing on no rest. The Lakers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.

The Lakers are 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between the two teams and the favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

SBG Global Current Line: Lakers  - 9 ,  Total  202
